DEAD MAN’S DOCTRINE

Isa 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to THIS WORD, it is because there is no light in them.

Calvinism, the Cults, heretics, and apostates seem to thrive on the quotes of dead men heroes as proof texts rather than citing that which throughly furnishes the man of God.  TULIPS, Frost the Campbellite, and Joey Faust the Kingdom exclusionist are such that use such a tactic to promote their heresy and false doctrine.

History, Tradition, or the Scriptures?

2 Tim 3:16, 17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Thess 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether BY WORD, or OUR EPISTLE.

We are told here that it is the scriptures that are profitable FOR DOCTRINE, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness to furnish the man of God THROUGHLY. We are not told that history, creeds, councils, catechisms, articles of faith, and pronouncements of our fallible heroes of today or the fallible dead men of yesterday, who cannot be questioned in regard on their comments which people with an agenda dig up from history; “. . . ye need not that ANY man teach you . . . (1 John 2:27)”

Was there a place for tradition in apostolic times? Is their a place for tradition now? Some Catholics and Protestants and even some fundamentalists think so. Now, if they can get their traditions from the words of the Apostles and the word of God, we can agree. However, what we have now is the word of God, and it is supreme over all the above, including the historical sepulchres of dead men’s bones. If you want a living hero’s words, hear this fellow:

"Fundamentalists cannot easily compromise or resolve even trivial differences over doctrine, morality, or lifestyle. Each adheres to ABSOLUTE STANDARDS.” --Billy Vick Bartlett

Traditions of the Elders?

Matt 10:17 But beware of MEN: for they will deliver you up to the COUNCILS, and they will scourge you in their synagogues . . .

Matt 26:59 . . . the ELDERS, and all the COUNCIL, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death . . .

Mark 7:5, 8, 9, 13 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders . . . For LAYING ASIDE the commandment of God, ye hold the TRADITION OF MEN, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye REJECT the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own TRADITION . . . Making the word of God of NONE EFFECT through your TRADITION, which ye have delivered . . . (also Mark 15:2, 3, 6)

Col 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through PHILOSOPHY and vain deceit, after the TRADITION OF MEN, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

1 Pet 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers . . .

Should we be impressed with the vain conversation and tradition of our fathers or our previous elders so that they become our play book for our faith and practice? Should the philosophy, vain deceit, and traditions of men coming from modern day “Johnny Come Late lies” dictate to us (who hold the word of God supreme) and allow them to spoil us with those things? Obviously, our Saviour’s sentiments on the traditions of the elders and men are plain and clear in the above passages. Jesus saw the traditions of men as laying aside and rejecting the commandment of God and MAKING THE WORD OF GOD OF NONE AFFECT.

Those Who Cause Divisions Contrary to the Doctrine of the Word of God

Rom 16:17, 18 I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

Act 20:28 - 31 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock . . . For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

1 Cor 16:13 . . . Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit ye like men, be strong.

Jude 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly CONTEND for the faith which was ONCE delivered unto the saints.

Heb 5:14 . . . strong meat belongeth to them that are of FULL AGE [mature], even those who by reason OF USE have their SENSES EXERCISED to DISCERN BOTH GOOD AND EVIL.

Today’s Neo-evangelical, modernistic, and ecumenical positions of even supposed Fundamentalists and Baptists is pathetic and sickening. What are our instructions in regard to apostasy, heresy, false teaching, and cultism among and within our camps? Are we to encourage, compliment, coddle, befriend, ignore such, and dismiss their divisions, apostasy, heresy, and even their infiltration? We are warned about those who with fair speeches, who deceive the hearts of the simple. Either they are the culprits or Fundamental Baptists at large are the culprits. Do they dare say fundamentalism at large is the problem? Notice that either we or they are to:

1. Mark and avoid the dividers

2. Mark and avoid the contrary doctrine

3. Mark and avoid the deceivers

4. Take heed

5. Watch for the grievous wolves entering among us

6. Watch for those saying perverse things

7. Watch for those trying to draw away disciples from us

8. Remember Paul’s WARNINGS of these things with tears

Even some of the one time supporters of the written and verbal lashings that J. Frank Norris, Noel Smith, and Harvey Springer gave the enemy now are complaining about those who are guilty of "shaking leaders, churches, machines, programs, and multitudes" and those found "carrying the broad axe, warring on several fronts, digging out ‘RELIGIOUS RATS’ everywhere, castigating and breathing fire wherever compromise was even suspected” . . . “would now consider such tactics too divisive.” -- J. Frank Norris, the “TEXAS TORNADO," in Fundamentalism in America, p. 134, 182. What havoc Baalam could cause in Independent Fundamental Baptist circles, if he were alive today, without the Texas Tornado taking him to task. He could be very comfortable among many Fundamental Baptist preachers and would get a preaching spot with them, since he DOES preach the Gospel. However, Baalam is long gone, dead, and buried, and we have nothing to worry about now . . . or do we?

The person of Dead Men Mean Nothing to God or Us

Gal 2:6 But of those who SEEMED TO BE SOMEWHAT, (whatsoever they are, it MAKETH NO MATTER TO ME: GOD accepteth NO MAN’s PERSON :) for they who SEEMED TO BE SOMEWHAT in conference ADDED NOTHING TO ME . . .

Gal 2:11-14 But when PETER was come withstood him to the face because HE WAS TO BE BLAMED . . . WHEN I SAW that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter . . .

1 Tim 1:19, 20 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

2 Tim 1:15 This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

2 Tim 2:16, 17 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus . . .

2 Tim 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world . . .

2 Tim 4:14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works:

Titus 1:10, 11 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

Titus 1:12, 13 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

We would like to see our neo-evangelical friends apply their neo-evangelical argument of “him that is not against us is with us” to the apostle Paul's treatment of Peter's and Barnabas hypocrisy (Gal. 1:11-14); Demas' worldliness (2 Tim. 4:10); Phygellus' and Hermogenes' cowardice (2 Tim. 1:15); Hymenaeus' and Alexander's apostasy (1Tim. 1:20); Hymenaeus' and Philetus’ profane babblings (2 Timothy 2:16-17); Alexander's gainsaying (2 Tim. 4: 14); and all the Cretian fundamentalist LIARS (Titus 1:12). Paul was not afraid to name names and false teaching, apostasy, and heresy and even hypocrisy. Still, if you are a Marshmallow Baptist or a Powder Puff Baptist or a Spongy Baptist, you probably will ignore the scriptures and dismiss anything that the brethren (living or dead) do, if they are in your camp. And then there is the matter of not being able to split a sponge. But if our false teacher and heretic sympathizers do not think that we have the authority or the commission to do what we are doing, let them confront us head on . . . with scripture . . . of course.
