Consider what your interests are and why you want to learn about a specific topic. The more innately interested in your topic, the more you are likely to learn something with/of depth! Students will pick one topic to research (no more than 2 of the same topic per class!)Topic #1 – Castles Imagine that what is currently on the site of Burnaby Mountain School is, in fact, a medieval castle that was converted into a high school. Using the current layout of the school, create a map that illustrates “the Castle’s” original structure. Make sure to detail where the Lord would have eaten and slept. Where would the kitchen, gardens, bathroom, armory, stables, well, and other important structures have been located? Where would the market, moat, gates and walls have been? Considering that about 800 – 900 years have passed since the castle’s “heyday”, some portions of castle and it’s outlying property may no longer exist at all. Use examples of castle blueprints, aerial photography and current photographs of medieval castles to design your project. It is recommended that you make a model to convey your knowledge. Presentation: Make sure you explain what historians mean by the word “castle”. You will need to explain the function of the major structures and the layout of a typical medieval castle. Topic #2 – Cathedrals/Church Architecture 4038600869950Imagine that it is the 12th century, and you are on the Bishop of Burnaby Mountain’s committee to design a cathedral in the city of Burnaby. The bishop wants his cathedral to rival those of Lincoln, Durham and Aachen (found in Europe). Research these cathedrals as a basis for your design. Provide us with a drawing or model of the exterior of this cathedral and an interior blue print. Make sure that your design uses the terminology of the architectural elements of churches/cathedrals. Make sure to include the physical dimensions (height, length, etc.) and to design the windows of your cathedral. Presentation: Explain what a cathedral was and what purpose it served. Also, what made cathedrals different from churches? Topic #3 - ManuscriptsThe illuminated manuscripts created by Benedictine monks collected the knowledge of the ancients and celebrated the religious teachings of Christianity. Research how these manuscripts were created and how they were styled. Using your textbook or supplemental library books, you and the other monastics in your group need illuminate the text, demonstrating the coloration, graphic style and imagery that was common to illuminations of the Middle Ages. Presentation: Explain what an illuminated manuscript was. Show us some examples from the Middle Ages. Also, explain what purpose these manuscripts served and how they were a reflection of the Christian church’s values. It may be helpful to use a manuscript that describes a journal entry of a day of in the life as a monk of nun.5505450635000 Topic #4 – Knights and TournamentsTournaments were popular “war games” and training for knights and the lords whom they served. Tournaments of the early Middle Ages demonstrated the skills and strength of knights through a variety of activities. By the High Middle Ages, jousting became the highlight of any tournament, occasionally leading to serious injury. Research what a ’typical’ tournament would have included. Your project is to create a tournament with a description of events, drawings of the weapons, armor as well as the flags & coats of arms representing the various competitors and a diagram of where the events will take place at Mountain castle.Presentation: Make sure to explain the origins of tournaments and the types of events that were part of one. Also, show us examples of the weapons and armor that would have been used. Topic #5 – Stained Glass-34290016954500Stained glass windows are one of the lasting pictorial art forms of the Middle Ages. They required a knowledge of glass making, engineering and artistic talent. Your group is to research the method by which these masterpieces were made, and then to design and create one of your own artistic representations to be fitted over the two transom windows of Mrs. Vangelista classroom. Presentation: Explain the purpose and the process by which stained glass windows were made. Additionally, show us some examples of stained glass windows from the Middle Ages and explain some of the common images or themes seen in these works of art. Can you find stained glass today? With the Catholic Church having significant control throughout Europe, its teachings that women should be obedient to their fathers and husbands had a profound influence. Your group is to research what life was really like for women. What rights if any did they have and what were their responsibilities and describe their n quality of life during this time period.Your project should include pictures of women and illustrations of their roles. Presentation: Describe the daily lives and responsibilities of women during and their role within society during the Middle Ages. How was it both similar and different from the role of women today? Topic #7 – Architecture -China and IndiaDifferent cultural and religious group that have ruled China and India have created