“THE GREAT DEPARTURE”

2 TIMOTHY 4:1-2

INTRO: There has never before in the history of the professing church been

such a great departure as we are seeing now. Satan is working over-

time in his work of deception and destruction. In our text, Paul warns

Timothy, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times

some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and

doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience

seared with a hot iron.” Warren Wiersbe writes, “Throughout Paul’s

letters, the Spirit speaks ‘in stated words’ (expressly) that the church

will see apostasy, a falling away from the true faith…The word ‘depart’

in the Gk. Gives us our English word ‘apostasy.’ He points out too the

cause for the apostasy—not the ‘growing intelligence of scholars’ but

the satanic influence of demons so that professed believers deny the

basic doctrines of the Bible. The problem is not with the head but

with the heart!” (1)

The passage before us sounds out a great warning to each true

believer in Christ Jesus. Notice what the writer is talking about: A

great departure. Departure from what? THE FAITH. The teachings of

God’s Holy Word. Also note that this departure comes from within not

from without. It is talking about false teachers within the church

itself. Not false doctrines and philosophies from unbelievers in the

world, but within the professing church, within the sphere of religion.

God’s Spirit is warning us that some preachers and teachers will turn

away from the faith. They will turn away from the Lord Jesus, His

Virgin birth, death and resurrection. They will deny salvation by grace

through faith in the finished work of Christ. They will deny that Christ

will return for His own.

There is a Jesus Seminar composed of 100 so-called scholars. . .

Various groups throughout the United States. They meet, as I

understand it, twice a year. Recently, that group made an

announcement: that in the opinions of these scholars, Jesus never

promised to return to earth. . . will not return to earth. . . and never

indicated that He might. "How am I supposed to react to a statement

like that?" you ask. I'll tell you exactly how. All they are saying is that

God is this universe can't communicate accurately. . And if He can't

you and I are up the creek without a paddle. . . and so are they! That's

all it means!

Paul warned Timothy that those who shall depart are those who once

had the faith or professed the faith. You cannot move away from

something unless you are first there. One of the strangest aspects of

modern popular "evangelicalism" is its refusal to separate from error.

The relationship of many "evangelical" leaders with modernist Robert

Schuller is an example of this. Schuller reinterprets the doctrines of

the Word of God to conform with his self-esteem philosophy. His Christ

is a Jesus who provides men with self-esteem. Schuller's gospel is the

replacement of negative self concepts with positive ones. To Schuller,

sin is merely the lack of self-esteem. To Schuller, the greatest evil is to

call men sinners in a biblical fashion and thereby injure their self-

esteem. Schuller is a universalist who believes that all people are the

children of God. His goal is to help each person understand and enjoy

this "fact." In spite of Schuller's rejection of the Word of God and his

vast unscriptural influence in our society, large numbers of

"evangelical" leaders promote him and work hand-in-hand with him.

Billy Graham has frequently appeared with and praised Schuller. In

1983, Schuller sat in the front row of distinguished guests invited to

honor Graham's 65th birthday. In 1986 Schuller was invited by

Graham to speak at the International Conference for Itinerant

Evangelists in Amsterdam. Other featured speakers included many of

today's most prominent evangelical leaders, including Bill Bright,

Leighton Ford, and Luis Palau. Schuller was featured on the platform

of Graham's Atlanta Crusade in 1994.

Southern Baptist leader W.A. Criswell endorsed Schuller's ministry in

1981 in an ad in Christianity Today's Leadership magazine. He said, "I

know Dr. Schuller personally. He's my good friend. I've spoken on his

platform. I'm well acquainted with his ministry. If you want to develop

fruitful evangelism in your church; if you want your laity to experience

positive motivation and ministry fulfilling training, then I know,

without a doubt, that you will greatly benefit from the Robert Schuller

Film Workshop." A year prior to that, Criswell also endorsed a book by

Schuller's mentor, self-esteem theologian Norman Vincent Peale.

