This book is dedicated to Mrs. Raymond F. (Mildred) Heiden of Crystal Lake, Illinois who has been so generous as to share her pictures of Wachenbuchen and Oberdorfelden, West Germany. She has, also helped me understand the structure of the German towns and counties. At the time my original book was put together, I could not find a map that showed either of the above towns, BUT AT THE FINAL PRINTING she located one and relayed it to me. Much thanks for all your Help.

Editor’s Note,
Every effort has been made to replicate Betty’s book as close to the original as possible. There were some restrictions or mistakes in the original work that I chose to correct. Any additions by me are in italic and are my responsibility.
Great effort was made by Betty to place as much information as possible on a page. Many pages had margins of ¼” to ½” with little or no paragraph breaks. This accomplished her suspected goal, but made the manuscript extremely difficult to read.
She also retained much or all of the original mistakes in spelling and grammar while adding a few of her own. Many of the legal documents contained lengthy run-on sentences. These were not only impossible to understand, but in a lot of instances, the initial reading created a different impression than was received after a second or third examination.
I therefore chose to make the following changes to open up the layout and make the book more inviting to read, as well as to clarify some of the information it contains.
1. Increased the margin size, added paragraph and page breaks between sections. This increased the number of pages in the book, but made it much easier to read.
2. Redesigned the Table of Contents to conform to the new layout and increased the detail to make specific parts easier to find.
3. Added footnotes to explain the definitions of words not commonly used today or to give insight to the time period or situations.
4. Inserted obvious words that were left out or were apparent omissions by the original author.
5. Punctuation was added, especially to lengthy legal documents, to clarify the intent of the authors.
6. Added an index of names to allow researchers to find their specific ancestors.
I have tried very hard to ensure that these changes have not destroyed the intent of the book. I have never supposed to profit from Betty Lou Mefford’s work or glory. She, along with the others she acknowledged, did the research for this volume of work as well as all the original layout and publication.
As an Editor, I have only tried create a more reader friendly work and make the information available to as many people as possible, using tools and opportunities not available to Betty in 1985, namely word processors and the Internet.
This work should not be sold. It is to be distributed freely as a family history research tool.

NASSAU, now in Hessen; former duchy and Grafschaft. Associated territories were Usingen, Weilburg, Saarbruken. Members of the Wetterauische Grafenkolleg. Territories became Calvinist (Reformed) during the Reformation. The reigning house is usually referred to as the house of Orange, the royal family of the Netherlands. Their possessions in Germany were divided among five lines of the dynasty but were again merged in 1743. Fulda, Corvey, and Weingarten were associated for a time. One branch of the family also owned Grafschaft Saarbruken (to 1723), Ottweiler (to 1728), Idstein (to 1721), Usingen (to 1816), and Weilburg (to 1912). Diez, Dillenburg, and Hadamer were exchanged with Prussia in 1815. In 1866 Nassau became Prussian territory.

HESSEN-NASSAU, now in the state of Hessen; former Prussian province. Territory was a Prussian province from 1768 to 1944; included territories taken from Hessen-Kassel and Hessen-Darmstadt in 1866, Duchy of Nassau, Hessen-Homburg. The former Bavarian Bezirke Gersfeld and or, districts of Biedenkopf and Vohl (formerly in Hessen-Darmstadt), and the city of Frankfurt/Main. In 1929 Waldeck was added; in 1932 Kreis Wetzlar was added, and Kreis Rinteln (Grafschaft Schaumburg) was merged with Hannover. The political entity called Hessen-Nassau, a modern creation, has otherwise no history of its own and was not one of the former imperial designations.

