Homecoming news

The Snow Covered Quarantineby Cheyenne MooreOn Feb 7th a large cold front came through the Enid area freezing the roads till they were nothing but a sheet of ice. Through the remainder of that week students did not attend school and instead attended online class at regular school hours. With all the ice it made it difficult for some people to attend the online class due to connection problems but such people were given opportunities to make up for the lost time. After only a week of going to school in person on February 14, a large snow storm blew through the Midwest shutting many schools down and then forcing them to resort to online schooling. Kremlin-Hillsdale only did online schooling from February 15-18 as the 19 was parent teacher conferences and there was no school. Vegetarianismby Kellie McKee There are very different effects to being a vegetarian. Everyone assumes that being a vegetarian is a bad thing and you’re a weak person if you are. Some people go vegetarian or vegan for the health benefits, for the economic benefits, or even to challenge themselves. There are different types of vegetarians, Lacto-ovo-vegetarians, meaning they eat eggs and dairy. Lacto-vegetarians, meaning they eat dairy, but no eggs, leaving Ovo-vegetarians- they eat eggs but no dairy. Some vegans do not eat any animal products, no eggs, and no dairy. There is the pescitarian diet, meaning you will eat fish, and seafood, but not any land animals. Benefits include a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, lower risks of cancer and obesity, weight loss, and a lower risk of type two diabetes. Some religious reasons cause people not to eat meat, and other reasons are for the concern of the animal- mainly animal abuse. Economic benefits include, reducing your carbon footprint by seventy-three percent, and greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by sixty percent. It costs a lot to convert grass into meat, in the article by Independent, says. The pipeline, which carries oil from North Dakota to Illinois, has drawn significant opposition from environmentalists and tribes over the years, spurring massive protests. The push also comes after President Biden revoked a permit for the Keystone XL pipeline, which would have transported oil from Canada to the U.S.Kremlin-Hillsdale High School Boys Basketball by Hannah BaughThe boys’ basketball team for Kremlin did pretty well this year. They had a record of 7 wins and 14 losses. Kadence Stewart said that team wise they worked really hard together, and played well as a team. At the districts this year they were close to winning to move on but lost with a three point deficit. Another player, senior Matthew Pritchett, said his favorite game this basketball season was the Ringwood game, because he had made some threes and got to play in the game. He also stated that the team this year was a good team that stuck together whenever they were down. The boys are looking forward to next year's basketball season. The Kremlin-Hillsdale baseball practice and gamesby Cheyenne MooreFebruary 15 was the first practice that the whole high school baseball team could attend. Those who had not been playing basketball had been practicing since the first week of January and so they were a bit more prepared and warmed up for the baseball season. Those who had not gone out for basketball had spent a lot of time on batting practice before the baseball season had officially started. Once the weather was better and the team was all together they began their fielding work and team scenarios for practice. On February 27 the high school team scrimmaged the Regulators and the Medford high school team. Their first scrimmage was at 1:00 p.m. against the Regulators but then only played Medford from 5:00 p.m. till 6:00 p.m. because there was a problem with the field lights as it was beginning to get dark. As one of the players I feel that the practices have been well spent but that there is plenty of room for improvement. The first baseball games for the Kremlin-Hillsdale high school team were on March first and second. The first game was against Ringwood at Ringwood at 5:30 p.m. The Broncs lost 10 to 2. The next game was against OBA and we lost 7 to 4 despite playing pretty well.Band Updates by Kellie McKee The High school Band traveled to Perry for pre-districts. They will travel to Enid High, for districts on March 10th. There will not be any scores this year due to Covid, and schools not being able to make it for competitions. The Kremlin High school band will continue to push through any obstacles that come their way. In further news, the band kids will start to practice their ensembles, and work in their groups to perfect the songs for competition in the spring. Junior High students will practice ensembles and they will march during the spring concert. There is not going to be Tri State this year, nor Honor Band. The Spring concert will be held outside at the football field, and band royalty will be announced there, since there was no Christmas concert. High School Girls Basketballby Jayden GerhardThe high school basketball team finished their season off with 14 wins and 9 losses. They also finished 3rd place in the Cherokee Strip and the Cherokee tournament. We interviewed Taylor Ellis, a senior, on the high school team. She said, “This past season wasn’t like any other season! This season was very different because we didn’t get to play every game on the schedule because of Covid, being quarantined, and snowstorms. Those things took away our ability to have our senior night. I was just very glad we got to play as many games as we did! We had a pretty good season; we came out with a winning season. We went into the playoffs playing Timberlake for the district title and came out as District Champs. We went into regionals playing Leedey for the first round and came up short and had to play Drummond. Unfortunately we ended our season that day, losing a close game to Drummond. But we fought until the end and that's the only thing that really matters. We had so much fun.” Overall we here at the newspaper, thought it was a pretty good season and we are looking forward to next year's basketball season. The Covid Vaccine by Hannah BaughThe Covid vaccine was released early for how bad the virus has been getting around the world. The first doses of the vaccine went to 172,403 people, about 100 doses per person is 4.36. It is still being given to people around the US. In Oklahoma the vaccine has been given to over 500 teachers. It is very easy to get your hands on the vaccine. The vaccine has phases; the first phase is where long term care residents and staff, health care workers, etc. receive the vaccine. The second phase is first responders paid and unpaid, adults 65 and up, etc. The third phase is teachers and staff in educational careers. The very last stage, which is the fourth stage, is all the Oklahoma residents. On December 12th, 2020 the vaccine was approved by the FDA for emergency use in the United States, but now anyone can get the vaccination.
