Dear Students:

Welcome to Mr. Furman’s Pre-AICE Advanced Communications Class! I look forward to meeting and working with all of you. This course emphasizes the improvement of reading comprehension, literary analysis, writing process, and oral response to a variety of literary genres through cooperative group work, technology, and research, among other things. Furthermore, as part of the Cambridge Academy, you will also prepare for the examinations which focus on Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening. For starters, let’s review the aims and expectations of this class:

AIMS:

• Enable students to communicate accurately, appropriately and effectively in speech and writing.

• Enable students to understand and respond appropriately to what they hear, read, and experience.

• Encourage students to enjoy and appreciate variety of language.

• Complement students’ other areas of study by developing skills of a more general application (e.g. analysis, synthesis, drawing of inferences).

• Promote students’ personal development and an understanding of themselves and others.

The various genres of reading passages or writing tasks likely to be set in the exam are all included (letter, report, news report, magazine article, travel writing, speech, dialogue), as are types of writing set in the composition paper or for coursework portfolio: informative, argument, discursive, descriptive, and narrative.

Pre-AICE covers the skills of skim-reading for gist, scan-reading for data identification, selecting, modifying, developing, paraphrasing, summarizing, structuring, sequencing, supporting and argument evaluation. It also stresses throughout the importance of understanding implicit (as well as explicit) meaning, making inferences, recognizing writers’ devices when reading, and the consideration of voice, audience, register, purpose, and the adoption of an appropriate style and accuracy of expression when writing. Each unit includes all or most of the Assessment Objectives for Reading(4), Writing (5), and Speaking and Listening (5), so that there is continual practice and reinforcement of the objectives across a range of tasks and topics. There are speaking and listening opportunities in every unit, some of which can be assessed for exam purposes.

Students will be expected to create an e-Portfolio that includes all formal writing from the course.

**All formal writing will be expected to be submitted through Collier County School’s ANGEL software program (: Students will be informed and guided through this process at the beginning of this course.)

II. Materials

For this class, you will need:

1. A binder with loose leaf paper

2. Pencils and blue or black pens

3. Flash Drive

4. Highlighters

III. Preparedness and Expectations

As a professional educator, I will treat students with respect and dignity and challenge them continually. In return, I expect students to abide by the following: Show respect and courtesy to all students and the teacher. Be prepared and on time for every class. Comply with all classroom, GCHS, and CCPS rules, procedures, and policies. Always try to do the best you are capable of doing.

Failure to follow any of these expectations will result in verbal and written warnings, lunch detentions, parent contact, and/or office referral.

Students will be required to write and print their formal writing on the computer. Printing should be done at home or in the GCHS library; I have a very limited supply of ink cartridges.

Also, make sure to constantly check ANGEL/Teacher Website for assignments and additional resources as directed.

IV. Plagiarism

Plagiarism Policy: Plagiarism is a serious act of academic dishonesty and will not be tolerated. Students must cite all work that is not their own. This requires students to give credit for any and all information used as the basis for essays, presentation projects, and any other assignment. A works cited must be used whether information from primary or secondary sources is summarized, paraphrased, or quoted. Any work submitted which is plagiarized is a violation of Collier County Public School Plagiarism Policy, and could result in a zero grade for that assignment.

V. Grading Policy

Your grades will be tallied by points earned each semester. A percentage will be the result of points earned out of points given. That percentage equals the grade. The grading scale has been adopted by the Collier County Public Schools.

Students should see their Student Planners for specific grade ranges (A-F). Student compositions will be graded according to the Cambridge and FCAT rubrics.

VI. Late Work

Keep in mind that work is due when it is due. NO EXTENSIONS! No EXTENTIONS!

If you are absent it is up to the student to communicate with the teacher about work they need to make up. Don’t assume the teacher is going to hunt the student down to give missed assignments.

Homework is due at the beginning of class and should not be completed during class the day it is due.

Ten points will be deducted daily off any late assignments. The only exception is being absent, but the student has to communicate with the teacher before or after the absence date or dates.

Don’t wait a week later to find out what you missed. Find out what you missed the day you come back or communicate with the teacher before you’re absent if possible.

VII. Make Up Work

Students are responsible for obtaining their makeup work once they return to class. A student who fails to make up a quiz or test within a week will receive a zero for the grade. Students may not come in during lunch to make up quizzes or tests.