FRANKFURT/MAIN, now in Hessen: formerly Reichsstrodt member of the protestant corpes at the peace of Westphalia; city is now 56% Protestant; the cathedral remained Catholic even after most of the town’s populace became Protestant; a great many Dutch and Walloon refugees of the Reformed Church were given refuge in Frankfurt. Because the cathedral remained Catholic, it continued to be the site of the election and crowning of the German Kaiser. From 1806 to 1813 the city was the capitol of Rheinbund, and in 1810 capital of a Grandduchy of Frankfurt, which included Hanau, Fulda, Wetzlar, and Aschaffenburg. Annexed by Prussia in 1866.
SOCIAL DISTICTION
There were three major classes of society in early Germany:
(In addition there were Jews. They were subjected to special restrictions)
1. NOBILITY, distinguished by VON or ZU before the name.
2. BURGHERS, dwelled in cities and towns. Pursued commerce, trade and handicrafts. Not allowed to own lands reserved to noblemen.
A. PATRICIAN ELITES, ones who governed the imperial free cities and who were rentiers.
B. ENTREPRENEURS and TRADERS, professors, lawyers, doctors and clerics.
3. PEASANTS, all persons engaged in agriculture.
A. FREEMEN
B. SERFS, West Germany often only had to pay rent for the lands. East Germany required to render personal services to their lords and ownership of chattel property was limited.
PFALZ (PALATINATE) COUNTY, GERMANY
The earliest recorded Meffert in Germany is found in Pfalz county. In German the word Pfalz means Palatinate. At present, this county is called Rheinland-Pfalz and is located west-southwest of Hessen County where our immigrant ancestors lived.
In 1615, Friedrich Meffard was married in Pfalz County, Germany. He lived in the town of Barbelroth which I cannot locate on the map.
The next records jumps to 1725 where the marriage of Andreas Meffart and Ann Maria Arnolds is recorded. Andreas lived in the town of Annweiler. Annweiler is near the French border. This does seem consistent with the statement of Jacob Mefford (Campbell County, Kentucky) in his Revolutionary War pension records THAT WE MEFFORDS WERE DESCENDED FROM THE FRENCH. It is highly possible that this section of Germany belong to France at one time or perhaps our earlier ancestors were born in France and moved across the border into Germany.
In 1746, Simon Mefferd recorded the birth of his daughter, Ann Maria. He was living in the town of Becherback. In 1777, Anna Maria was still living in this town when she married Michael Mathis.
There were Mefferts living in Pfalz County as late as 1791. These Mefferts were found in Pirmasens, a town very near Annweiler.
HESSEN COUNTY, GERMANY
Hessen County is our prime interest since most of the immigrant ancestors grew from childhood to adulthood in the Duchy of Nassau which is now Hessen County. Hessen County is the land of the Reinhardwald Forrest which surrounds the Weser River. These dark foreboding forests with their ancient castles were used by the Grims brothers – Jacob and Wilhelm in their famous fairy tales. Two of which are “The Sleeping Beauty” (Sababurg Castle) and “Little Red Riding Hood”. The Grimm’s brothers were born in Hanau, on the Maine River near Wachenbuchen where our ancestors were born and reared. They spent their lives as civil servants of Kassel collecting the local legends and folk tales of Hessen County and in turn converted them into their fabulous fair tales that most of us loved as children and we, who remain children at heart still do! Perhaps, our ancestors were acquainted with these two great authors.
Another famous town of Hessen County is Hamelin, in the northern part. Hamelin was made world renown by James Howell when he heard Browning tell his tale of “the Pied Piper” . Howell believed the tale and published it in his “Familiar Letters of 1643.”
Neither Wachenbuchen or Oberdorfelden are on the current maps of Germany since they are so small, but Mrs. Mildred Heiden, in 1971, visited both towns and she has been so kind as to send me pictures of both towns.
The earliest record of our Mefferts in Hessen County was the birth of Ann Eva Meffert, daughter of Friedrich and Catharina ( ) Meffert, on 28 Oct. 1658.
The next record was the marriage of Hans Heinrich Meffert and Ann Margareth Emmel, 25 Nov. 1659. It has not been proved but in all probability Friedrich and Hans Heinrich were brothers.

Let me explain why you cannot find Wachenbuchen or Oberdorfelden on any map. They are smaller than villages, and are not even placed on road maps. The Germans call these places “Orts”, again meaning places or spots. An Ort, is generally a group of farm houses where the only activity takes place in the morning when the farmer heads out to his fields to begin his work. The same activity would be repeated when the farmer returns home in the evening.
Oberdorfelden, in 1971, was just such an “Ort.” We spent very little time walking up and down the two or three short streets. Wachenbuchen, on the other hand, was beginning to develop, as you can see by the new apartment building and school. Perhaps by this time, it may even show up on a road map as a very small village. However, I do not have a current road map to share with you.
As I recall, both “Orts” were fairly close together. We left Frankfurt on Sunday morning, heading north, and found our first stop in just a little over an hour.
I was sorry the Rathauses in both Orts were closed, because I would have liked to have asked a few questions, providing I found someone who could speak English. However, our time was limited so we continued north. I was truly pleased to have found Wachenbuchen and Oberdorfelden, since this was our second attempt. During Christmas 1968 we had tried to locate Oberdorfelden. We were celebrating the holidays in Nurnberg, which is near Rothenberg, which in return, was the vicinity where Marguerite Robinson had placed Oberdorfelden. While in Rothenberg we received a parking ticket. We didn’t realize visitors were not allowed to park within the walled city. At the police station (we did not have to pay a fine, as he ticket was only a warning) everyone tried to locate Oberdorfelden on the large wall map. No luck.
Your offer to make copies of the information you have on Casper is greatly appreciated. Your work sounds so thorough and complete, I am most anxious to receive all you can send, including the German records and the book you will soon be publishing. Be sure to include your costs, etc. , because I know that dabbling in genealogy can be expensive.

Ortspartie is broken down this way.
Ort means place or spot. Partie means parcel of land or lot.
Thus, spots or place of land.
Kirchpartie is broken down the same way;
Kirch means church. Parti means parcel of land or lot.
In this case it is probably loosely translated into the word “area”. Thus, church area.
Mittelpunktschule means intermediate central school.

