Clayton, North Carolina is home to Novo Nordisk’s only U.S. manufacturing facility, Novo Nordisk Pharmaceutical Industries, Inc. (NNPII). On August 26, 2015, Novo Nordisk announced plans to invest an estimated $2 billion USD over the next five years in new production facilities in Clayton and Mal?v, Denmark. Approximately $1.8 billion of this is being invested in Clayton. The expansions will help Novo Nordisk meet the increasing worldwide demand for its diabetes medicines. The facilities are expected to be operational in 2020.Our FacilityNovo Nordisk’s current manufacturing facility in Clayton is 457,000 square feet and includes offices and laboratory space for raw material quality assurance, in-process testing, and housing finished products. Our products are distributed to Argentina, China, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, USA, Brazil, Mexico ExpansionOnce complete, the new facility will measure 833,000 square feet and have a footprint of 417,639 square feet – the equivalent to approximately 7 football fields. It will be the first location outside of Denmark where Novo Nordisk diabetes medicines will be produced. This expansion is expected to create close to 700 new jobs once the facility is completed, with an average salary of more than $68,000 - $22,000 more than the average salary and $15,000 more than the median household income in Johnston County. At the same time, Novo Nordisk expects to create a significant employment effect during the construction period with up to 2,500 people working on the project at peak construction. Economic ImpactNovo Nordisk’s Clayton facility functions with the help of nearly 332 N.C. suppliers and vendors, with a total annual expenditure of over $51 million in 2015. We have supplier relationships with 178 small businesses, including female, veteran, and minority-owned.
