Counselors will work with each student to help determine his/her best plan for testing.Go online to for ACT and/or for SAT, to sign up for the tests. Watch registration deadlines and sign up early to get a seat at our SHS test site.If you have an IEP or 504 and want to apply to the testing companies for accommodations, refer to the letter that was mailed home in the Spring, which outlined the process of applying for accommodations.If you intend to apply to highly-selective colleges, check college websites to find out if you need to register for SAT II Subject Tests (). There is no special testing for the SAT at Solon High School. Students will receive information about the test and how to register through all English classes in September. The ASVAB is Friday, October 18, 2019. This U.S. Armed Forces use this test to determine competencies and initial eligibility for enlistment.Begin to research your post-secondary options (College, Career, Military, Gap Year).Use the “Website Resources” tab location on Page/2912 and your account on to do college, career, and military searches based on your interests/profile. Use the “Resources” section on the School Counseling website for college/career planning info.Use Naviance to find information on college or military representative visits to SHS and to register to attend presentations in the fall of your junior & senior years. Print your registration confirmation from Naviance and ask to have it signed by the teacher of the class period you will miss. Bring the signed registration page to attend the presentation.During Junior Jump-Start in December, and in your scheduling appointment early in the second semester, your counselor will discuss with you your college/career planning process and provide guidance/suggestions.Visit college or technical college campuses: Spring break of the junior year is a good time to visit colleges. Go on the college websites to register for tours and information sessions at the colleges.Talk with a military recruiter or sign-up for the ASVAB at Solon High School during junior year if you are considering a career in the military.Use/update your account on Naviance, our college/career counseling website, to keep track of resume information, do college/career searches, and receive emails about opportunities from our office. Remind your parents to set up their account on Naviance too, so they will receive email updates. Be sure to enter the colleges you are thinking about.Continue to strive for your academic best.College admissions use a holistic review which considers GPA, rigor of curriculum, ACT/SAT scores, contributions to the community, and extracurricular activities.Be sure to earn solid grades in the junior year and take a rigorous course load in the senior year. Colleges may request mid-year grades during senior year and will review your final transcript, which will include all final grades. Meet individually with your counselor in the spring to review your college planning.You will meet with your counselor during second semester to discuss course selections for senior year.Juniors will also be able to schedule a second appointment to specifically discuss college/career planning.After winter break submit to the Counseling Office the signed Transcript Release Form and electronically submit the Student/Parent Questionnaires via Naviance. Be sure to update your resumé in Naviance for your counselor to use for letters of recommendation. This info helps us help you!In the summer between 11th and 12th:Work on your college resumé and update it in Naviance! This is the last summer to showcase how you are making a difference in the community. Summer is a great time to do job shadowing, internships, volunteer work, camps, or start a part time job.The counselors will present Senior College Night during the second week of school for students and parents and meet with all seniors through English 12 classes in August for Senior App Start to set up Naviance for the senior year and provide information about the application process. Timeline for Juniors and their ParentsGo to and use your account on for college planning resources.FEBRUARY - MAYMaintain your grades and improve them if necessary. Your cumulative grade point average used in college admissions is determined at the end of your junior year. Distinguish yourself in some area: athletics, arts, leadership, community service, hobbies, etc. If you haven't gotten involved, it is not too late!Go online for preliminary information from different colleges. Get on their mailing/email lists.Use Naviance to gather information about careers and colleges. Select challenging academic courses for your senior year. The strength of your curriculum is a major factor in college admissions. Go online to schedule a college tour or contact admission offices to schedule an appointment to meet an admissions representative. Spring break is a great time to visit college campuses, military recruiters, or technical schools.Plan your college admission testing and register for test dates. Many students take the ACT and/or SAT twice in semester two of junior year to be prepared with test scores to begin the college application process senior year. To register: and . If appropriate, take SAT II subject tests at the end of the junior year.Think about which teacher you will ask to write a recommendation letter for you, if appropriate. Not all colleges require teacher recommendation letters.Turn in the Transcript Release Form by the beginning of January, to the School Counseling Secretary or your transcript will not be released to plete the items on the Junior Action Plan.JUNE - AUGUSTDO YOUR CAREER PLANNING HOMEWORK! Review different college websites and resources to compare information and start to narrow choices for applications. When you return to school for senior year, you should have selected at least three to seven colleges to which you will apply. The number of applications varies for each student based on bine your summer vacation with some college and/or technical school visits. Take a tour or schedule an appointment with an admissions representative or military recruiter. Be honest and open about grades, courses and test scores. Ask about your chances for admission. Bring an unofficial copy of your transcript and a copy of your resume.GOOD LUCK! Remember that the counselors understand that this is a big decision for everyone involved. We are here to assist both students and parents.Timeline for Seniors and their ParentsSEPTEMBER – DECEMBERAPPLY AND REQUEST TRANSCRIPTS: Go online to the college websites or Common App to complete applications. The School Counseling Office begins accepting transcript requests via Naviance in early September to send official transcripts, counselor forms and recommendation letters. We encourage students to submit all application materials by mid-November. Follow each application’s directions carefully and completely. It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of deadlines and to submit transcript requests to the School Counseling Office two weeks before due dates.SEND YOUR TEST SCORES TO THE COLLEGES: Retake the SAT or ACT in the fall if you are trying to raise your scores. Check requirements of the colleges on your list. Selective colleges may require or recommend SAT II Subject Tests. Have your scores sent to your colleges via the test company websites: and . RECOMMENDATION LETTERS: First, check your college websites to see if recommendations letters are required. Many schools do not require recommendation letters. Talk with teachers in person to request recommendation letters, then send the requests through Naviance if the teachers are available to write a letter for you. (Please do not ask more than two teachers for letters.) They may view your resume information online when writing the letter, so make sure you have your information updated on Naviance. Remember to thank teachers who have written recommendation letters for you. A hand-written note is especially appreciated. ESSAYS: Have your essays proofread and revised. Essays should demonstrate your very best efforts and should be error- and typo-free. Make an appointment with our essay advisors for assistance.COLLEGE VISITS: Attend college representative presentations at SHS. Over 120 colleges visit our high school each year. Register via Naviance and get the permission and signature from the teacher of the class period you will miss. Go for a visit to colleges that you may not have already seen. Interview and stay overnight in a dorm, if possible.GRADES: A strong first semester is vital. Some schools will withhold acceptance until completion of the first semester. FINANCIAL AID: To make an appointment with the representative from College Now Greater Cleveland for financial aid information, visit the School Counseling webpage. Evening appointments are available. Go online to view the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in September and begin to gather preliminary data. Register for an October or November FAFSA evening workshop at SHS. Complete and submit your FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1st.MILITARY ENLISTMENT: For those considering a career in the military, register to take the ASVAB in October at Solon High School and take your Summary Results to a Military Recruiter.JANUARY – MARCHExpect to be contacted for an alumni interview by some colleges.Apply for local scholarships in February/March.