PART II
THE JOURNEY
Can one imagine the excitement and perhaps the fear when the day, in all probability in May, finally arrived for our immigrant ancestors to embark on the long trek to the fabled land of promise, heartbreak and FREEDOM.
The first stage of the journey, the boats of the Rhine river from Heilbronn to Rotterdam. Because of 26 custom Houses and intentional delays to induce their passengers to spend much of their money, this journey took from four to six weeks. Once in Rotterdam, and additional delay of five to six weeks, where necessities were very costly and again they were induced to spend more than most could afford.
The second stage began when the immigrant and his family stepped on board the ship in Rotterdam. This second leg of the journey took our ancestors to England, in all probability Cowes, England.
The third and hardest stage of the journey began when the Captain of their chosen ship weighed anchor for the final time and ALL TIES WITH THE FATHERLAND were forever severed. A wait of one to two weeks had just been undergone, clearing the customs and waiting for favorable winds. Perhaps, our ancestors were lucky and their captain was a good captain and provided decent food and clean drinking water, or perhaps he was not, we shall never know. At best, the journey across the Atlantic must have been extremely difficult for these lovers of the land. There were bound to be gales and heat to add to their misery of close quarters and sea sickness.
On a day, probably in September or October, our ancestors finally arrived in Pennsylvania. There they were required to remain aboard the ship until the captain could arrange for them to be cleared for landing. Then the males sixteen years of age and older were marched down the streets of Philadelphia where they were administered the OATH OF ALLEGIENCE TO THE KING OF GREAT BRITTAIN. If our ancestors had paid their way, then they were free to start their new lives in a brand new country. If they had been unable to pay their fare then they were required to act as servants to pay the Captain for his passage.

• Double SS and FF are written the same in German. They must have been confused by the different transcribers of the three records.
I strongly suspect that Johann Peter Meffert is the SON of Egidius Candias Meffert as opposed the thinking of Anita Ockert’s record. My reasons are given under Johann Peter’s section.
Egidius Candias Meffert was born 21 April 1701, Duchy of Nassau, Wachenbuchen Parish, Hessen County, Prussia (Germany), the son of Johann and Margareth (Hesse) Meffert.
In the year 1748 Aegidius Meffert applied for permission to immigrate to Pennsylvania:

JOHANN PETER MEFFERT
I believe that there were two separate Peter Mefferts in the early years. The first being the original Johann Peter Meffert who immigrated to Pennsylvania with Aegidius Meffert. I think that he was the son of Aegidius as opposed to being his brother, as Anita Ochkert and Margarethe Robinson seem to think. If he had been the brother then he would have had to apply for permission to leave Germany. Being a son and probably underage at the time of immigration he would not have had to have permission to leave.
The first and only records of this original Johann Peter Meffert is as follows:

The letter of Administration is on the following page. I located this about four years ago and I assumed that there was NOT A WILL but the above abstract proves that there was. As you will note the Letter of Administration was dated with the same date as the will abstract.
THE ESTATE WAS NOT SETTLED UNTIL JOHN ABRAHAM MEFFERT, THE ONLY SON, BECAME OF AGE. The actual settlement was in Orphans Court, 10 Mach, 1789.

Mrs. Phylis Mefford has quested why there was a will BUT the estate was settled INTESTATE. She has suggested that the above was not the will of Peter Meffert BUT IF THIS WAS TURE THEN WHY WAS:
“Admn. To Ann Mary Meffert, THE WIDOW”
The only suggestion that I have is that the will WAS NOT ACCEPTED AS VALID. And as from the following pages one can readily see that the estate was not settled until 1789, 11 years later.

Register Henry Christ for the Probate of Wills, and granting letters of Administration in and for the County of Berks in the state of Pennsylvania to ANN MARY MEFFERT, widow and relict of PETER MEFFERT, late of township Douglas in the county of Berks, yeomen, deceased. Whereas the said Peter Meffert…lately died INTESTATE[3] (as is affirmed) having whilst he lived, and at the time of his death, divers goods, chattels, rights and credits, within the said county by means whereof, the dull disposition and power of granting the administration of all and singular the goods, chattels, rights and credits, which were of the said deceased within the said county and also the auditing of the accounts, calculations and reckonings of the said administration and a final submission from the same to me is manifestly known to belong; I, desiring that the goods, rights and credits of the said deceased, may be well and truly administered, do hereby grant unto you, the said Ann Mary Meffert…in whose fidelity in this behalf I very much confide, full power by the tenor of these present, to administer the goods, right and credits, which were of the said deceased, within the said county; and also to ask, collect, levy, recover and receive the credits whatsoever of the said deceased, which at the time of his death, were owing, or to him did any way belong, and to pay the debts, in which the said decedent stood obligated, so far forth as the said goods, chattels, rights and credits will extend according their rate and order of law, especially of well and truly administering the goods, rights and credits of the said deceased, and making a true and perfect inventory thereof, and exhibiting the same into the register office at the town of Reading, in the county of Berks, at or before the 13 day of February next, and rendering a true and just account, calculation, or reckoning, of the said administration, at or before the 13 day of January in the year of our lord 1779. And also I do by these presents ordain, constitute and appoint you, the said Anna Mary Meffert…administrate of all and singular the goods, chattels, rights and credits, which were of the said deceased, within the limits aforesaid, saving harmless, and for ever indemnifying me, and all other officers, against all persons whatsoever by reason of your administration aforesaid, and saying to all other their rights. Upon the petition of JOHN MEFFERT, only son and heir at law of Peter Meffert, late of Douglas Township, in the said county, yeoman deceased. Setting forth that the petitioners’ said father lately died intestate, leaving widow to wit:
Anna Maria (since intermarried with Valentine Fisher), and five children.
To wit: The petitioner, POLLY, the wife of John Fistor, ELIZABETH, the wife of Adam Miller, CATHARINE and MAGDALENA, of whom, except the said Catherine and Magdalene, are in their minorities. And that the said intestate died, seized of a certain mepuage or firment and tract of lands of John Romick, Jocob Kechly, Valentine Fisher and others containing 225 acres or thereabouts, be the same, more or less, with appurtenances.
Therefor, praying the court to award an inquest to make partition of the premises to, and among the parties above named, in such a manner and in such proportion, as by the … of this as is directed and appointed of such partion, can be made with prejudice to or spoiling the whole therof, but if such partition cannot be thereof made as aforesaid, then to value and appraise the same and make return of valuation to (t)his court, in order that your petitioner may take the said estate upon paying or securing, to be paid to the other children of the said intestate their several shares therein, according to such valuation, agreeable to the Act of General Assembly in such case made and provided.
The court, hereby award and inquest to make partion of the premises in the said petition mentioned-wherof, Peter Meffert, the intestate, in the said petition named, died…seized, to and among the children and representative of the said intestate, in such a manner and in such proportion as the law of this commonwealth is directed appointed. If such partition can be made without prejudice to or spoiling the whole thereof, otherwise to value and appraise the same. And it is further ordered by the court, that a writ be issued to the sheriff commanding him to summon an inquest for the purpose aforesaid. And the same was issued accordingly returnable here the 2nd Tuesday in March, next.

