Course Title: Autism Self-contained

Course Description

Autism Program Goals

1. To provide training in adaptive, social, behavioral, and educational areas to students who require an extensive range of services and intensity of programming not feasible in a resource room or regular education class.

2. To facilitate a successful mainstreaming program in a less restrictive educational environment when appropriate.

Pre-Assessments:

Primary pre-assessment is IEP Goals and Objectives

A pre-test of a diagnostic nature is administered to each student to determine:

1. Skill deficiencies

2. Skill strengths

3. Reading levels

4. Math levels

5. Social/ Communication skill levels

6. Functional life skill levels

Performance Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

1. Navigate a high school campus with no or limited assistance

2. Participate in daily high school activities with no or limited assistance

3. Make progress on specified IEP goals/benchmarks

4. Demonstrate improved communication skills

5. Demonstrate improved social skills in various school and community settings

Program objectives:

1. Development of self-help skills.

2. Development of social skills.

3. Modification of behaviors that significantly impair the student’s ability to function in an independent manner.

4. Development of appropriate strategies to use in stressful and / or unfamiliar situations.

5. Development of receptive and/or expressive communication skills that are commensurate with the student’s measured abilities.

6. Development of fine-motor skills.

7. Development of gross-motor skills.

8. Development of perceptual-motor skills.

9. Development of readiness and academic skills-commensurate with the students measured abilities.

10. Development of pre-vocational and vocational skills. At the secondary level vocational skills are highly stressed.

11. Involvement of parents in their child’s education to foster a cooperative home/school program.

12. Coordination of the student’s program with the efforts of the community agencies and/or school personnel when appropriate.

Tests and quizzes will be administered throughout the course of study to determine the individual student’s development as well as the effectiveness for the teaching /learning system being employed.

Assignments:

The majority of assignments will be completed in class with appropriate homework activities which will usually require family participation.

Evaluation of Student Performance

Criteria for arriving at Student Grades

1. Semester Exam- The semester exam will constitute 10% of the semester grade.

2. Tests and Quizzes- Tests and quizzes will constitute 10% of the quarter grade.

3. Assignments-Assignments will constitute 40% of the quarter grade.

4. Participation/Contributions/Attendance- Participation and contribution, punctuality and regular attendance, initiative and dependability, cooperation and willingness to perform assigned tasks, accuracy and quality of work, and the ability to work with other students will constitute 40% of the quarter grade.

5. Make up assignments, tests and other educational tasks will provide the student 100% credit if made up within a three(3) day make-up period following excused absences.

Explanation of Student Grades:

A= 4 points = task completed correctly no assistance

B = 3 points = task completed mostly correct with prompting (verbal and/or physical)

C = 2 points = task incomplete, effort made with minimal prompts (verbal and / or physical)

D = 1 point = task incomplete with prompting (verbal and/ or physical)

F = 0 point = No effort made

Classroom rewards and incentives:

Daily points given for appropriate behavior and staying on task. Points are translated into paychecks which can be cashed for Miramontes Money or saved in the class bank. Money can then be used to purchase items from the classroom store. Details on attached sheet; items on sheet will be varied according to the individual likes and dislikes of the students in the classroom.

Incentive program is built into the academic day; reinforcing math, purchasing and job skills.

How and when students will be advised of their grades

A weekly activity within this course will be the participation of “Miramontes Money and banking” this will be used as an interactive way for students to view and be advised of their course progress to date. Specifically students will be made aware of their current progress in the areas of functional curriculum and behaviors; they will be given rewards and incentives for positive progress made and instructed on how to improve progress through activities and assignments. In addition Ms. Miramontes will be in contact with their teachers and will be keep them updated on positive and negative classroom issues with progress monitoring during the 4th week of each quarter, as well as review progress reports and any additional reports from classes.

Post-Assessments

A post-test will be given to each student to determine:

** Primary assessment will be: accomplishment /progress of IEP Goals/objectives.

1. Individual growth in course content.

2. Accomplishment on individual growth within performance objectives.

3. Accomplishment on individual growth within social/communication skills out of the classroom.

Classroom Rules & Expectations

It is expected that all students will demonstrate respect for themselves, each other and staff members while attending Rancho High School. All students are expected to come to school prepared physically and mentally to do the best they can each and every day. They are expected to have necessary supplies and materials, including homework. They are expected to follow all the rules and regulations of the CCSD and Rancho High School. They expect to be treated fairly and with respect by their peers and faculty members of Rancho High School.
