≈ This conference will focus on bringing the early childhood community coming together to support the Social Emotional Competence of young children and families. We all strive to develop children that are confident, competent and resilient. This conference will offer sessions that set the foundation for the development of these characteristics as well as practical strategies that can be used in the home, school or classroom. Collaboration among agencies and networking to build stronger families is also an emphasis in various sessions. Even administrators will be inspired with practical ideas to keep their staff motivated and energized. Come join us for an inspiring, fun filled day. ≈

♥ Parents Interacting With Infants ♥

October 19th & 20th

John A Logan College

8:30-4:00

Presented by

Academic Development Institute

This is a two day conference. It is designed for anyone working with infants and toddlers and their families. Parents Interacting with Infants, (PIWI) was originally developed by Tweety Yates and Jeanette McCollum at the University of Illinois for parents with children with special needs. Academic Development Institute (ADI) is the State Office for Parents as Teachers in Illinois and has worked with Tweety and Jeanette to adapt the original eight-module training to four modules appropriate for PAT parent group meetings. Through this adapted training, participants gain knowledge and understanding of parent/child relationships, the role of the teacher as facilitator, how to set up environments for positive parent/child interactions and the development of topics based on the interests and needs of the children and parents that encourage discussion, observation and interaction.

The parent-child relationship is at the core of this training and all elements support this relationship. This workshop helps parent educators ensure that their group sessions or home visits with parents are effective by emphasizing child development. The workshop outlines an approach for collaborating with parents to provide a developmentally supportive environment for their children by expanding the parent’s knowledge and understanding of their child’s development, building on natural interaction styles, and acting on parent preferences.

This pre-conference has been approved for 12 hours of EI credits.

♥ A Day with Lilian Katz ♥

October 20th

John A Logan College

8:30-4:00

Morning Session: Issues in the Assessment of Young Children For more than a decade, early childhood educators have been discussing issues of curriculum and teaching methods in terms of their developmental appropriateness. The concept of developmental appropriateness can also be extended to issues related to the assessment of children during the early years. Basic principles of assessment in the early years will be presented. Discussion of some basic and general ways to assess children’s general development, and specific measures for assessing social development will be presented.

Afternoon Session: Introduction of the Project Approach with Young Children Lilian, who is the author of the Project Approach, will give an over view of project work; how to choose a topic, starting the project, keeping the project moving forward, and documentation of the children’s work. Descriptions of projects and a discussion of why they are an important aspect of an early childhood curriculum will be demonstrated. Several examples of good projects will be shown.

CCR&R will present the book, Gifts from Lilian Katz: Stories, Anecdotes, and Profound Thoughts, to all who participate in the training.

♥Art Exhibit♥

The art exhibit always adds an exciting atmosphere to the conference. Fresh flowers and the colors of nature are our theme for this year’s art exhibit. We would love to add a child’s perspective of nature. Providing children with fresh flowers or leaves or baskets of found materials from a walk, along with different mediums such as paints, wire, markers, clay, or a camera to let them represent what they see will add to the already beautiful surroundings at JALC. Using your imagination you can help them create art work that can be used in the art show, as table decorations or as hanging decorations in the hall. Along with the beautiful creations the children create we would love for you to tell the story of the ‘learning that took place’. Provide a brief description of how the concept was introduced, the materials used, the learning that took place as the children explored, and/or photos of the children participating in the activity. The masterpieces can be delivered to Terry White at the Child Care Resource and Referral office located in Carterville anytime after October 1st and no later than Wednesday October 18th. Art materials can be picked up at the end of the conference. If you have questions feel free to call Terry @ 985-5975 ext. 232 for assistance. We look forward to another wonderful art show.