Jacob Bower, High Sheriff of the count of Berks, made return of a writ to him directed lately awarded and issued out of the Orphan’s Court of this county, commanding him to summon an inquest to make partion of a certain mepuage or tenement plantation and tract of land situated in Douglas township in the said county, adjoining land of John Romich, Jocob Keely, Valentine Fisher and others, containing 226 acres or thereabouts be the same more or less with the appurtences whereof—Peter Meffert, the intestate in the said writ named, died, seized to and among the children and representatives of the said intestate, in such a manner and in such proportion as by the laws of this commonwealth is directed and appointed, if such a partition can be made without prejudice to or spoiling the wholethereof, otherwise to value and appraise the same to which return endorsed the said writ in the words following.
To Wit: To the justices within named, I do hereby certify that by value of the within writ to me directed, I have taken with me 12 honest and lawful men of my bailwick and went to the meguage or tenement and tract of land and all and singular the premises within mentioned, do whereof, Peter Meffert, the intestate in the within writ named, died, seized and on their oath and solemn affirmation respectively, finding that the same could not be parted and divided to and among the parties as within writ I am commanded. By virtue of a writ from the Orphans Court, to me directed and to this inquisition annexed by the Oath of Jacob Roads, Jacob Kline, Sammuel Boyer, Engle Shreader, Adam Betz, Michael Ludwig, Ludwig Morman, John Weider, John Schoch, William Witman, George Nagle and Solomn Affirmation of John Guldin, 12 honest and lawful men of the said county upon their Oath and solemn affirmation aforesaid respectively, do say that they went to the Real Estate or lands and tenements in the said writ mentioned, whereof, Peter Meffert, in the said writ mentioned, died, seized, and there did find that the same could not be parted and divided to and among the parties in the said writ named, without prejudices to or spoiling the whole thereof. Which return and inquisition being read and heard are confirmed by the Court here and its’ consideration adjudged by the Court, that John Meffert, only son and heir at law of Peter Meffert, the intestate in the said writ named, upon paying or securing to be paid to the other children and representative of the said intestate, their respective shares and dividends of and in the said 975 pounds, reserving unto ANNA MARIA, THE NOW WIFE OF VALENTINE FISHER, HER DOWER THEREIN. To Whit: 2/3 parts thereof in 12 months from this day and the residue immediately after the death of the said Anna Maria. Shall hold and enjoy the Real Estate aforesaid, whereof his father, the said Peter Meffert, died, seized intestate with the appurtances valued as aforesaid to him, John Meffert, his heirs and assigns, forever according to the Act of General Assembly of this Commonwealth, in such case made and provided and the said John Meffert, tendering to the court. Elias Ralge (and) Gothich Christine as sureties, to enter into bonds with him for the payment of the shares and dividends of the other children of the said Intestate, of and in the valuation monies aforesaid.

