Traditional Horseback Hunts -- "The way hunting ought to be"

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Professionalism and pride in our business is the key to the success we have enjoyed since 1963. We strive to provide the best in high quality, personalized adventures for every client. Our past clients are happy to testify that we are successful in our efforts. We will be happy to provide you with a complete list of every hunter as far back as you wish.

Hunting at Middle Fork Lodge is family operated from a private ranch within the heart of the "River of No Return Wilderness". Living year round in the wilderness provides us with the unique opportunity of offering a variety of opportunities throughout the year.

We offer trips in a large portion of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River within the Challis and Boise National Forests. We are protected by law as the only outfitter licensed to operate within the 200 sq. miles of our boundaries.

The only means of access to this remote area is bush plane, or horseback. Boise is our closest commercial airport if you travel via commercial airlines. If you elect to drive to Idaho, our closest access points are Challis, Salmon or McCall. We will be happy to assist you with the flight arrangements with competent, experienced air charter services.

ELK - DEER - BEAR COMBINATION HUNTS

T he Middle Fork country is famous for its abundance of game and ability to provide the most remote hunting experiences in the continental U.S. This is wild country with a good balance of mature animals. It is one of the few places remaining where you can enjoy traditional hunting at its best; where the quality of your success is measured by the experience enjoyed, not only by the trophy collected.

Our combination elk, deer and bear hunts are conducted from mid-September through mid-November. These are eight-day hunts concentrating primarily on elk and deer, but including bear at no extra cost - of course, priorities are your choice. The first and last day of the trip may be used to ride to and from the spike camp. These camps are a three to six hour horseback ride from the ranch. We alternate the use of several camps in order to take advantage of the various weather conditions and to avoid over-hunting an area.

We segregate our groups by camp in order to provide "personalized" hunts for each group. In order to continue the quality experience that has built our reputation, we take only six hunters per week within our entire area of over 200 square miles. We offer trips of one hunter per guide, or two hunters per guide-- although we do not mix two strangers on a two hunters per guide hunt.

? TRADITIONAL HUNTS ? elk hunts ? mule deer hunts ?

The harvest success of each hunt depends on weather conditions and the ability and desire of each individual. The steep, rugged terrain can demand a great deal from the trophy-minded hunter. This country consistently produces game throughout the season. The early part of the season, mid-September through mid-October is during the "bugle" - an unforgettable sound that has been the pitfall of many large bulls. The excitement of hunting bugling bulls is an excellent test of your cardiovascular system.

The late hunts are excellent combination elk and deer hunts due to the advantage the first snows provide. The game moves to more open ranges creating opportunities to glass and evaluate the animals prior to the stalk. Our mule deer hunting is greatly improved due to the approaching rutting season.

Our horses are corralled and fed in order to eliminate the time that is lost wrangling and allows us to be out on the mountain at first light. We use horses to eliminate as much footwork as possible, although most of the actual hunting is done on foot.

All of these hunts include everything except your rifle, license, sleeping bag, personal items and flight into the ranch. We cannot stress too strongly the advantage of wearing non-scratchy materials, preferably fleece or wool. The scratch of nylon lessens your chance of success a great deal.

Please consult our price sheet for current prices.

BEAR HUNTS

W e conduct both Spring and Fall Bear Hunts. Our Spring hunts are conducted April through June and our fall hunts are conducted August 30 to September 15. These seven day hunts are the most pleasant, relaxing hunts we have to offer. We have enjoyed a success ratio of 90% over the years. The Middle Fork country has an abundance of bear with a natural balance of mature males. During these periods, the bear are concentrated at the lower elevations grazing on the first green plants of spring and the abundant berry crops in the fall. This provides us with the advantage of glassing from vantage points, evaluating the bear and planning a hopefully successful stalk. This is a very challenging and successful method of hunting bear.

These bears are of the black bear species although they may vary a great deal in shades and colors. Their prime spring coat is unequalled by any other season. Ninetypercent of all bear taken are large males beautiful trophies that you will be proud to display. We take good care of your trophies to see that they arrive at the taxidermist in the best of condition.

