The Micromath book and CD

The DfES paid for the production and distribution of the ATM book Integrating ICT into the mathematics classroom and accompanying CD to 3500 maintained secondary schools in England last Autumn. The book celebrates 21 years of the Micromath journal with a collection of reprints of 30 articles. There is one page (p 9) which describes what is on the CD. My first piece of advice to any school or LEA is to make a copy of this page, and the CD, for every maths teacher! This book, edited by Julie-Ann Edwards & David Wright, is published by ATM at £14 (members) or £20 (others) – ref REA025, ISBN: 1898611408, .uk/buyonline/products/books/rea025.html .

The CD contains the pdf file for an 82-page book called `ICT and Mathematics – A Guide to Teaching and Learning Mathematics 11-19 using ICT’, edited by Adrian Oldknow, recently been published in book form by the MA at £6 for members and £9 for others: ISBN 090658860X,

m-.uk/resources/publications/books/index.htm#ICT-guide .

There are also trial versions of powerful software: TI InterActive!, TI-SmartView and TI Connect, Autograph, the Geometer’s Sketchpad and Cabri II Plus. The `Maths Gallery’ contains 125 digital photographs, each in small, medium and high resolution. Produce by Richard Phillips they are designed to be easily copied and pasted into dynamic geometry software such as Cabri II Plus, the Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP) or Geogebra to support algebraic and/or geometric modelling activities. See .uk for the techniques. I gave an example of just such use in a recent article for the SSAT:

Free stuff from Intel and Smartboard

The winner of the BETT award for KS3/4 mathematics software is the Mathematical Toolkit and Number Line from Intel. This can be downloaded free, with support materials, from the London Grid for Learning at . You can view an online video of its use in Bay House School, Gosport, Hants, at .uk/corporate/display.cfm?section=21&id=4982.

We are currently working with Steljes, the UK distributors of SMARTBoards, on free materials to support mathematics teachers. These materials are embedded in their SMART Notebook. The first batch of these materials is scheduled for distribution to schools and LEAs in early March. A new release 9.5 of the SMART Notebook software is also scheduled for about then – and this contains all the elements of the Intel Mathematical Toolkit and Number Line within the gallery of free mathematics tools provided.

Watching teachers in action: video case studies and Teachers’ TV

Video case studies of ICT in mathematics at KS3/4 produced by the DfES were distributed at the 2005 BETT show on a CD within the Embedding ICT @ Secondary Key Stage 3 Mathematics pack: DfES/0806/2004.

Order online via or by phone from Prolog on 0845 60 222 60.

Teachers TV is on Sky and Free-to-air, but there is also an extensive video library kept online: /searchArchive.do?submitted=true. Select ‘Secondary, Mathematics, All’ and find the reference to `KS3/4 Maths - New Maths Technology - In the Classroom’. The program tracks the events in one school on one day as different teachers experiment with using different ICT tools in their classrooms. These include graphical calculators (and the TI-SmartView emulator on an IWB), dynamic geometry software (GSP) and the Intel Number Line tool. An accompanying programme discusses some of the management issues. Teachers TV also carries resource reviews, which include the SMART Notebook. More programmes on KS3/4 mathematics are scheduled soon, some of which refer to ICT use.

The Practical Support Pack – Learning and teaching using ICT

New! Free lesson plans, resources, tutorials and video case studies – mainly KS3 – at: .uk/supportpack/subject.aspx?t=2&s=10 .

This was previously called `ESTUICT(CPD)’ and the materials were developed by the Mathematics Consortium (the Mathematical Association, University of Chichester and New Media plc.)

Cabri 3D

The CountOn website is the continuation site from Maths Year 2000. I am currently producing a set of free resources with a monthly (12 part) tutorial (like the old Cordon Bleu Cookery Course!) on the use of Cabri 3D. There is a link from which you can download the free evaluation version of the software, (which also qualifies for e-learning credits): cabri/index.htm .

Teaching Mathematics using ICT, 2nd edition

Written by Adrian Oldknow and Ron Taylor, published by Continuum 0-8264-7059-9 this book is available from Amazon at £19.99 with a resource CD: .

Interactive Companion To Advanced Mathematics

Written by Adrian Oldknow, Jean Flower and Linda Tetlow this CD contains a wide range of easy-to-use programs and pre-written files for the Geometer's Sketchpad, Cabri Geometry II Plus, Microsoft Excel, TI InterActive! and graphical calculators – as well as powerful self contained graphing software called `Tool for Interactive Mathematics (TIM)’. It is ideal for whole class teaching, individual or home-based learning. The resources support all schemes of work for AS Mathematics, including Edexcel, OCR, AQA, WJEC and CCEA. The student version is £15.26 (ISBN 1-405-80204-9 ) and a site licence (ISBN: 1-405-80205-7) is £293.75: and also from: .