This indenture made 11th day of May, Ad 1790 between JOHN MEFFERT of the borough of READING IN THE COUNTY OF BERKS AND THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA. John Meffert and SARAH his wife on the one part and Valentine Fisher of Douglas twp. (township) County and state aforesaid yeomen[4] of the other part.
Whereas Peter Meffert, (father of the said John Meffert late of Douglas Twp.) In the county of Berks and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, aforesaid yeoman, deceased. By virtue of Sundry conveyances and assurances in law duly had executed because in his lifetime lawfully seized and probated in his demean as of the land in a certain mesonage and here revealed tracts of land situate continuous to each other in the twp. of Douglas aforesaid. The one of them containing 105 acres and allowance of Jos. J. Gert for Roads Co., the other of them containing 45 acres and allowances as aforesaid and the third of them containing 50 acres and allowance as aforesaid, but upon survey the whole was laid of in one entire tract and found to contain 202 acres and 133 perches and allowance aforesaid, and being so thereof seized, and--- as aforesaid, died intestate, leaving a widow to wit, ANNA MARIA, since intermarried with Vallentine Fisher and these 5 children to wit:

And whereas the John Meffert the eldest son of the said Peter Meffert, deceased aforesaid, preferred a petition on the 3rd day of January, AD 1789, to the Justice of the Orphan’s Court for the county of Berks aforesaid, praying the said court award an inquest to part and divide the said estate, awarding the said children of the same can be done without spoiling the whole land. If the same cannot be done without prejudice to a spoiling the whole, then, further praying the said court to order the said inquest to value and appraise the same, according to the directions of the Acts of General Assembly of the state of Pennsylvania, was in said case made and provided, and the said court have, thereupon awarded an inquest to the purpose aforesaid, and whereas said court also issued thereupon, a writ of partitions or valuation directed to the sheriff of said county, commanding him to take 12 honest and lawful men of his bailiwicks and to go to the said messuasage or tenement and said piece or parcel of land, and thereby their Oath or solemnize affirmation in the presence of the parties of the messuages and tract of land, having respect to the true value, thereof to said, among the 6 parties to cause the same to be parted and divided if that partition can be made without spoiling the whole, and each of the children of the said intestate, their respective shares. Therein according to have, to hold, to them in---veralty to assign and deliver etc. But if the inquest can not make the said partition of the said messuage and tract of land, that the said inquest to value and appraise the said real estate, whereof the said Peter Meffert, died, seized, and that the partition or valuation made to be ---[5] said openly to have before the justice at Reading in the Orphan’s Court, were to be held the 10th day of March next, and whereas the said sheriff took with him 12 free and lawful men of the said county, in the said inquisition named, who upon their oath and solemn affirmation responding to say, that---to the real estate in the said writ mentioned. Said then and there, did find that the same would not be divided to and among the petitioners in the said writ named, without spoiling the whole whereof, and therefore they have valued and appraised the said real estate with the appurtances at said 175 pounds in gold and silver coin, now current in Pennsylvania, and judged to all monies and quit rents, if any now due, and hereafter to become due and payable for the same to the ---and appear by an inquisition to the said,---the said sheriff and under the court and --- and by the petition of the said sheriff in the – at the Orphan’s court held at Reading, in and for the county of Berks, the said day of March, Ad 1789. The said valuation was confirmed to remain---and—forever, and whereas also Elias Redge and Gottlie Christian were approved as Surities, to enter into bonds with the said John Meffert for payment of the shares and --- of the other children of the said intestate. -------- upon the sealing and delivery of said bonds of the said John Meffert, should hold and enjoy the real estate of this said father, valued as aforesaid, to him, his heirs and assigns forever, and whereas the said, John Meffert, Elias Redge and Gottlieb Christine, did on this 22nd day of August, AD 1789; sign, seal and deliver the said bonds for the payment of the --- dividends of the other children of the said deceased, according to law as by the proceedings of the said court may appear now (in) this indenture.
Witnessth that the said JOHN MEFFERT and SARAH, his wife, for and in consideration of the sum of 1,150 pound in specie, lawful money of Pennsylvania, to them in hand, well and truly paid by the said Vallentine Fisher, and before the sealing and delivery hereof, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, and the said Vallentine Fisher, his heirs, executors, administrators forever, aquitted and discharged by these present, have granted, bargained, sold and confirmed and by these present for, grant, bargain, sell , release and confirmed unto the said Valentine Fisher (in his actual presence) and occupation now being and to his heirs and assigns forever, all the above receipted tract or parcel of land as aforesaid mentioned, and limited as follows.

