ICD-10 Codes

ICD-10 is the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health

Problems, a medical classification list by the World Health Organization. It contains codes for diseases,

sign and symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances, and external causes of injury

or diseases. For more information regarding WHO and their coding standards visit their website:

who.int

ICD-10-CA is an enhanced version of ICD-10 that has been developed by the Canadian Institute of Health

Information (CIHI) for the classification of morbidity in Canada. Your EMR uses the ICD-10-CA coding

standards. For more information regarding CIHI and their coding standards visit their website:

cihi.ca or ICD-10-CA Tabular list.

Using ICD-10-CA codes in the EMR

Coding a Contact Problem

Your EMR provides you with the ability to use ICD-10-CA coding standards when entering patient

contacts or problems. Consistently coding patient contacts will allow you to optimize EMR use through

features such as Find Object queries and Dynamic Groups. You will also be able to sort patient

encounters by diagnosis with a simple click.

1. When in the New Encounter, click on Problem to open the Contact Properties window.

2. In the Diagnosis field, begin typing the patient problem. Allow a few seconds for the system to

return matches. Double click the matching problem in the list if more than one is found.

a. NOTE: The list of codes searched in the Contact Properties Diagnosis field is like a favourites

list, once a code is used once, it will be available from this field. This is not a complete search

of all ICD-10-CA codes.

3. If you do not receive a match in the Diagnosis field search, click the Elliptical tool to open the

Select disease code window in order to search the entire ICD-10-CA list.

4. Enter the diagnosis criteria into the Look for field and click Search. Select the diagnosis code from

the list and click OK to populate the Diagnosis field in the Contact Properties window. NOTE: When

searching with the ICD-10 alphanumerical code, be sure to is capital letter, example R51 not r51.

You can also use % for wild card searches, enter R70% to find all codes within this range.

5. Select the Add to Problem List checkbox to add the problem to the patient¡¯s Problem List, click OK.
