Lesson 19: Infinitives
Verbals are verb forms that are used as another part of speech.
There are three types of verbals: participles, gerunds, and infinitives.
Monday: Infinitives as nouns
An infinitive is the form of a verb that comes after the word TO and acts as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. You should not split an infinitive!
Infinitives as nouns: As a noun, an infinitive can be used as a subject, direct object, predicate noun, object of a preposition, or appositive.
Identify the infinitive in the following sentences. On the line, write how the infinitive is being used.
1. To write was Alice’s ambition. ________________
2. Alice’s ambition was to write. ________________
3. Alice liked to write. ________________
4. Alice had no choice except to write. ________________
5. Alice’s goal, to write a novel, was reached last year. ________________
Tuesday: Infinitives as adjectives and adverbs
Infinitives as adjectives or adverbs: When used to describe, infinitives answer the same questions as adjectives (What kind? Which one? How many? How much?) and adverbs (How? When? Where? Why? To what extent?).
Identify the infinitive in the following sentences. Draw an arrow to what the infinitive describes.
1. David bought a car to drive on weekends.
2. The man to see today is Dr. Chou.
3. She is happy to go with us.
4. The place to visit is the Library of Congress.
Wednesday: Infinitive phrases
Infinitive phrases (like participles and gerunds) can be combined with other words to form phrases, all acting together as a single part of speech.
In your Writer’s Notebook, write a sentence using the infinitive phrase to fly an airplane
as a noun. After the sentence, tell how it was used: a subject, direct object, predicate noun, object of a preposition, or appositive.