On April 29, 1980, Robert Schuller appeared with popular evangelical

and charismatic leaders Bill Bright, D. James Kennedy, James

Robison, Jim Bakker, Rex Humbard, Pat Robertson, Pat Boone, Nicky

Cruz, David du Plessis, Demos Shakarian, and Thomas Zimmerman

(Assemblies of God) at the Washington for Jesus Rally. Joining them

was independent Baptist pastor Jerry Falwell. Many of the Promise

Keepers speakers and leaders are connected with Schuller. For

example, John Maxwell, Jack Hayford, and Randy Phillips were among

the keynote speakers at the Men's Conference '95 (March 2-4, 1995)

held at Schuller's Crystal Cathedral. Schuller also spoke at the

conference.

Bill Hybels of the Willow Creek Community Church near Chicago

credits Schuller as an inspiration for his work, has promoted Schuller

in various ads in Christianity Today, and is a frequent speaker at

meetings organized by Schuller. For example, in 1996 Hybels was on

the staff of Schuller's annual Institute for Successful Church

Leadership. Hybels is one of the chief promoters of churches which

cater to the desires of the people. He started his church by taking a

survey of the community and building a "church" which would satisfy

what the people wanted in a church. A Chicago sociologist said Hybels

preaches a very upbeat message--"a salvationist message, but the idea

is not so much being saved from the fires of hell. Rather, it's being

saved from meaninglessness and aimlessness in this life. It's more of a

soft-sell." Hybels' church does not have conventional worship. It has

no altar, no choir, organ, hymnals, or song books. Its music ranges

from rock to jazz to country to classical. It is no wonder that Hybels

would love Robert Schuller and his self-esteem message. The stranger

fact is that Hybels is frequently recommended by and speaks with

those who claim to be Bible based. He spoke at Dallas Seminary's

1989 Pastors Conference, for example. Hybels has also spoken at

Moody Bible Institute's Founder's Week and has taught his philosophy

of church growth as a faculty member of MBI's graduate school.

Schuller's 1996 autobiography, My Soul's Adventure with God, was

endorsed by Paul Crouch, Jack Hayford, John Wimber, and popular

Southern Baptist leader W.A. Criswell. The fact that so many

"evangelical" leaders treat Schuller as a brother in Christ is evidence of

their blindness. Christ warns us not to follow blind leaders. "And if the

blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch" (Matthew 15:14).

(Updated May 20, 2002 (First published February 7, 1998) (David

Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368,

Port Huron, MI 48061) I want you to consider with me this morning,

THE GREAT DEPARTURE. Note with me three things:

THIS IS A:

(1) DEPARTING FROM CHRIST

1 TIMOTHY 4:1a—“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the

latter times some shall depart from the faith…”

*Paul warned Timothy that this was not a possibility but a reality that

would occur. And the sad truth is that not only will some preachers and

teachers depart from the faith, but also many professing saints. I want

you to know that this departure does not begin as a great departure but

as a subtle one. It starts:

A. WHEN WE FAIL TO STAND FOR CHRIST. There should be no

question in anyone’s mind that knows us where we stand in our

relationship with God! William Barclay said, “In the Christian life there

must be the courage which will never retreat and the love which will

never fail” (2).

ILLUS: A man died! All the people where he worked and all his

neighbors came to his funeral; people who had known him for

years. When the obituary was read it reflected that he was a

member of a church. His friends and associates were shocked.

He had never once identified himself as a Christian. Let me

ask you this morning three questions:

• Are you saved?

• Does God know you are saved?

• Do others know you are saved?

The Apostle Paul tell us in Ephesians 5:5-11—“Let no man deceive you

with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God

upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with

them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord:

walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and

righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And

have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather

reprove them.” Oliver B. Greene in his commentary on Ephesians

writes concerning v11 of Ephesians 5, “Verse 11 is not a suggestion—it

is a positive and direct command…We are not to fellowship with the

enemies of Jesus. Born again Christians are not to fellowship with the

lust of the flesh and the ungodliness of the world. Friendship with the

world is spiritual adultery against God. We are not to fellowship with

liberals, modernists, and haters of God, deniers of the faith” (3).

