Battle of Wertingen October 8, 1805

Marshals Murat & Lannes vs. FML Auffenberg

Start time: The French have marched through the outskirts of Wertingen by late morning. At 1200 hours their cannon opened fire upon the Austrians defending behind Wertingen on the open hill plateau. French have 1st movement on the tabletop.

End time: When the last Austrian unit on tabletop has marched off or been destroyed, or nightfall at end of 1840 hours turn.

Starting MFP level: French have used 31 MFP (157 total) during the morning hours of marching and light skirmish actions. Austrians have used 9 MFP (34 total) while resting in Wertingen then marching out to their defensive hill position.

Special scenario rules: French Imperial & Austrian National characteristic rules plus the following scenario specific special or common rule highlights.

Austrian & French Ammo supply: Both sides have no ready ammo train in the area so the artillery batteries have no reserve of artillery ammo and the close order infantry battalions, when firing, rolls 6D. If “1” rolled, the unit is low on ammo for remainder of game and place “low on ammo” marker adjacent to unit. Regimental (battalion) cannon ammunition supply based upon the actual status battalion of infantry currently attached to.

Austrian restrictive retrograde movement: Till French infantry units are seen in adjutant scenario map square to any formed Austrian unit and not behind the hill slope woods out of sight, Austrian battalion infantry cannot retire or retrograde move towards their exit point while under a French cavalry charge zone template expanded out to 18”. The 18” charge range reflects the normal charge zone distance plus six inches of extended charge for this special scenario movement restriction rule. Austrian battalions and cavalry may always advance towards any distant French unit or move sideways, keeping true from actual retrograde movement. So if French cavalry rides behind the Austrian front line, the Austrians can “advance” towards that French unit and perform retrograde movement. This rule reflects that FML Auffenberg wasn’t going to retreat till nightfall vs. the French cavalry charges but changed his mind once arriving French infantry was reported.

Austrian Open Terrain Tactics in 1805: Several nations avoided the placement of their close order infantry formations within woods, swamp, marsh, or built up areas (large villages, towns etc.). To reflect this thought, the CMR of all close order infantry unit(s) undergoing a receiving shock combat morale check within woods, swamp, march or built up areas suffer a -2 CMR modifier if positioned in such terrain. Any terrain morale benefit adjustments are still applies for the defending unit.

a. Positioned in means the unit receives the terrain benefit.

b. Woods are medium or heavy. Lightwoods cause no CMR adjustment.

c. Large village or town is 3+ buildings within 6” radius of each other.

d. Units capable of open order formations omit this rule.

Austrian Regimental artillery: Several of the Austrian battalions or regiments have attached battalion cannon. See the Regimental artillery rules for use.

Austrian battalion masse rule: During 1805 campaign the Austrian army didn’t use the battalion masse square like formation in German theater of operation. Only standard square formations used.

Austrian Firing line tactics: Austrian infantry follow the Firing line tactics rules.

Austrian Improvised Unit Skirmishing: When the French deployed their massed skirmisher formations during the early French Republican wars, the allied armies suffered with their close order infantry formations, especially when confronted by skirmishers in terrain. Several armies developed individual unit tactics of deploying soldiers from the unit’s third rank while others created novel firing methods to engage these skirmishers with sectional platoon firing. Some just deployed a random infantry company platoon to chase away the French skirmishers. Whatever method was used, these methods evolved into the creation of internal battalion light companies for most nations or formalized deployment of the third rank as skirmishers.

Infantry battalions without internal light companies miniatures or the ability to use Third Rank skirmishing rule may utilize the Improvised Unit Skirmishing rule.

Requirements:

a. The unit may not have moved. Changing formation or facing is permitted.

b. An enemy skirmisher formation must be deployed within 12” of the unit electing to deploy improvised unit skirmishers.

c. If the parent battalion moves (not just a formation or facing change), the skirmishers must rejoin the parent formation and cannot be redeployed that turn. Basically, this forces these units to be generally stationary while the skirmishers are deployed. If during movement phase, if both ends of the unit formation change position (i.e. move) after facing & formation is completed, then the unit has moved causing the skirmishers to rejoin their parent unit.

d. Like the Third rank skirmishing rule, the selected infantry unit may deploy 1 skirmisher miniature per infantry unit (2 if the unit is over 6 miniatures in size). These skirmishers follow all open order formation restrictions.

e. Only infantry formations may use Improvised Unit skirmishing.

f. No militia morale grade units. Must be CMR 5 or higher.

Terrain notes: Hill slopes are gentle except for the marked steep hill slope area. Steep hill slope costs 2” for infantry in close order formation (plus woods costs too). Open order formations are unaffected. No cavalry or artillery on steep hill slope. Buildings are class II rated. Secondary road can handle normal road march column movement (2 miniatures wide infantry formation, single cavalry column formation, double length artillery battery spacing). Aulfach stream costs only 2” to cross and not terrain disordering. All woods are rated medium density.

