..many side effects of Diabetes..
Your diabetes control is being measured by a special lab test called Hemoglobin A1C. This lab test gives information on how your blood sugar has been, on average, in the past three months. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that Hemoglobin A1C levels be below 7% to help prevent or delay problems that are associated with diabetes.
We have reviewed A1C reports in our patients with diabetes. Your result has identified you to be at risk for future problems that may be related to diabetes such as stroke, heart attack and eye disease. We ask that you consider efforts to reduce your current Hemoglobin A1C value. These efforts include:
1. At the next visit with your doctor, discuss current medications being used and potentially consider the start of insulin.
2. Continue to test blood sugars and bring your records to your next appointment. These should include a sampling of both fasting and non-fasting values.
3. Please also consider enrollment in the UPMC Health Enhancement Program to address lifestyle issues like diet, weight loss and exercise.
Staying healthy with diabetes also means having the following tests done every year:
1. Microalbumin-a urine test for protein to make sure your kidneys are healthy. Your doctor should check this for you.
2. Lipids-tests for cholesterol levels
3. Annual Eye Exam-, Over 20,000 people a year is blinded by diabetes .Make sure you are getting a complete eye exam. This means having your eyes dilated.
4. Foot Exams-make sure that you take off your shoes when you see your doctor so that your feet can be checked almost 100,000 people suffer from lower limb extremity amputations each year..
5. Neurology consultation. The statistics show it is a leading cause of nervous system damage to almost 60-70% of people with diabetes. One out of 5 patient with diabetes have amputations.
6. Cardiology consultation. People with diabetes have a chance of having a stroke or heart disease 2-4 times higher than someone without it Over 60% of diabetics die each year from heart disease and stroke.
7. The ABI/TBI test is used to document the presence or absence of peripheral artery disease, and can be performed every year to assess whether PAD is getting worse. Blood pressure measurements are taken at the arms and legs called a Doppler.
Your health is important to you and to us.
Sincerely,
Michigan Physicians Group