WE are to STAND WITH CHRIST and STAND FOR CHRIST! The

departure from the faith begins subtly when we fail to stand for Christ.

B. WHEN WE FAIL TO SHARE CHRIST. Stephen Neill said, “It is not

open for any layman to say, ‘I cannot be an evangelist.’ If he is a

Christian, he must be a witness. If he is not willing to be a witness, it

is time he gave up calling himself a Christian” (4). Psalm 107:2 says,

“Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from

the hand of the enemy.” If we truly are HIS, then we are departing

from the faith if we fail to share HIM with others!

ILLUS: The world has more winnable people than ever before ... but it

is possible to come out of a ripe field empty-handed. -- Donal

McGavran. Leadership, Vol. 12, no. 4.

C. WHEN WE FAIL TO SHINE FOR CHRIST. Jesus said in Matthew

5:16—“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good

works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” The word SHINE in

the Greek here means “to beam, to radiate brilliantly.” Let your holy

life, your pure conversation, and your faithful instructions, be

everywhere seen and known. Always, in all societies, in all business, at

home and abroad, in prosperity and adversity, let it be seen that you

are real Christians (Albert Barnes’ Notes on the Bible).

ILLUS: One thing God detests is the religion of words. It was Robert

E. Speer who said: "After thirty years of leadership in

Christian work, it is my conclusion and conviction that the

greatest missionary problem is just the failure of Christian

people to live up to their profession."

We must by the help of God and leadership of the Holy Spirit live holy

lives and let our light shine bright for His glory!

ILLUS: It has been said: "The stars do not shout; they only shine."

Any Christian, however obscure, can be a light to those

around him and thus attract and guide men to the harbor of

peace. "Let your light so shine before men that they may see

your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." --Topical

Illustrations

How should we shine?:

1. By A Consistent Walk. By our lifestyle. Where we go, who we go

with, what we do. As Philippians 1:27a tells us, “Only let your

conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ…” The word

conversation in the Greek there means “manner of life” or “lifestyle.”

ILLUS: Hugh McIntosh said, “A genuine Christian ought to be as

distinguishable amongst his fellows as is a civilized man

among savages” (5).

2. By A Consistent Talk. Ephesians 5:1-4 says, “Be ye therefore

followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also

hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a

sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. But fornication, and all

uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you,

as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting,

which is not convenient; but rather giving of thanks.” We should not

say one thing and do something else.

ILLUS: Aesop, the ancient storyteller, told this fable: Once upon a

time, a donkey found a lion's skin. He tried it on, strutted

around, and frightened many animals. Soon a fox came

along, and the donkey tried to scare him, too. But the fox,

hearing the donkey's voice, said, "If you want to terrify me,

you'll have to disguise your bray." Aesop's moral: Clothes

may disguise a fool, but his words will give him away.—

--Traditional.

D. WHEN WE FAIL, IF NEED BE, TO SUFFER FOR CHRIST. 2

Timothy 3:12 tells us, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus

shall suffer persecution.” So often we shrink from possibility that we

might be called upon to suffer for our faith. But Jesus himself told us

that facing persecution for living for Him should not surprise us, “If

the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye

were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are

not of this world, but I have chosen you out of this world, therefore the

world hateth you. Remember the word I said unto you, The servant is

not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also

persecute you; if they have kept my sayings, they will keep your’s also.

But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because

they know not him that sent me.”

Being true to God landed the three Hebrew children in the fiery

furnace, Daniel in the lion’s den, and Paul in prison.

ILLUS: We must never forget that the word persevere comes from the

prefix per, meaning through, coupled with the word severe. It

means to keep pressing on, trusting God, looking up, doing

our duty—even through severe circumstances (6).

