CREATE A CELL-TASTIC THEME PARK THAT’S FILLED WITH …

CELL PROJECT

CREATE A CELL-TASTIC THEME PARK THAT’S FILLED WITH RIDES AND ATTRACTIONS!!!

Objectives:

• Students will be able to produce a brochure that describes a plant or animal cell as if it were a large exhibit or amusement park.

• Students will be able to develop cell organelle analogies that incorporate structure and function of the organelle while modeling an exhibit site.

• Students will be able to apply their creative skills, be it on the computer or artistically, in the development of their brochure.

Background Information:

Your task is to produce a travel brochure using the computer or by hand. Your project will describe a new amusement park or exhibit in the area. Your job will be to attract visitors and to make money! Here’s the catch, your exhibit or park must be centered on the structure of a plant or animal cell. Your attractions and rides must function similarly to the cell parts. The theme of your parks or exhibits will be a trip through the cell organelles. Entrances, rides, food stands, help desks will all be cell parts!

An example from a brochure could be, “Hungry? Stop by our plastid food stands and fill up on some starchy French fries! Yummy!”

Plastids store starches in plant cells just like the food stand will store starchy delights for park customers so the analogy makes sense AND describes the cell park correctly.

Humor and creativity are encouraged so get your thinking caps on and have fun!!!

Procedures:

1. You must complete a chart indicating which organelles you will be choosing and how you will represent them in your project (included in packet). You must describe what the part is in your park/exhibit and HOW it compares to what the organelle actually does in a real cell. This chart MUST be clipped to your final project.

2. You should include an introduction on the front of your brochure describing the new exhibit. Include a slogan or tag line for your new park.

3. Within your brochure there should be titles and descriptions as you tour throughout the exhibit. Each picture included or drawn must have a caption with it.

4. Additions to your brochure such as pricing, contact information, menus, quotes from satisfied customers etc. are always welcome and should be included on your back panel.