MOUNTAIN LION HUNTS

Alion hunt in the Idaho back country is one of the premiere hunting experiences available anywhere. These are classic hunts with horses, hounds and a lot of "yahoos". The old adage "back in

the good old days" doesn't apply to our lion hunting. The lion popula-

tion is at an all-time high with a very liberal season length and bag limit.

Hunting from the comforts of the fabulous Middle Fork Lodge and riding

the remote trails, enjoying the grandeur of the Middle Fork wrapped in

its winter plumage in pursuit of one of natures most majestic creatures, is

definitely as good as it gets.

You will enjoy the evenings in the luxury of a private room, hot tub

and swimming pool heated by our natural hot springs. The mornings will

begin with a hearty breakfast, then you will be handed a sack lunch and

mounted on a dependable mountain horse. Modern conveniences are left

behind as you head into the wilderness of yesteryear with experienced lion

hunters and a pack of excited hounds that live for this moment.

Lion tracks are found virtually everyday. We will evaluate each set

of tracks for size and freshness to

determine if they are worth the time

and effort. If they pass muster, you

will immediately be amused by the

clamor of hounds and their "full

cry". We will pursue the hound

music by horseback and on foot

until you are staring into fiery eyes

and snarling teeth. You will then

make the judgment if this is the cat

for you, if not, a roll of film later and

we are off to start another chase. A

good camera is an absolute must, as

this hunt is a photographer's dream.

We offer special prices for camera

hunts where your only desire is to

capture these magnificent animals

on film. Spouses and non-hunters

are welcome on these hunts - history has proven all to have a great time.

BIGHORN SHEEP or ROCKY MTN. GOAT

W e have been providing the expertise necessary to hunt Sheep and Goat since 1963. The characteristics of these animals combined with the topography of their habitat provide the optimum challenge to those hardy souls interested in their pursuit. Due to our experience and indepth knowledge of the area, we have enjoyed a success very near 100 percent. These are "bragging rights" that do not come easily. We spend many days scouting and preparing for your hunt long before your arrival.

We utilize horses and mules to access the sheep and goat country, and then continue our hunts from roving camps with backpacks. Our day is spent glassing the slopes and moving until a trophy class Ram or Billy is spotted. This is a 10-day hunt including everything except your sleeping bag and personal items.

All sheep and goat permits in Idaho are on a lottery basis. Applications must be sent to the Idaho Fish and Game Department no later than April 30. All applicants are notified of the results by June 10. We are happy to assist you with the procedures and recommended units.

Ma & Pa

? MEET THE FARRS ?

Me and My Girl

Ma & Pa - Scott began his guiding career in 1963. He and Shelda became a team in 1968. They raised their children in the Wilderness, packing them to camp on mules in "panniers" until they could ride. They were home schooled through elementary, until they were captured in a live-trap and forced to attend a civilized school. The family is truly "at home" in the wilderness. Shelda has been the organizer, bookkeeper, packer and the best of camp cooks. Scott is the "bull-shooter".

Jerrod Farr

Jerrod was born in 1971. He was raised in wilderness and began hunting and fishing as soon as he could walk. His adulthood has changed him little, still living to hunt and fish which is a natural as he is guiding 8 months out of the year. He is a true professional as hundreds of clients will attest. Along with his guiding, he is a building contractor. He has found a great partner in his wife Jen and they have two guides (John Scott & Jacen) and a camp cook (Jessi) coming up extremely fast. The future for maintaining quality guides and cooks at the Middle Fork Lodge is promising.

Justin Farr

Justin was born in 1970. He too, is experienced beyond his years and spent his entire life hunting, fishing and guiding. He as well as Jerrod have been guiding since the legal age of 18. I could be accused of being a bit biased, but these two guides are as good as they come. Justin and his wife Trish have a beautiful girl Livy and a boy Ty. At four years old there is little doubt where Ty's interest lies. Justin and Trish manage a fishing resort in British Columbia during spring and summer; Justin returns to guide for the Middle Fork Lodge in the fall
