| | |Section 3.0 General information |

3.0.1 Introduction

Packaging reduction in the chemical industry resulted to development of IBC for liquids and solids.

The concerned IBC include volumes from 450 to 3000 Litres.

Specifications for IBC produced from corrugated cardboard packaging/octagonal box are not listed in this chapter, because these are dependent e.g. on the particular application and on the basic dimensions of the used pallet. Information for corrugated cardboard

packaging is contained in chapter 6.

For materials and the manufacturing of packaging the EU- and national directives and

regulations are applied.

It is recommended the IBC listed of this chapter used largely for the following reasons:

Standardization

By use of standard containers low-cost and environment-relevant packaging solutions can be achieved.

Possibility of multiple used

For standardized IBC the possibility to recondition and thus to reuse is existing.

Conditions relevant to environment

Also legal interests have to be taken into consideration with the use of packaging

(packaging ordinance, dangerous goods transport).

3.0.4 Recovery systems

Depending on type of IBC there are different ways / organisations of recycling:

| |

|VDF - Verband der Deutschen Fassverwertungsbetriebe e.V. |

|RIGK - Gesellschaft zur Rückführung industrieller und gewerblicher Kunststoffverpackungen mbH |

The manufacturers of IBC offer services in Europe for reconditioning and further use.

More information can be taken from Chapter 10 (recovery systems).
