Secretary of State Jesse White to Offer Many Services to Fairgoers

Springfield – Secretary of State Jesse White is pleased to announce that representatives from his office will once again be at the Illinois State Fair to provide driver and vehicle services and to highlight the many other public services available to the people of Illinois through his office.

“I encourage everyone visiting the Illinois State Fair to stop by the Secretary of State tent and take advantage of the services we are providing,” said White. “We are conveniently located on Brian Raney Avenue near the southeast corner of the fairgrounds.”

White noted fairgoers can renew their license plates, apply for vehicle title and registration, obtain disability parking placards and purchase random-number specialty plates. The office will also have Illinois Professional Sports Team license plates available, including the Chicago Bears, Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Bulls, Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox. These plates are available for purchase at the Vehicle Services booth in the Secretary of State’s tent. Visitors also can renew their driver’s license or state ID card (proper identification required), take vision and written Rules of the Road exams and complete a voter registration application at the Driver Services booth.

U.S. military veterans also can obtain a veteran designation on their driver’s license or state ID card. Staff from the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs will be on-site daily assisting in the certification process required to obtain a veterans designation. Veterans are encouraged to bring a copy of their DD-214 or a Certification of Military Service (NA Form 13038), which will then be certified by the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs prior to issuance of the driver’s license or state ID card.

Also at the tent fairgoers can take advantage of the Pick-a-Plate Program, which allows Illinois motorists to search for vanity and personalized license plates and purchase them through the Secretary of State’s website at .

Secretary White also serves as Illinois State Librarian, and staff from the Illinois State Library will be on hand to answer questions about the variety of services offered by the official library of state government. State Fair visitors can set up a tour of the Illinois State Library in downtown Springfield, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., by calling 217-782-7845.

“I encourage parents to visit the Secretary of State Police area located just west of the Secretary of State tent inside the Kids Korner section of the Emmerson Building, where fairgoers can take advantage of our child safety program,” said White. “This free program provides parents with a take-home copy of their child’s digital fingerprints and photo, which law enforcement officials can use if a missing child report is filed.”

State-of-the-art digital equipment and software is used to capture a child’s photo and fingerprints, which are saved on a CD as an information sheet that parents can complete with their child’s other vital information. The only record of the visit goes home with the family for safekeeping. Should the child become lost, a parent can submit the security/identification document to law enforcement officials to assist with a search. The hours for fingerprinting are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. daily.

At the Illinois State Archives booth visitors can access the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900; the Illinois State Death Index, 1916-1950; and the Illinois Civil War Veterans database.

Visitors may also register to become an organ/tissue donor. It takes very little time and one donor can save or greatly improve up to 25 lives. For more information about the Secretary of State’s Organ/Tissue Donor Registry, visit or call 800-210-2106.

A Back-to-School display offers materials for teachers and students, including a Teacher’s Resource Guide with a list of Secretary of State publications available for classroom use. Illinois Highway maps also are available free of charge.

The Secretary of State tent is open daily during the fair from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Kids Korner

Directly west of the Secretary of State tent is Kids Korner, where White’s office is offering a free bicycle safety course for children. The course is open daily throughout the fair from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Senior Center

Seniors are invited to cool off and enjoy a variety of informational displays and activities at the air-conditioned Senior Center inside the Illinois Building near the main gate. At the Secretary of State booth seniors can renew their driver’s license (with proper identification) if the road exam is not required. They may also obtain a free, non-expiring photo ID card if they are age 65 or older. Seniors will also be able to purchase renewal stickers, apply for vehicle title and registration, and obtain disability parking placards. The Secretary of State Pick-a-Plate Program also will be available. All services are provided by the Secretary of State’s Mobile Unit from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Those with visual and physical disabilities may access an online catalog of talking books, provided by the Illinois State Library’s Talking Book and Braille Service (TBBS), and learn more about other programs and services provided by TBBS for the print disabled.