The hymnwriter, Isaac Watts wrote:

“Must I be carried to the skies on flowery beds of ease,

While others fought to win the prize, and sailed the

bloody seas?” (Isaac Watts, All-American Church Hymnal, p.

316)

(2) DEPARTING FROM THE CHURCH

HEBREWS 10:25—“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves

together, AS THE MANNER OF SOME IS; but exhorting one

another: and so much the more, as ye see the day

approaching.”

*To neglect Christian meetings is to give up the encouragement and help of

other Christians. We gather together to share our faith and strengthen

each other in the Lord. As we near the end of the age and as we get closer

to the day when Christ will return, we may face many spiritual struggles,

tribulations, and even persecution. Anti-Christian forces will grow in

strength. Difficulties should never be excuses for missing church

services. Rather, as difficulties arise, we should make an even greater

effort to be faithful in attendance (7).

ILLUS: 40% of American adults attend church in a typical weekend. (2000)

From the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties, church attendance was

on a roller coaster ride. In 1986, 42% of adults attended a church

service during a typical week in January. Attendance rose steadily,

reaching a peak of 49% in 1991, before beginning a very slow but

steady descent back to 40% in January, 2000. ()

*What are some important things we should do to keep us active in our

church?:

A. WE SHOULD LOVE OUR CHURCH. A church is like a bank. The more

you put into it the more interest you have.- _Pulpit Helps_, Nov. 1980.

Now most of us would agree that we love our Church, but here are some

things we will never hear in our Church or any other Church for that

matter:

ILLUS: THINGS YOU NEVER HEAR IN CHURCH

1. Hey! It's my turn to sit in the front pew.

2. I was so enthralled, I never noticed your sermon went 25 minutes over time.

3. Personally I find witnessing much more enjoyable than golf. 4. I've decided to give our church the $500 a month I used to

send to TV evangelists.

5. I volunteer to be the permanent teacher for the junior high

Sunday school class.

6. Forget the denominational minimum salary, let's pay our

pastor so he can live like we do.

7. I love it when we sing hymns I've never heard before!

8. Since we're all here, let's start the service early.

9. Pastor, we'd like to send you to this Bible seminar in the

Bahamas.

10. Nothing inspires me and strengthens my commitment like

our annual stewardship campaign!- -source: unknown

All jokes aside we should love our Church dearly! It is the Christian’s

place of renewal, rejoicing, refueling, and reflection. We should love our

Church so much that nothing can keep us from being there when the

Body of Christ meets together.

B. WE SHOULD SUPPORT OUR CHURCH. With what?:

1. Time (Psalm 90:12; Colossians 4:5).

ILLUS: The empty pew, your vacant place at the church, is a vote with

the world and against the Christ. The world that is opposed to

Christ asks nothing more from you in its enmity to Christ than

that you do what Thomas did--stay away. "I am an Empty Pew.

I vote for the world as against God. I deny the Bible. I mock at

the preached Word of God. I rail at Christian brotherhood. I

laugh at prayer. I break the Fourth Commandment. I am a

witness to solemn vows broken. I advise men to eat drink and

be merry, for tomorrow they die. I join my voice with every

atheist and rebel against human and divine law. I am an Empty

Pew. I am a grave in the midst of the congregation. Read my

epitaph and be wise." --McCartney

2. Talent. We must employ the talents that God has gifted each one of

us with for the glory of God! 1 Peter 4:10 says, “As every man hath

received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good

stewards of the manifold grace of God.” The Apostle Paul said in

Ephesians 4:7, 11-12—“But unto every one of us is given grace

according to the measure of the gift of Christ. And he gave some,

apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some,

pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of

the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” Notice what the

Bible tells us is the purpose of these gifts, “For the perfecting of the

Saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of

Christ.” Each member is needed. Each gift must be employed for

Our Church to be successful!

Listen to the words of this poem:

Hide not thy talent in the earth,

However small it be;

Its faithful use, its utmost worth,

God will require of thee.