This indenture made the 3rd day of May in the year of our Lord, 1792, between Jacob Bower of the borough of Reading in Berks County in the State of Pennsylvania. Squire and Rebecca, his wife, of the one part and JOHN MEFFORD of the same place, TINNER and HOUSE CARPENTER, of the other part. Whereas the said, Jacob Bower, late the high Sherrif of the said county, by virtue and in punnance (sic) of a certain writ of banditioni exposas, (sic) issued out of Court of Common Pleas for the said county of Berks, later at Reading, the 15th day of February, in the year of our Lord, 1788, did by Deed Poll[7], states the 19th day of May, in the year last above mentioned, grant and confirm as the estate of John Dieht, deceased, unto Henry Christ, Esq. and Gottfried Becker, as tenants in common, and not as joint tenants, and to their heirs and assigns forever, a certain lot of ground situated in the borough of Reading aforesaid and marked in the general plan thereof, NB3, bounded westward by CALLOW HILL STREET, Southward by RICHARD STREET, eastward by a 20 foot alley and northward by a lot of ground marked in the plan aforesaid, NB3, as by the said written deed Poll and the words and proceedings of the said Common Pleas at large may appear.
And whereas the said Henry Christ and Gottfried Becher, by their assignments endomie (sic) in the above written Deed Poll, for the consideration therein mentioned, did grant and confirm unto the said, Jacob Bower and his heirs and assigns forever, all the 2 equal undivided 3rd parts of the above mentioned and described lot of ground, NB4, bounded westward by Callow Hill Street, aforesaid, northward by said Richard Street, eastward by a 20 feet alley and northward by the other 3rd part of the said lot of ground, NB4, granted unto Mathias Bibb, containing in breath on the front of said Callow Hill street, 40 feet and in depth or length 230 feet as in and by the said alignment, and or intended to be recorded in the office for the recording deeds at Reading aforesaid, situation being thereunto has at large may appear.
Now this indenture, witness that the said Jacob Bower and Rebecca, his wife, for and in consideration of the sum of 50 pounds in offuice (official) currant money of the state of Pennsylvania, unto them in hand, well and truly paid by the said John Mefford, at or before the ensealing and delivery hereof, the receipt whereof, they, the said Jacob Bower and Rebecca, his wife, do hereby acknowledge and thereof of do aquit and forever discharge the said, John Mefford, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, by these presents , have granted, bargained, sold, aliened, enscoffed, released and confirmed, and by them present to grant, bargain, sell alien, enscoff, release and confirm unto the said, John Mefford and his heirs and assigns, all that aforementioned and described, two equal, undivided 3rd parts of the said lot, NB4, signed and remitted as aforesaid, containing in front or breath on Callow Hill Street, aforesaid, 40 feet and in length or depth 230 feet together, also with allowed singular houses, ---- buildings, improvements, barns, stables, gardens, orchards, fences, --- alley, waters and watercourses, rights, easements, liberties, privileges, here did award said appurtances --- and thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining on the premises; and remainder rents, issues and said profits, thereof, and all the estate right, title, interest, property claim and demand whatsoever of the said, Jacob Bower and Rebecca his wife, and either of them in law or equity or otherwise however said to and of the same.
To have and to hold the said two equal, undivided 3rd parts of the said lot of ground, NB4, here mentioned, and premises hereby granted or mentioned or intended to be with the appurtances, unto the said, John Mefford, his heirs and assigns, to the only proper use and behoof of the said, John Mefford, his heirs and assigns, forever. Subject to the payment of the yearly ground or quit rents now due and hereafter --- intended or to become due and payable for the same unto the Chief Lord or Lords of the --- thereof, and the said, Jacob Bower, for him, his heirs, executors or administrators, doth covenant, promise, grant and agree to and with the said, John Mefford, his heirs and assigns, by these present, that he the said, Jacob Bower and his heirs, the said two equal, undivided 3rd part of the said lot of ground, NB4. On this nineteenth day of November, a.d. one thousand eight hundred and fifty ---, personally appeared before me, an alderman of the city of Reading within and for the county and State aforesaid, PETER MEFFERT, aged 61 years, a resident of Reading, Berks County in the State of Pennsylvania, who being duly sworn according to the law, declares that he is the identical PETER MEFFERT who was a corporal in the company commanded by Captain Thomas Moore, in the 2nd regiment of the Penna Militia, commanded by Lieut. Colonel John Sutz, in the war with Great Britain, declared by the United States on the 18th day of June, 1812; that he volunteered at Reading, Penna, on or about the 1st day of September, a.d. 1814, as will appear “I NEVER HAD A WRITTEN DISCHARGE. WE DELIVERED UP OUR ARMS TO YORK, PENNA AND THE COMPANY WAS DISCHARGED” or by the muster rolls of said Company.
He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the “act granting bounty land to certain officers and soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States,” passed September 28th, 1850. I DO HEREBY APPOINT DAVID MEDARY, MY AGENT TO ACT FOR ME IN THE PREVIOUS.

On this 4th day of April, a.d. one thousand eight hundred and fifty-five, personally appeared before me, an ALDERMAN OF THE CITY OF READING, within and for the County and State aforesaid, Peter Meffert, aged 65 years, a resident of Reading, Berks county in the State of Pennsylvania, who being duly sworn according to the law, declares that he is the identical Peter Meffert who was a Corporal in the company commanded by Captain Thomas Moore in the second regiment of Pennsylvania Militia, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel John Sutz, in the war with Great Britain, declared by the United Stated on the 18th day of June, 1812, for the term of 3 months and continued in actual service in said war for fourteen days; that he heretofore made application for bounty land under the Act of September 28, 1850, and received a land warrant for 40 acres which I sold and the number not recollected.
He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the additional bounty land to which he may be entitled under the Act approved the 3rd day of March, 1855. From the year 1753 to the year 1760 Andreas Meffert appears on the Tax List for Chester County, Pennsylvania. It is not certain where he lived from his time of immigration in 1749 but in all probability he remained with his cousin, Egidius Meffert in Philadelphia County.
When Andreas and Magdalene Meffert arrived in the United States they had three living children. There is a nine year span between the birth of the eldest son and their youngest son but NO OTHER CHILDREN HAVE BEEN FOUND FOR ANDREAS. Only the one daughter and two sons were named in Andrea’s will.

