Cambridge IGCSE English Language

WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?

IGCSE English Language (International GCSE) will help develop your reading, writing and oral communication skills. The course provides the opportunity to study writing techniques and use these to help you develop your own ability to write with clarity and imagination. You will also study spoken language and take part in speaking and listening activities.

WHAT ARE THE KEY TOPICS IT WILL COVER?

The GCSE contains all of the following elements:

● Writing Skills: three pieces of coursework – a piece of descriptive writing including a piece of descriptive writing and a film review. (Coursework accounts for 40% of your total marks.)

● Reading Skills: one piece of coursework – a letter to a newspaper in response to a controversial article; an examination comprehension question.

● Spoken Language Study: a talk/presentation accounting for 20% of your total marks.

All of the above will be assessed by coursework, much of which can be prepared both at home and in class using personal computers and allowing for drafting and re-drafting.

● Exam Preparation: for the exam at the end of May which includes both reading comprehension and short writing tasks.

WHO WILL THE COURSE SUIT?

English is a qualification requested and highly regarded by many employers. It is very important for those wishing to go on to study higher-level courses at college and university. It is also for those who wish to pursue a leisure activity leading to an important and nationally recognised qualification.

If you are 16-19 yrs, you can enrol on this course if you have a grade “D” in GCSE English or English Language. If you are 19+ you should either have a grade D GCSE English or English Language or you can request a written assessment from Adult Learner Services by telephoning 624455.

IS THERE A QUALIFICATION AT THE END OF THE COURSE?

Yes, a Cambridge IGCSE in English Language (equivalent to all other English GCSE qualifications.) The final exam takes place during the day at Priestley College. You may need to book time off work in order to attend the exam (half a day).

IF YES, HOW WILL IT BE ASSESSED?

Written Coursework: 40%

Speaking and Listening Assessments: 20%

Examination: 40%

You will sit one exam of 2 hours which will take place at Priestley College during the day.
