Enduring understanding

Understand how historical values and legacies of Europeans and Aboriginal people differ in Canada and have had varied impacts.

INVESTIGATING COATS OF ARMS

Identify parts of Canada’s coat of arms

Consider the following coat of arms as you begin to look at the impacts of imperialism in Canada. Make a list of any symbols you recognize in Canada’s coat of arms below. Explain what the symbol represents and, if possible, identify what place the symbols might be connected to (i.e. Harp on shield – Ireland).

Compare coats of arms

Would this be an effective coat of arms for Canada? In comparison to the crest you just analyzed, would this one be more appropriate in representing Canada? Or does our current coat of arms effectively symbolize Canada? Make a list of any symbols you recognize in the coat of arms below. For each symbol, identify what it represents and, if possible, what place it's connected to.

Discuss what the current coat of arms suggests about Canada

The current Canadian coat of arms was adopted in 1921. Although this is after Canada became a country (1867), it is before 1931, the year Canada received "independent nation" status from Britain. Considering this information, respond to the following questions.

What does the coat of arms suggest about Canada?

To what extent is the Canadian coat of arms Eurocentric? Explain.