His own, which He hath lent on trust,

He asks of thee again;

Little or much, the claim is just,

And thine excuses vain.

Go, then, and strive to do thy part,

Though humble it may be;

The ready hand, the willing heart,

Are all heaven asks of thee.

- William Cutler

3. Treasures (1 Cors. 16:2; 2 Cors. 9:7).

ILLUS: The day the church treasurer resigned the church asked the

local grain elevator manager to take the position. He agreed

under two conditions:

-That no treasurer's report would be given for the first year.

-That no questions be asked about finances during that year.

The people were surprised but finally agreed since most of

them did business with him and he was a trusted man. At

the end of the year he gave his report:

* The church indebtedness of $228,000 has been paid.

* The minister's salary had been increased by 8%.

* The Cooperative Program gifts has been paid 200%.

* There were no outstanding bills.

* And there was a cash balance of $11,252!

Immediately the shocked congregation asked, "How did you

do it? Where did the money come from?" He quietly

answered: "Most of you bring your grain to my elevator.

Throughout the year I simply withheld ten percent on your

behalf and gave it to the church in your name. You didn't

even miss it!" "Do you see what we could do for the Lord if

we were all willing to give at least the tithe to God, who really

owns it?" And so the new treasurer had made his point.—

Adapted from A Sourcebook for Stewardship Sermons, by

James E. Carter.

C. WE SHOULD PRAY FOR OUR CHURCH (James 5:16). Each new day

we should lift each other’s names out to God. We should pray that we

all remain submissive to the Spirit, strong in the Faith, and serving God

with all fervor.

ILLUS: No man should be alone when he opposes Satan. The church

and the ministry of the Word were instituted for this purpose,

that hands may be joined together and one may help another. If

the prayer of one doesn't help, the prayer of another will. –

Martin Luther, "Martin Luther--The Early Years," Christian

History, no. 34.

Prayer is essential to the life of the Church. The members of the Body

of Christ should be able to count on others for support and prayer. Our

Church should stay alert to pray for all the needs of our members.

D. WE SHOULD WORK IN OUR CHURCH. When Nehemiah led a

company after the captivity to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, it was

said of the them, “..for the people had a mind to work.” I wish that could

be said in every Bible-believing Church. But it seems it is hard to get

people involved in the work of the Lord in the days we now live.

ILLUS: What the Church Needs Today

More tithes and fewer drives.

More action and less faction.

More workers and fewer shirkers.

More backers and fewer slackers.

More praying and less straying.

More of God's plans and less of man's.

More burden-bearers and fewer tale-bearers.

- Exerpted in Pulpit Helps,

April, 1996, p. 8

In the work of the Lord each member is needed. NO One is insignificant

or unnecessary.

ILLUS: A conductor was rehearsing his great orchestra. The organ was

rolling, giving beautiful melody. The drums were thundering.

The trumpets were blaring out. The violins were singing

beautifully. Suddenly something seemed wrong. Someone in the

orchestra had thought, With all this going on, I can rest a while.

This is a rehearsal anyway. The conductor threw up his arms

and said, "Where's the piccolo?" The piccolo player said, "I'm

obscure. I don't amount to much. With all of this going on, I

don't have to keep playing." But the one with the trained ear

said, "Every one of us is necessary." When you and I feel

obscure, we must remember God has something significant for

our lives, and we need to respond. -- Gordon Johnson, "Finding

Significance in Obscurity," Preaching Today, Tape No. 82

E. WE SHOULD COMPLIMENT OUR CHURCH. The word compliment

means “to show regard for, to pay a compliment to.” We should never

be part of the problem in the Church, but always part of the solution.

When we tell others that we a member of Meadowside Baptist Church we

should reflect the Love of the Savior and the Light of His Word through

our lives.

ILLUS: Stephen Brown explains that when a group of thoroughbred

horses face attack, they stand in a circle facing each other

and, with their back legs, kick out at the enemy. Donkeys do

just the opposite; they face the enemy and kick each other! How

often the church does just that -- ignoring the real enemy while

we attack fellow believers.

