IIS-HRJob Description and Person SpecificationJob title: Teaching Fellow in Islamic Studies, STEP Location: London Reports to: STEP Programme LeaderHours per week:35Contract typeEmployeeLength of contractPermanentSection 1: Job description Overview of the roleThe post will involve convenorship of modules, contributing to lectures and specialist support on a range of topics, leading and developing teaching and learning approaches for the subject, organising and conducting seminars, coordinating MA Research module, supervision of postgraduate taught dissertations, maintaining oversight of the programme assessments, as well as supporting the core functioning of our degree programmes through providing academic advice and undertaking academic-related coordination and administration. The post of Teaching Fellow will also involve student support, assessment of academic performance and provision of feedback, as well as general advice and pastoral care. The position is envisaged as an academic role requiring pertinent academic and research credentials, teaching and leadership experience, decision-making and problem-solving capacity, as well as a thorough understanding of the programme aims and vision, subject matter and relevant pedagogies. Main duties and responsibilities Teaching and learning (T&L): To contribute to the formulation of T&L approaches for the MA Muslim Societies and Civilisation and associated sessions, also in collaboration with the department’s Teacher Educator and Teaching and Learning Tutor. To plan for and secure continuous improvement, raising standards and introducing innovative approaches for best student achievement, while establishing a vision for T&L in the MA subject area. Teaching-related activities: To effectively perform convenorship of modules, as well as contributing directly to the teaching of the programme’s modules according to the post holder’s subject expertise. To support the development of the faculty’s teaching practice, in line with best practice in the Higher Education (HE) sector. To contribute to the planning, design and development of objectives and material. To support learning by organising and conducting seminars and/or tutorials in the ways defined in the programme curriculum. To maintain oversight of module assessments by ensuring consistency of marking across the modules via the moderation process; that feedback is provided within the set guidelines for quality and timeliness and that the methods of assessment are appropriate, robust and consistent across the board. To act as a Research Supervisor for students and coordinate the research methods training for students, and to supervise, train and coordinate research supervisors within and outside the Department.Student engagement and performance: To set and manage students’ expectations and help them achieve the highest standards of learning and professional development. The post holder will act as a first point of contact for students, providing subject specialist information as well as general advice and support, including guidance on students’ performance and assessments. To provide general pastoral care, as related to MA modules, and in the role of Academic Adviser to students on their respective programmes. To support the students in their training as teachers (lesson planning, teaching observation etc.), depending on the post holder’s expertise and experience. To signpost students to further sources of information and advice when needed and refer students to specialist support when required. To systematically analyse students’ performance and maintain appropriate records in order to ensure pro-active intervention when required. To actively seek and implement improvements to enrich the student experience.Student access: To ensure equitable access to learning for all students via the formulation of appropriate policies and practices. To be aware of any health & safety and welfare issues, and raise concerns with the Programme Leader when necessary.Research: To review and disseminate research studies, as well as to keep up to date with learning and teaching developments, relevant to the department’s programme aims, in order to foster new insights, expanding, refining and testing hypotheses and ideas. To engage in research and other scholarly activities and contribute to the development of thought and practice in the field through publications, conference papers and other outputs.Coordination and administrative duties: To undertake effectively and efficiently any coordination and administrative role in support of teaching provision and programmatic activities. To support the Programme Leader in the successful operational management and coordination of the programme and contribute to the formulation and review of the programme’s structures and policies. To assist with enrolment and recruitment procedures as appropriate. To attend and contribute to all relevant STEP team meetings, as well as other pertinent meetings at the departmental and interdepartmental levels.Professional development: To constantly explore improvement and innovation in his/her professional practice. To keep up to date with developments in the HE sector, both in regard to the MA-related subjects and the pertinent teaching methodologies. To plan for the incremental acquisition of skills and knowledge related to the post, and to disseminate the acquired expertise across the department.The post holder will be expected to undertake such other duties appropriate to the post as may reasonably be required of him/her, consistent with the mission, vision and values of the IIS. Experience in team building and leadership.Teaching experience in Secondary Education.Possessing a qualification / training in coaching/mentoring/counselling, or commitment to achieve it within 3 years from employment start.Essential/ DesirableEEEDDKnowledge Requirements Research-level understanding of the disciplines of humanities and social sciences as they relate to the study of Muslim societies and civilisations, as demonstrated by curriculum of study and publications.Knowledge of current developments in best practice in teaching and learning in HE, with track record of significant contributions (e.g. publications, conference participations etc.).Knowledge of current developments in best practice in teaching and learning in Secondary Education.Knowledge of systematic methods and approaches for student development and success, and subsequent employment. Good level of knowledge of Quality Assurance and administrative processes in HE, with the capacity of actively contributing in reviews and other exercises.ScoreEEDDDMain Skills and AbilitiesProven experience in organising and leading student groups in HE, as well as advising students and supervising their work, with track record of pertinent training/CPD.High level written and oral communication skills, as proven by publication/ conference papers record.High level of ICT competence to support teaching and learning, and to pro-actively innovate the students’ learning experience.