beautiful and strong buildings to showcase their strength and wealth. How is the architecture a reflection of the cultural or religious group who constructed it? What interesting aspects does it contain? Do you think all people would have enjoyed it during this time, why or why not? Research an Ancient Chinese, Ancient Japan or Ancient Indian military. Who pledged their military service and what were the roles of soldiers and leaders? Did they use specific weapons or have an official uniform? How successful was this army at invading other groups or defending against attackers?Presentation: Describe why it was important for a society to defend itself and to take over other places. What other factors would have helped or hindered the military’s ability to be successful at the time? Research the development and impact of medieval warfare and defence ic #9: Interesting Individuals and LeadersOccasionally, certain individuals in a country are able to gain power or influence a large group of people. They may bring about positive change in the territory they are ruling, they may cause hardships, or sometimes both. Choose one of the following individuals to research: Joan of Arc, William the Conqueror, King Arthur, King John (The Magna Carta)Provide their biographical details (year of birth and death, important life moments, etc.). What was their occupation and how were they able to gain control of such a large group of people? What aspects of their rule made them heroic and what aspects caused conflict? Please compare them to a current ruler in the country where your chosen individual lived. Presentation: Make sure you explain the individual’s importance at the time they ruled. Also, is there any aspect of their rule that is still present today?Topic #10: The Crusades Europeans fought in the Crusades because of religion and land. The Crusades were wars in which the Christians of Europe fought against the Muslims for the control of the Holy land. It was another example as to how much influence the Church had over people of the Middle Ages. The Middle East continues to experience turmoil to this day. Presentation: Research a recent war in the Middle East. Identify any connections to religion, land, and historical ic #11 – The Black Death and Modern Day EpidemicsResearch a modern day epidemic, such as the Ebola virus epidemic, or the AIDS virus epidemic. Compare this epidemic with the Black Death. How did various aspects of modern civilization allow some people to remain calm? Consider medical knowledge, hospitals, communication, sanitation levels, and knowledge about how disease is spread.Presentation: Facts about the plague, explanation of how, where and when it spread, symptoms and what people try to rid themselves of it. Economic, Political, Social and Physical effects of the plague. Which epidemic is the worst and why?Topic #12 - Heroes Thomas Becket, Eleanor of Acquitaine, and Richard the Lion Hearted were heroes during the Middle Ages. What did they do that made them so popular with people all over Europe? Presentation: How do these people’s character and accomplishments reflect the values of medieval society? Name one living hero to you and compare them to the characters ic #13 Medieval JapanHow did early China influence Japanese civilization?Presentation: You may focus on geography, political system, technology, society…for example. GuidelinesThe Court is also open to ideas from their loyal subjects! Remember that the Middle Ages lasted from about 400 A.D. (C.E.) until 1500 A.D. (C.E.) Your information should span this time period, unless it can be narrowed down more (i.e.- The Crusades).The TaskWorking in pairs or individually, each group will select what they would like to research. Upon having your topic approved, you/and your partner will write down four questions or areas of interest about your topic (that you want to know more about (AKA: Inquiry Questions). After doing this, you will research your subject and begin the process of gathering your information.1. Each group should have a group a leader. They are responsible for keeping the artisans, journeymen, minor nobles, monastics, etc. organized. They should not have to deal with behavior befitting a serf! 2. Groups will need to supply their own poster board if you need it. Many of you will be using multimedia and your blogfolio for this. Groups also needs to supply their own arts supplies. I have some crayons, colored pencils and markers, but I highly recommend bringing additional “tools” to complete your tasks in class. You will have access to the laptops and plenty of books in class. A participation mark will be given each class in order for you to feel the presence of the monarch watching over you!!! Remember no one should find themselves in the Royal Courts! 3. All of these projects require some basic research and effective communication. Put forth your best effort and use your time wisely. Your group is counting on you to be an engaged and active learner and participant.4. You will have days in the Library/class to complete your research. Your display must showcase your learning in a unique and creative way. How you decide to display it is up to you.
