Decision Tree. For questions about this guidance, please e-mail SCPHschools@.

FACE COVERINGS

Sacramento County Public Health strongly recommends that individuals in pre-school and

child care settings continue to mask in indoor settings. Every provider should be familiar

with the Guidance for the Use of Face Masks and keep in mind the following:

? Never place face masks on babies or children under 2 years of age because it poses a

danger and risk for suffocation.

? Children should not wear face masks while sleeping.

? Providers must ensure the use of face masks does not cause children to overheat in hot

weather.

STAFF OR CHILD WITH SYMPTOMS

Individuals with symptoms of illness should stay home and test for COVID-19.

? If test is negative, may return if at least 24 hours have passed since fever and symptoms

have improved significantly.

? If test is positive, stay at home for 5 days. Isolation can end after Day 5 if symptoms are

not present or are resolving and a diagnostic specimen collected on Day 5 or later tests

negative. If unable to test or choosing not to test, and symptoms are not present or are

resolving, isolation can end after Day 10.

CHILD EXPOSED TO PERSON WITH COVID-19 AT PRE-SCHOOL/CHILD CARE

Parents/Caregivers should be notified of the potential exposure. Providers may consider

permitting asymptomatic exposed children to attend pre-school and child care, regardless of

their COVID-19 vaccination status, with a strong recommendation for use of a well-fitting masks

by children 2 years of age and older during the 10 day period after exposure. Recommend the

child test for COVID-19 5 days after the exposure.

CHILD ATTENDS PRE-SCHOOL/CHILD CARE ¨C EXPOSED TO COVID-19 OUTSIDE OF THIS SETTING

child care, regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status, with a strong recommendation for

CHILDREN WHO HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 IN THE PAST 90 DAYS

Asymptomatic children that have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 90 days are not

required to quarantine or test for COVID-19 in response to a new COVID-19 exposure. However,

if a child develops new symptoms after being exposed to COVID-19, they should quarantine and

test.

STAFF EXPOSED TO A PERSON WITH COVID-19

If fully vaccinated:

May continue to attend work. Test on Day 5 (if positive, isolate). If symptoms develop, test

and stay home.

If unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated:

Stay home for 5 days. Test on Day 5. May return on Day 6 as long as they do not develop

symptoms of illness and do not test positive for COVID-19.

CONTINUOUS HOUSEHOLD EXPOSURE (CHILD LIVES WITH SOMEONE WITH COVID-19)

When a child lives with someone with COVID-19 and the child has not developed symptoms,

providers may consider permitting the exposed child to attend pre-school and child care,

regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status, with a strong recommendation for use of a

well-fitting masks by children 2 years of age and older during the 10 day period after exposure.

Recommend the child test for COVID-19 5 days after the exposure.
