Advice

1 FLUENCY AND COHESION:

You need to improve your lexical range for this as well as practice more. This means you need more vocabulary which will make it easier for you to say what you want. Therefore you should be more exposed to natural language outside textbooks. You should read more in English, anything you enjoy reading, but in the end you will need to cover more topics so also things you enjoy less. You need to listen to more authentic English, this means watching more movies, series, TV programs, music, talk shows. Anything that is good for you and had lots of natural idiomatic language and collocations. Additionally you need more direct learning of vocabulary with textbooks: Vocabulary in Use (pre-intermediate/intermediate/upper-intermediate), Collocations in Use(intermediate), test your vocabulary in use (pre-intermediate/intermediate/upper-intermediate) Get these books and start practising and increasing your vocabulary. You also need more practice: so pick questions from Speaking Part 2 or Speaking Part 3 and practice answering the same questions multiple times. Answer the question, record your answer, listen to it and answer the question again and listen to the new recording and see if you have improved. Do this multiple times until you are happy then do a different questions.

2 LEXICAL RESOURCES:

You need to expand your lexical resources:

More reading about different topics as this helps you notice different words

Record words and collocations in a vocabulary booklet per topic and review on a regular basis

Have a look at Part 2 and Part 3 example answers online and see how they answer the question and what good vocabulary they use. Steal their good vocabulary and use it in your speaking

Take notes before you answer the questions, write down some good vocabulary you want to use before your speaking. Use to look up synonyms to expand your vocabulary

Use to look up so good collocations to go with your good vocabulary

Have a look at books Vocabulary in Use pre-intermediate/ intermediate and upper-intermediate to help with vocabulary per topic

Have a look at the book Collocations in Use intermediate for some good collocations per topic

Try to use all this new vocabulary when speaking. Pick 6 good words per topic, write them down and use all 6 in your speaking.

Record your speaking, listen to it and take some notes on the vocabulary, look for new and better words for the vocab you use and do the speaking again using the better words. Listen again and compare your speaking with the first one. Continue until you are happy with your speaking.

3 GRAMMATICAL RANGE AND ACCURACY:

Have a look at some grammar resources and practice some plural and single. You can have a look at:

You can also look at the books English Grammar in Use to work on grammar issues.

You can also look online through a search engine for other exercises on other websites

4 PRONUNCIATION:

If you do have some time work on some individual sounds, but focus the most on vocabulary and grammar. To help with pronunciation and understanding pronunciation have a look at and practice speech and sounds

OVERALL STEPS TO IMPROVE

You need to focus most on expanding your vocabulary which will improve your fluency and your lexical resources.

You need to do the same speaking question multiple times to improve your fluency

You need to take some notes before speaking to think about what you will say and to use the thesaurus and the collocation dictionary to upgrade your vocabulary

You need some more work on grammar to improve your accuracy by practising some more the grammar while writing and speaking.

Example answers

What types of local business are there in your neighbourhood?

In my neighbourhood, there are a bunch of different stores that cater to the apartment complexes surrounding them. There’s two supermarkets, a restaurant, a slightly more expensive restaurant, a cafe and two barbecue places right next to each other. There’s also a pet store that never seems to be open.

Do you think local businesses are important for a neighbourhood? in what way?

In my view, local businesses are the back bone of the neighbourhood. Not every time for everything you can go to the city or malls. They also make life a lot easier. When I forget to buy something I can always find it in my local corner shop. They also save me a lot of time, when I don't wanna take my car and drive somewhere I just go to my local restaurant.

How do large shopping malls and commercial centres affect small local businesses? Why do you think that is?

They have a huge negative impact on local business and many of them drive them out of business. You used to have the main street in every town which was filled with shops. Now many of them are closed because of the malls. The big stores can sell their products at more competitive prices as they buy in bulk and have smaller profit margins. People are also becoming lazier and prefer to go to one place where they can wander around and buy everything they need instead of taking the car and driving all over the place.

Why do some people decide to set up their own business?

Probably because they love the idea of being in control of their own destiny or maybe they really believe in a product or service they think the world needs. I'm sure some people find it very exciting, launching a new product and seeing your sales figures improving must be a wonderful feeling.

What are the risks of running your own business?

Of course, the biggest danger is that you’ll go bankrupt. I think much more than half of all new businesses go out of business in the first six months. If you invest too much in your business you might be personally liable, which could mean you would lose your house. Another one is the fear of failure. Many people don’t even take the chance to start a business because they’re worried about failing and being embarrassed.

What are the most important qualities a good business person needs?

I think there are probably a few different qualities that you need if you want to do business. It also depends on what kind business you are running. If you are working in a store dealing with people you need different skills than when you are the manager running the store. Still I would say you need to be able to negotiate well, so you can get the best deal for yourself. You probably also need to be patient and not give up, because not all ideas pay off from the beginning. So you will need to be able to invest some time before seeing a return. You probably also need to be good with numbers or have some idea of how accounting works so you don't go bankrupt.