I, Andrew Meffort of Coventry Township, Chester County and province of Pennsylvania, yeoman, being through the abundant mercy of God thugh weak in body yet of a sound and perfect understanding and memory do constitute this my last will and testament and declare it may be received by all men as such…most honorably bequeath my soul to God, that gave it, beseeching him most grievous acceptance of it, through Jesus Christ, our Lord and mediator, and my body to the earth from whence it was taken, to be buried at the direction of my wife and children.
My worldly estate I will and positively order, that all my debts be honest discharged, then I will and positively order that all my personal estate be sole publicly, giving reasonable time (except one third which I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Margaret Dauber,) and I will and bequeath one third…of the price that the said personable estate may abound, too to my dear wife Madvelan (Magdalene?) to be the same more or less. Then I will positively over (order?) that the remainder of the personal estate be equally divided between my two sons, John and Casper, and I will and positively order my real estate to be sole (sold?) and profits be given for the same, in the same manner as I have had for the same, and that over..or as much as shall be spareing the same way equally in three parts and that my wife Madton (Magdalene?) shall receive the one third part for her own properity and my daughter Margret shall receive tenn pds. The first deed in Fredericks County, Maryland (Book H, page 273…1762 shows that John and his family removed to this county and state in 1762. There are seven deeds in total recorded for John in Fredericks County, Maryland.
The second deed (Book K, page 260…30 Oct 1765) shows that he was proud of his land as he called a 124-acre tract, MIFFORD’S DELIGHT. The land was purchased for 20 pounds and was located near Woodsboro, Fredericks County, Maryland.

Therefore, sometime around this date the family headed for Kentucky and settled in Scott County.
There is found in the land record the following land grant which I FIRMLY believe to be that of Johannes:

Casper immigrated with his father the 15 Sept. 1749 on the ship, Rainer. He was eight years old and did not have to sign any of the documents that were required of all males about the age sixteen.
He was naturalized as follows:

Casper Meffert
Casper’s marriage is recorded in Vol. 2-9223 page 322 in Philadelphia. The couple was married by Heinrich Muhlenberg, the noted Lutheran leader who led an entire congregation to battle in the Revolutionary War. Casper DID NOT serve in the Revolutionary War but his son, John acted as his substitute in the year that Cornwallis was taken in the spring. He also served as a Minute Man guarding prisoners. His pension application was filed 28 Dec 1840 but it was rejected as he did not serve enough time.
After Casper’s marriage in 1763 he removed to Fredericks County, Maryland but he never seemed to own land there so he probably lived with his brother. The first record of Casper in Fredericks County, Maryland is as follows:

On 22 Sept 1795 Casper’s land was surveyed and it showed that he had 225 acres on the SOUTH SIDE OF THE NORTH RIVER. In 1793 he purchased an additional 41 acres by Treasury Warrant Number 225.

As to my son, John Mefford, it is my wish for his son, George Meffort, to have his part that will be coming to him and all the rest of my children by name, Leancy Hannah to have an equal part except what she hath had with the black woman. As for Gasper, my son, he shall have one dollar. As for George, my son, he shall have an equal part except what he hath had. As for Benjamin, my son, he shall have equal part except what he hath had. As for Caty Kyle, my daughter, she shall have equal part with the black girl with what she hath had. It is my wish to Mr. George Hewston and Mr. John Hewston for executors. Do wish after my decease, I wish is for them to make a sale as there is more stock than wanting, and raise money and pay off the debts, whatever my wife wants must not be sold, and if there is more sold than will pay the debts, for my wife to have the money if she wants it.

We do know that John Jacob CAN NOT BE A SON OF ANDREAS but if he were the son of Aegidius Meffert then he would be Andreas’ nephew.

There is much confusion among this man’s descendants as to his place of birth. The proof that he was born in Germany and NOT ENGLAND as most of his descendants tend to believe is in the immigration records in Pennsylvania. IF HER WERE ENGLISH BORN THEN HE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO TAKE THE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE!!!
The first record, after immigration, that I found for George Conrad Meffert is as follows:

The fourth child of George Conrad and Anna Magdalena Meffert was John Mefford of Brown County, Ohio. There has been no record of his birth found as yet. I believe he was born in Antietum country in Maryland since he was born 19 April 1764 (tombstone). The following record tends to prove this:

“John Mefford, near Maysville, Kentucky, born in Maysville, Kentucky Dec 4, 1787, son of George and Malinda (Masters) Mefford, who was born while his parents were migrating from GERMANY, born on the ocean.
They settled first in Antietum in Maryland and then to the Red Stone country in Pennsylvania from which George went on Mac Intosh’s Campaign, on which he served as a hunter and soy. In west Pennsylvania, he married and has two children and moved to Kentucky in 1784 or 1785. One child was born in Maysville in 1785, NEXT OLDER THAN MY INFORMANT.”
There is a discrepancy in the above statement:
George Conrad Meffert did not settle first in Antietum (now Washington County), Maryland but rather spent a period of time in Pennsylvania. Perhaps the information that I located and recorded was not available to the researchers of this man’s history. His children were young and in all probability did not remember their stay in Pennsylvania. Red stone country is now Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