In this GREAT DEPARTURE, We see A DEPARTING FROM CHRIST, A DEPARTING FROM THE CHURCH, and finally…

(3) DEPARTING FROM CONVICTIONS

ACTS 20:24—“But none of these things move me, neither count I my

life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy,

and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to

testify the gospel of the grace of God.”

*Paul’s determination in Acts 20:24 should be the determination of each

believer. Paul, according to v23, was going “bound in the spirit unto

Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there.” But despite

his uncertainty, he was determined to stand by his convictions! We

should hold fast to our convictions also. We should never let our

convictions slide!

A. WHAT ARE CONVICTIONS? Convictions are what you believe to be

right. Someone has said, “What a man believes, he will die for. What a

man merely thinks, he will change his mind about” (8).

ILLUS: Pastor A.R. Bernard, of Brooklyn, NY, taught me the difference

between convictions and preference. 1. People who live by

preference can be negotiated out of their preferences.

Convictions are non-negotiable. 2. People who live by

preferences weaken under pressure. Those with conviction

grow stronger. 3. People who live by preference always dislike

those who hold convictions. - Edwin Louis Cole, Real Men

(Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1992) 47

B. WHAT ARE SOME CONVICTIONS WE SHOULD HOLD? We should

have convictions about:

1. What’s Right and What’s Wrong. WE are now living in a society

where there is no absolutes about being right or wrong. Many say

that there is no longer any black and white areas only an ugly gray.

But we must stand by our convictions of what the Bible teaches us.

If the Bible says it is right, IT IS RIGHT! And if the Bible says it is

wrong, IT IS WRONG!

ILLUS: There is today an evangelical rationalism which says that

the truth is in the Word and if you want to know truth, go

learn the Word. If you get the Word, you have the truth.

That is the evangelical rationalism that we have in

fundamentalist circles: "If you learn the text you've got the

truth." This evangelical rationalist wears our uniform. He

comes in wearing our uniform and says what the Pharisees

... said: "Well, truth is truth and if you believe the truth

you've got it." Such see no beyond and no mystic depth, no

mysterious or divine. They see only, "I believe in God the

Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus

Christ His only Son, our Lord." They have the text and the

code and the creed, and to them that is the truth. So they

pass it on to others. The result is we are dying spiritually.

To know the Truth, we must "know" the Son. -- A. W. Tozer

in Power for Living (Oct. 16, 1977). Christianity Today, Vol.

33, no. 13.

2. The Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16). A. Z. Conrad said, “This Book

outlives, outloves, outlifts, outlasts, outreaches, outruns and

outranks all books. This Book is faith-producing. It is hope-

awakening. It is death-destroying. And those who embrace it find

forgiveness of sin” (9). We should hold strongly to our convictions of

Its great doctrines:

a. The Genesis Account of Creation (Genesis 1:1).

b. The Attributes of God.

c. The Virgin Birth, Vicarious Death and Victorious

Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

d. Sin.

e. The Sacredness of Marriage and the Home.

The lack of scriptural knowledge is the source of all evils in the church. -- John Chrysostom. Leadership, Vol. 16, no. 2 It is

imperative that we as 2 Timothy 2:15 instructs us, “Study to shew

thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” How can we know what we are to stand for if we don’t know what we believe?

CLOSING: There is a Great Departure taking place today. There is a

DEPARTURE FROM CHRIST, a DEPARTURE FROM THE CHURCH,

and a DEPARTURE FROM CONVICTIONS. Charles Spurgeon said,

“I would choose to be cut limb from limb sooner than see those

whom I have loved and honored fall from the faith. It is a bitter

thing to us who are ministers of Christ, it is our curse and plague,

it costs us sleepless nights and miserable days when we hear of

those that did run well apparently turn back to the world, who play

the Judas (10). May we go from here today resolved to remain true

to the Savior who loved us, died for us, and redeemed us!
