Reading comprehension. Read the story. Answer the 5 questions in complete sentences.

Last night Mr. and Mrs. Rojas stayed home. It was cold and rainy and they didn’t want to go out in the bad weather. Mrs. Rojas made some popcorn and ice tea. At 8:00, Mr. and Mrs. Rojas went into the living room, sat on the sofa and began the movie and ate and drank. At 8:15, Mr. and Mrs. Rojas realized they already watched the movie last year and they didn’t want to watch it again.

“Now what?” asked Mr. Rojas. “Let’s play cards!” answered Mrs. Rojas. At 8:30 Mr. and Mrs. Rojas started to play cards. They were playing for about 10 minutes when Mr. Rojas looked out the window. The rain changed to snow and the trees were covered in beautiful white snowflakes. “I’m happy we stayed home tonight. It looks beautiful outside but this weather is very dangerous to drive in.” said Mr. Rojas. “You’re right,” said Mrs. Rojas, “but I’m bored. Let’s play some music and dance.”

Mr. Rojas was surprised. “Dance? But I really don’t ….”

“Oh come on!” Mrs. Rojas insisted. She put on a romantic CD and they both started to dance. They were dancing for about 1 minute when suddenly the music stopped and the lights went out. Mrs. Rojas laughed. “We’re just not very lucky tonight, are we?” she said. Mr. Rojas said, “Of course we’re lucky! We are together!” He kissed her and continued to dance with her, in the dark and without music.

The Beatles:

The Beatles were one of the most influential music groups of the rock era, and many consider them the best musical group on Earth. Initially they affected the post-war baby boom generation of Britain and the U.S. during the 1960s, and later the rest of the world. Certainly they were the most successful group, with global sales exceeding 1.1 billion records.

While they were originally famous for light-weight pop music (and the extreme hysterical reaction they received from young women), their later works achieved a combination of popular and critical acclaim perhaps unequaled in the 20th century.

Eventually, they became more than recording artists, branching out into film and — particularly in the case of John Lennon — political activism. They achieved an iconic status beyond mere celebrity, with far reaching effects difficult to exaggerate.

The members of the group were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, all from Liverpool, England.

Beatlemania began in the UK and exploded following the appearance of the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in the United States, on February 9, 1964. The pop-music band became a worldwide phenomenon with worshipful fans, hysterical adulation, and denunciations by culture commentators and others such as Frank Sinatra.

Some of this was confusion over the sources of their music (a similar confusion was evinced in 1956 over Elvis Presley), and some of it was simply an incredulous reaction to the length of their hair.

Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley was born on January 8th 1935 in Mississippi. His twin brother died at birth. Elvis grew up in a poor home, but his parents, Vernon and Gladys Presley were kind and loving

After he left school, Elvis worked in different jobs. He worked in cinemas and supermarkets, and he worked as a lorry driver. This was the job he liked most.

When he was 13, his mother gave him a guitar. Later the family moved to Memphis, Tennessee

Two people helped Elvis in his career. One was Sam Phillips. Sam had a record company called Sun Records. He was the first person to realise that Elvis was a good singer. The second person to help Elvis was Tom Parker.Tom became Elvis' manager in 1955 and he made him into a famous rock and roll star.

In 1956 Elvis recorded a song called Heartbreak Hotel. It was a hit – it sold 1 million copies. In the same year he made his first film in Hollywood. “Love me tender” Then in 1958 he joined the army and went to Germany to be a soldier. When he returned to the USA in the early 60’s pop music was not the same. British bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were the new stars.

Elvis and Priscilla Beaulieu married on May 1, 1967 They had one daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. On February 23, 1972 they separated

Elvis was a millionaire but he was a very lonely man. In his last years he became fat and very sad.

He died of a heart attack in August 1977 at Graceland, Memphis. He was only 42 years old. For millions of fans, Elvis is still the King.