Another point to try to straighten out for his descendants is his father. Many believe that his father was either John Jacob Mefford or Andrew Conrad. THE PROOF OF HIS FATHER IS GIVEN UNDER GEORGE CONRAD MEFFORD, I. (See Family Group Sheets on pages 80 and 81.) I think enough proof has been given on both counts to clarify future researchers point of view.
There has been much written about this man and his descendants and can be located either in Mason County Historical Society or The Kentucky Historical Society. Also, a book entitled, GEORGE MEFFORD, PATRIOT (1764-1814) OF WASHINGTON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA AND MASON COUNTY, KENTUCKY by Mrs. Lula Red Boss, housed at The Filson Club, Inc. in Louisville, Kentucky.
George Mefford’s house which was built from the original flatboat that he used to come down the Ohio River to Mason County, Kentucky has been preserved and land marked by The Kentucky Historical Society.
He served in the Revolutionary War and many of his descendants belong to the Daughters or Sons of the American Revolution.
Not much more can be said that has not already been said for this man.

This man resided in West Virginia as it is now known, but at the time he was living West Virginia was part of Old Virginia. Most of the records can be found in Boutetort Co., Virginia.

Some researchers believe that he is the above John Jacob Mefford but I am a little doubtful. My reason being his will in Boutetorut County is filed as JOHN W. (WILLIAM) MEFFORD. George and Magdalena’s son was christened as John Jacob Mefford, so where did the W in the will come from. DUE TO THE DIFFFERENCE I SUGGEST TO ANY RESEARCHER OF THIS LINE BE VERY VERY CAREFUL AS TO HIS CORRECT PARENTS. I have only included the information on Jacob of Boutetourt County in this section since there is such a strong belief that he is the correct son of George Conrad and Anna Magdalena (____________) Mefford I.

By 1799, John had again moved, this time to Brown County, Ohio. He remained there until his death in 1834.

Page 240 Under Samuel F. Mefford, farmer. Post Office, Russellville. B.S. His parents were George and Polly Mefford. George was about eight years old when his father, JOHN MEFFORD, with his family emigrated from Kentucky to Adams County (now Brown County). After their arrival in Ohio, they were obligated, during the first nights, to camp in the root of a large sycamore tree. The following day, they again started on their journey and arrived at their destination. They settled about one mile nearly east of where Pisqah Ridge Church is now located. The first thing done was to erect a log cabin, after which they began to cut down the timber which surrounded them.

In the name of God, Amen. I, JOHN MEFFORD, of Brown County and the State of Ohio, being weak in body but of sound mine and memory do make and publish this, my last will and testament, in manner and form following, that is to say, 1st I give and devise unto my beloved wife, Elizabeth Mefford, the one equal undivided half of the farm on which I now reside, during and to the full end and term of her natural life. I do will and bequeath to my said wife, Elizabeth, the one equal third of ally my personal estate, after thereout of paying all my just debts, funeral expenses and executing this my last will and testament, so far as it has a bearing on settling my personal estate.
And it is my will and desire that my executors shall at my death take possession of and rent the other undivided half of said farm on which I now reside, until the death of my said wife, Elizabeth, which said rents or profits thereof shall be equally divided among my 2 daughters, POLLY CAMPBELL and RACHEL SELL, and my 2 granddaughters, that is the daughters of my daughter, ANN KILLPATRICK, dec’d. That is the granddaughters shall be equal with one of the others, and paid to them yearly after there of, paying themselves for their trouble.
I will and bequeath to my son, GEORGE MEFFORD, 400 dollars, to be paid out of my personal estate if there should be that sum remaining after paying all debts and expenses as first mentioned but if there should not be the sum of 400 dollars, I will that what there is shall be paid to him and the balance to be made up out of the land when it is sold and paid to him, but if there should be more than 400 dollars after paying my debts and other expenses as first mentioned and the said 400 dollars, my will and desire is that the remainder be equally divided among my daughters, POLLY CAMPBELL, RACHEL SELL, SALLY CHAPMAN, MALINDA HENRY and the two daughters of my daughter ANN KILLPATRICK, dec’d.
And I give and devise to my daughter, Sally Chapman, my farm containing 60 acres, more or less, and adjoining lands of James Henry, George Mefford, Harvey Chapman and the heirs of Thomas Corsick de’d, to have and hold the same. And I give and devise to my daughter, Malinda Henry, the farm that I bought of Stephen Washburn, containing 60 acres more or less, to her to have and to hold the same. And I will and devise that the farm on which I now reside shall be sold by my executors at the death of my said wife, Elizabeth, and the money arising from the sale thereof shall be divided as follows: 1st 100 dollars to my son, HENRY MEFFORD, and if any is want-paid. Then all expenses in selling said farm shall be paid. The balance I will and bequeath to be equally divided among my 2 daughters, Polly Campbell and Rachel Sell, and my2 granddaughters that is the daughters of my daughter Ann Killpatrick, de’d., that is the 2 granddaughters shall have an equal share with one of the other and no more. And I do hereby appoint my 2 sons, George Mefford and Henry Mefford, executors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

As supplies ran low, all of the books were used up for wadding for the guns, even the church records. At the conclusion of the war, in 1637, the Church began records again.
