Across Scotland, schools are encouraging a more standardised approach to uniform and from August 2013, our revised school uniform will change, following extensive consultation with parents, pupils and staff.

We emphasise the importance of uniform for a number of reasons-

Ethos

School uniform helps give pupils a sense of identity and creates community spirit.  How we dress also affects how we behave and establishes a positive work ethic.

Achievement

The wearing of full school uniform is one of the factors that lead to enhanced pupil achievement, since it gives a purposeful atmosphere to a school.

Security

Since every pupil wears uniform, we can more easily identify intruders in the school thereby affording greater security for all.

Expense

Designer label clothes are notoriously expensive with peer pressure on pupils producing its own pressures on parents to purchase particular items of clothing. Encouraging our pupils to wear a school uniform removes this financial pressure and can mean considerable savings for families.

Junior School (S1-3)

• Plain black footwear

• Plain black trousers

• Plain black skirt with black or neutral tights

Option 1: Plain white polo shirt and plain black sweatshirt, preferably with school crest.

Option 2: Plain white shirt with school tie and plain black V-neck sweater or cardigan, preferably with school crest.

Senior School (S4-6)

• Plain black footwear

• Plain black trousers

• Plain black skirt with black or neutral tights

• Plain white or black shirt and School tie

• Plain black V-neck sweater or cardigan, preferably with school crest

• *Burgundy school blazer with school crest.

*optional for S4-5 but the school has a clear expectation that all S6 students will take pride in wearing the school blazer.

To keep warm to and from school, pupils may wear hats, coats, scarves, jackets, tops and boots (especially during cold spells) to and from the school. These clothing items must not be worn in class (with the exception of boots during periods of inclement weather).

As part of our emphasis on ethos and high standards at the school, any type of jeans, jeggings, leggings and/or sports dress are not part of our school uniform. Likewise, "hoodies" and other fashion clothing associated with the street culture (tracksuit bottoms and baseball caps or any hats) are also not part of our school uniform.

We ask that all children and young people attending the school wear plain black footwear. Footwear such as Ugg boots and pumps made from soft materials provide insufficient protection, compromising H&S, and therefore do not form part of our school uniform.

Should your child decide to wear a black skirt to school, we would ask that their school skirt is of a reasonable and modest length. We would ask all parents/carers for their support on this matter.

We expect all pupils, attending Peterhead Academy, to wear the uniform at all times and this includes attendance at the school for their prelim and final SQA examinations.

Likewise, a pupil representing the school at a formal event, they will be expected to wear the school uniform, to reflect the high standards of our school.
