Directions: Choose one of four immigration eras and create a presentation that deals with each of the subtopics within that era. Each of the subtopics can be applied to the four eras. You may use PowerPoint, a podcast, the internet website prezi, or another preapproved form of technology to create your presentation. Make sure that you cover all of the key bullet points from the directions.

Eras of Immigration in the United States

1. The First Wave of Immigration (Old Immigration) Colonial Times – Early 1800

2. The Second Wave of Immigration 1820s-1870s

3. The Third Wave of Immigration 1880s-1940s

4. The Fourth Wave of Immigration 1940s to Present

Subtopics

• Legislation and Laws related to Immigration / Reasons for creating the laws

• Cultural Assimilation of Immigrants

• The Economic Effects of Immigration / Jobs / Wages / cheap labor

• Effects of Immigration on Social Issues (Education, Healthcare, Social Services)

• Racism and Discrimination related to Immigration

• Crime and Corruption related to Immigration

Checklist for the Presentations

The presentations should include everything from the following checklist:

• Relevant Contextual information on your topic (What other influential events were going on in the United States at the time of your topic?) Ex. Civil War acted as the backdrop for Gangs of New York.

• Explanation / Identification of the key terms, events, and people related to your topic.

• Causes- important events contributing to an increase in immigrants from particular countries in your assigned topic. Reasons for American reaction to these new immigrant groups.

• Effects- How did this topic affect the United States?

• Connections to Current Events- How is your topic related to the current discussion on immigration?

• Works Cited Page