Notes: French 3rd Dragoon Cavalry, 5th Corps Light cavalry markers and small artillery command representing the French horse artillery batteries (2). French reinforcements positioned at scenario map entrance points. Austrian command on hill position with cavalry in rear. Colored initial order chits placed under each command.

Weather: Cold and cloudy with light rain threatening. Weather Chart # 4 at scenario start then Chart# 5 at battle commencement.

Starting positions and Orders (LOC): All French are acting under “Advance position” senior order so no defend orders are allowed. Austrians are under “Hold position” senior order so no attack orders. Both sides have all their tabletop commands in battle mode with the initial order detailed below. French arriving commands are in strategic march mode except 1st Dragoon division, which has battle mode Attack order. All French and Austrian units set up in the rear half of each map square per normal miniature tabletop deployment rules. Definition of command orders covered at Wargamerabbit.

French:

At scenario start, all the French cavalry commands are under Marshal Murat’s ADC chef d’escadron Exelmans. He is played as an extra “divisional commander” who can give a +1 CMR bonus to any cavalry unit, for morale and shock combat, till Marshal Murat arrives on the tabletop (turn 1600 hours). Upon Murat’s arrival, ADC Exelmans is removed from game at no loss to French MFP.

5th Corps HQ (Lannes) w/o 12lb Enter C1 on 1600 turn

Grenadier Reserve (Oudinot) + 12lb Enter A1 on 1600 turn in Strategic road mode March order followed by 12lb battery

Austrian:

Auffenberg column (Auffenberg) B3 C3 and D3 with Engage orders**

Auffenberg cavalry regiments (2) C4

Notes:

* The two French horse artillery half batteries from 3rd Dragoon Division and 5th Light Cavalry Brigade.

** Deploy IR #55 (3 fusilier and one grenadier battalion) plus one additional grenadier battalion, in first line and evenly spaced across the hill slope map squares position, Form a second line of four grenadier battalion behind the first line, again evenly spread out. All battalions start in square formation as French have 1st move.

Off map reinforcements: No Austrian reinforcements during scenario. French reinforcements arrive at the following schedule and scenario map square. Note that Oudinot’s Grenadier Reserve division is in strategic road march mode.

1400 hours: French 1st Dragoon division (Klein) at E1.

1600 hours: French 1st Heavy Cavalry division (Nansouty) at D1.

1600 hours: Murat Reserve Cavalry Corps headquarters at D1.

1600 hours: 5th Corps headquarters (Lannes) at C1 without its 12lb positional battery.

1600 hours: Grenadier Reserve division (Oudinot) at A1 followed by 5th Corps 12lb battery. This command is in road march column formation (2 miniature wide column) when they enter the scenario tabletop.

Line of communications (LOC): French LOC exits on roads exiting the NE map edge. Murat’s Reserve cavalry commands via the Wertingen D1 road exit, Lannes’ infantry and cavalry commands via A1. Austrian LOC isn’t in play since their forces are divisional or lower in command scope. The Austrian player can only exit his units along the southern corner edge of map squares D6 or E6. Units that leave the tabletop other then mentioned exit points are considered destroyed for scenario victory conditions.

* Note: FML Auffenberg starts scenario with Engage order. He has only one free order change during the scenario battle since his superior commander is back in Ulm.

WR used a rough 1:100 miniature scale for this order of battle. (2x6) = 2 battalions of 6 infantry miniatures each. French cavalry are regiments. (3) for artillery equals 3 cannon in battery. The French horse batteries are half sized battery units.

Victory conditions:

Reduce the French victory level by one (towards a draw result) if the 1st Heavy Cavalry division changes out of strategic march mode during the scenario. Historically they were never engaged during the battle.

If any French cavalry division suffers 60%+ loss, adjust victory level downwards one level for French victory determination.

The Austrian player can only exit his units along the southwest corner edge of map squares D6 or E6. Units that leave the tabletop other then mentioned exit points are considered destroyed for scenario victory conditions

French Major Victory: Sweep the entire Austrian Auffenberg column from the battlefield with 60% or greater command loss. Isolated Austrian battalions cannot prevent two or more French cavalry divisions (all available regiments excluding their attached horse artillery) from exiting from any point on the SW table edge by 1840 hours turn scenario turn. (Historical result)

French Minor Victory: Push the Austrian Auffenberg column from the battlefield with 40% but less than 60% loss, before the scenario end on 1840 hours turn. Isolated Austrian battalions cannot prevent two or more French cavalry divisions (all available regiments excluding their attached horse artillery) from exiting from any point on the SW tabletop edge by 1840 hours turn.

Austrian Minor Victory: Austrian Auffenberg column still remains on tabletop at scenario end and under 60% command loss. French choose not to or cannot exit their two French cavalry command (all available regiments excluding their attached artillery) off the SW tabletop edge by 1840 hours turn.

Austrian Major Victory: Austrian Auffenberg column still remains on tabletop, under 40% command loss and no French cavalry command exits (all available regiments excluding their attached artillery) off the SW tabletop edge by 1840 hours turn.
