Prayer Talking to God

Basil Marotta Jericho Ministries 719-510-3777

What is prayer…it is simply communication with God. He wants to have a vibrant personal relationship with us. It is not up to God to initiate…it is up to us…God won’t force himself on us…we can have as close a relationship with God as we want.

Session Outline: In response to the disciples question, “Lord teach us to pray? (Luke 11:1),’Jesus taught them…Matt 6:9-13

Matt. 6:9-14 "This, then, is how you should pray:

"`Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. 14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

We now know this as “The Lord’s Prayer.”

What can we glean from this teaching of Jesus?

This a prayer of petition…It starts with praise…

Then He wants us to ask…John 14:13-14 “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.14 You may ask me anything in my name, and I will do it.”

John 15:7 “If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given to you.” Also in John 16:23-24.

Note before giving them the Lord’s prayer…Jesus tells them, Matt 6:6-8 “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

Mat 7:7-8 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be open to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks the door will be opened.”

Mark 11:22-24 Jesus…Have faith in God. I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, “Go, throw yourself into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

Things to note…God’s kingdom has already come because Jesus, the king, has come….and in Luke 17:20-21 Jesus tells the Pharisees who asked , when will the kingdom come? “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, “here it is,” or “There it is,” because the kingdom of God is within you.”

“Give us today our daily bread”….God wants us to pray for provision, a home, job, car, whatever we need.

In Exodus 16 we are told that God provided manna (food) for the Israelites daily for years.

So don’t pray for “yearly bread” but for what you need today and the near future.

1. So pray for what do you need today...

2. Pray for both material and spiritual needs.

3. Ask, “Lord, give me the Word that applies to my situation today!

So, if you are fearful, stressed out, worried about something…and can’t sleep…look to the pattern in the Lord’s prayer,…it implies that God knows our needs and will take care of our daily needs!!!

Things, I have learned about prayer…

Six Principles for effective prayer:

1. Schedule it (if you don’t-you won’t do it!)………….I always read paper…news junky

2. Find a quiet place no distractions…(Mat 6:5-8 NIV) "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

{6} But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

{7} And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. {8} Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

3. Have a quiet mind (this is the hardest part…elaborate

4. Seek Him first...not what you want Are we looking for the face of God or the hand of God

5. Ask His will in all matters (Mark 14:36) (1Jn. 5:14-15)

(Mark 14:36) "Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will." Why did Jesus come…in obedience to the Father

Remember…(1 John 5:14-15 NIV) This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. {15} And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him.

6. Pray with authority against the world, flesh & devil (Luke 10:19)

(Luke 10:19) I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

Pattern for prayer:

A cts

C onfession

T hanksgiving

S upplication

This really changed my prayer life…by the time I get to supplication…asking for things…I usually have things in perspective…then I ask for others first…by the time I get to asking for myself it seems that it isn’t such a big deal

1 Thes 5:17 pray continuously…What does it mean…write down prayers

Life Implication:

Daily prayer to God is the only way to stay close to Him. God desires to spend time with us every day. He wants you to come to Him for everything, not just when you find yourself in a tough spot...or as a last resort. Psalm 5:3 In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.

E. M. Bounds…The church is looking for better methods; God is looking for better men…What the church needs today is not more or better machinery, not new organizations or more and novel methods, but men whom the Holy Spirit can use-men of prayer, men mighty in prayer. The Holy Spirit does not flow through methods, but through men. He does not anoint plans, but men-men of prayer.

For discussion: What has been your prayer pattern? How can you begin today to develop a more powerful prayer habit that will last?
