Letter from the President

Top O’ the morning!

One of my favorite things about March is the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Tales of mischievous leprechauns, toasted soda bread with butter and hearing the dulcet tones of the Irish brogue; whether you sport green attire in celebration of your Irish heritage or just to avoid being pinched, March 17th has always had a special place in my heart.

In addition to St. Patrick’s Day, the month of March has roared to life for the St. Louis West Local Chapter. Registration for our local ICD-10 boot camps is open as of March 1st. On March 29th, we will be holding an AAPC certification exam at St. Luke’s, please arrive by 6:30 am for a 7 am start.

The March and April service project will be collecting donations for the Five Acres No-Kill Pet Shelter in St. Charles Missouri. The shelter is sponsored by David Backes , Captain of the St. Louis Blues who also brought home several stray dogs from Sochi after the Olympics. The shelter is looking for food, treats, toys and other items for dogs and cats. The full wish list is available in this month’s newsletter. Please bring one of these items to our next meeting and receive a point for education!

Thanks everyone!

Stacy Blodgett,CPC

2014 Presiddent

From the AAPCCA Chapter Association

March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb…well, we all hope so anyway! Some of you are seeing crocus and daffodils pop up as the rest of the country is buried in snow and ice. If you are the crocus watchers, I am SO jealous! But spring will come to all of us soon and when it does, new opportunities will present themselves.

This is a GREAT time to get involved in your chapter. You need experience and they need talent! You’ve got it even if you don’t realize it. Take the time now to make a presentation on what you know best! If you don’t feel confident enough to present it by yourself, find someone you work with to help you develop it. Coders, speak on your specialty; billers, talk about how you best handle your accounts receivable; managers talk about how you best track your practice’s success. If you don’t want to speak, then develop a game for everyone to play at a meeting. Everyone has something to share and you don’t have to be a professional speaker, you just have to develop your own passion and most importantly, SHARE it.

March is a beginning for us all. Take time to share what you have with others and make your chapter the best it can be!

February Member Challenge

February was Eating Disorders Awareness Month.

Here is the website where you can double check your answers about the types of Eating Disorders.

Types & Symptoms of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders -- such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder – include extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues. Eating disorders are serious emotional and physical problems that can have life-threatening consequences for females and males.

The following information is a brief summary of the Feeding and Eating Disorders described in the American Psychiatric Association’s Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), published in 2013. Click on the links below to learn more about the different types of eating disorders and their symptoms.

Anorexia Nervosa

• Inadequate food intake leading to a weight that is clearly too low.

• Intense fear of weight gain, obsession with weight and persistent behavior to prevent weight gain.

• Self-esteem overly related to body image.

• Inability to appreciate the severity of the situation.

• Binge-Eating/Purging Type involves binge eating and/or purging behaviors during the last three months.

• Restricting Type does not involve binge eating or purging.

Binge Eating Disorder

• Frequent episodes of consuming very large amount of food but without behaviors to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting.

• A feeling of being out of control during the binge eating episodes.

• Feelings of strong shame or guilt regarding the binge eating.

• Indications that the binge eating is out of control, such as eating when not hungry, eating to the point of discomfort, or eating alone because of shame about the behavior.

Bulimia Nervosa

• Frequent episodes of consuming very large amount of food followed by behaviors to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting.

• A feeling of being out of control during the binge-eating episodes.

• Self-esteem overly related to body image.

Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder

(Described as Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) DSM-IV)

• A feeding or eating disorder that causes significant distress or impairment, but does not meet the criteria for another feeding or eating disorder.

• Examples include:

• Atypical anorexia nervosa (weight is not below normal)

• Bulimia nervosa (with less frequent behaviors)

• Binge-eating disorder (with less frequent occurrences)

• Purging disorder (purging without binge eating)

• Night eating syndrome (excessive nighttime food consumption)

Additional Eating and Feeding Disorders

• Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder

• Pica

• Rumination Disorder

• Unspecified Feeding or Eating Disorder
