Practice of Planning Experiment Questions.

These are worth 6 marks. Sometimes you will have carried out a similar experiment but most of the time you will not have done anything like it. Remember it’s the principles that are important as follows:

Independent (one you change) – 1 mark

Dependent (one you measure) – 2 marks (usually what you will measure, and a timescale)

Control (keep the same) – 2 marks

Repeat – 1 mark

Top tips – use some of the spare space on the page to write a mini plan first using the headings above BUT make sure you give details that are specific to the experiment in the question.

1) Jan 2013 - Fish can be produced in large numbers on fish farms.

Design an investigation to find out if the growth of fish is affected by the temperature

of the water in which they are farmed.

2) Jan 2014 - Describe an investigation to find out if leaves growing at the bottom of trees are greener than leaves growing at the top of trees.

Your answer should include experimental details and be written in full sentences and

paragraphs.

3) Jan 2012 - Farmers use bird scarers that make a sudden loud noise to frighten birds away from their crops.

Design an investigation to find out if noise affects the amount of crops birds eat

4) June 2013 1B - Commercial flower growers keep their plants in greenhouses under artificial light.

Describe an investigation to find out if the length of time that plants are exposed to

light affects how long it takes for flowers to appear.

5) June 2013 1BR - Describe an investigation to find out the most suitable amount of calcium ions needed to get the best growth in rats.

6) June 2012 - Describe an investigation to find out if keeping chickens indoors increases their growth.

7) June 2011 - Describe an experiment you could do to find out the effect of pH on the growth of yeast.
