In what year does Reconstruction end? 1877

Explain why Reconstruction ends: It ends when U.S. Federal troops leave the southern military districts. When the U.S. and the North is no longer willing to enforce the Reconstruction laws in the south.

Carpetbagger: Northerners who moved south during reconstruction for opportunity. Moved there to take advantage of the poor economic situation in the south. Many became involved in politics of the south as well. Southerners saw them as “damn Yankees not to be trusted.”

Freedman’s Bureau: Government agency created during Reconstruction to aid and help freed slaves.

Sharecropping: Many freed slaves were left with no other choice than to become sharecroppers because they were uneducated and had no money. Landowners allowed tenants to use the land in return for a share or percentage (usually 50%) of the crops harvested. Many end up in poverty.
