Metaphor Ice Breaker Activity

Metaphor Ice Breaker Activity

Metaphors are symbolic abstractions about certain ideas and concepts. Metaphors can also help to conceptualize characteristics about how we see ourselves and how others see us in different situation. This activity serves as an icebreaker but also allows individuals to reflect, discuss, and share information in a casual and friendly way.

Step 1: Silent Hello: Ask participants to stand and move around the room saying hello to as many people as they can without using any words.

Step 2: After a minute or so, ask participants to stop where they are and point out the four charts that appear in the different areas of the room.

Step 3: Explain that the top item on each chart is an environment. Ask them to move to the one that they feel best describes them when they are alone. Once they get to their chart, ask them to pair up with at least one other person, but they can get with more if they feel comfortable enough to do so. Give them a few minutes to share their information and then ask for some volunteers to share their responses.

Step 4: Once you get their attention again, point out that the middle row of each chart represents and animal. Have them move to the chart that best represents how they see themselves when they are around people that they don’t know. After they move to the chart, direct them to share in pairs or in small groups. After a minute or two, ask for volunteers to share what they discovered.

Step 5: Once you have their attention, point to the bottom word on each chart. These represent instruments. Ask them to move to the chart that they feel best represents them when they are at work.

Step 6: Once they get to the chart they can share again. Then they can volunteer to share with the group what they chose.

Step 7: Once they complete this have them go back to their seats and write a statement that described what the learned about themselves.
