WEEKLY LESSON PLAN

TEACHER E. Whiteside COURSE AP Calculus AB

8th WEEK OF SCHOOL DATES: 10/12 – 10/16/2015_

Learning Focus – Unit #2 – Derivatives

|Monday 10/12 |1. The students will learn related rates |

|AP Topic: Derivatives|Terms – related rates |

| |2. Engage and connect – |

| |Basic derivatives |

| |3. Guided instruction – |

| |In real world problems, the rate of change of one quantity is related to the rate of change of another. We will use |

| |implicit differentiation to see how the rates of change are related. |

| |Problem solving procedure |

| |Write down everything given in the problem. |

| |Find an equation that relates your variables. |

| |Use implicit differentiation to take the derivative of the equation |

| |Input the given data into the derivative and solve for the rate of change. |

| |Practice: throughout the lesson |

| |4. Check for understanding – Student discussion and responses to questions |

| |5. Assignment – Page 154 # 1 - 21, 25 - 27 |

|Tuesday 10/13 |1. The students will practice related rates problems |

|AP Topic: Derivatives |Terms - Implicit differentiation |

| |2. Engage and connect – |

| |Basic derivatives |

| |3. Guided instruction – |

| |• Reinforce strategies for solving related rates problems. |

| |• Work additional examples involving rate of change of angles. |

| |Practice: throughout the lesson |

| |4. Check for understanding – Student discussion and responses to questions |

| |5. Assignment – Page 156 # 42 - 45 |

|Wednesday 10/14 |No Class due to PSAT |

|AP Topic: | |

|Derivatives | |

|Thursday 10/15 |Mini test over basic derivatives skills |

|AP Topic: Derivatives | |

|Friday 10/16 |1. The students will review for test over implicit differentiation and related rates |

|AP Topic: Derivatives |Terms – Implicit differentiation |

| |2. Engage and connect – |

| |Basic derivatives |

| |3. Guided instruction – |

| |Practice solving for dy/dx. |

| |Setup related rates problems |

| |When we take the derivative of something other than x we will use the chain rule and then solve for dy/dx. |

| |Practice: throughout the lesson |

| |4. Check for understanding – Student discussion and responses to questions |

| |5. Assignment – Test review |
