American Speech Language Hearing Association— Small research awards to recent MAs and PhDs in the communication sciences as well as more significant awards to Clinicians with a history of outstanding clinical practice. No citizenship requirements.

Arthritis Foundation— Variety of funding opportunities for recent MDs, PhDs, junior faculty and senior faculty. Citizenship not specified.

Berlex Oncology Foundation-

Cancer Research Institute— Postdoctoral fellowships for immunologists with less than 3 years postdoctoral experience. Investigator awards for junior faculty in cancer immunology research, clinical, patient-centered, patient education, public awareness.

Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology— Predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowship program and visiting scholar program for senior scientist to research in toxicology at the institute in N.C. Many countries represented.

Jane Coffin Childs Foundation— Fellowships for postdocs with less than 1 year experience for Cancer research in the US. Citizenship of all countries accepted.

China Medical Board of New York, Inc.— Grant making institution that works directly with specific medical institutions in east and southeast Asia.

Crohns and Colitis Foundation— research, career dev, postdoctoral and predoctoral awards for investigation of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). No citizenship requirements, research must be performed in US.

Deafness Research Foundation- Deafness Research Foundation invites applications for grants available in year 2002 in support of research projects that promises to advance understanding of the causes, treatment and prevention of deafness and related ear disorders. The grants will be awarded to tax-exempt institutions in the United States for projects beginning January 1, 2002. Grant support is given for one, two or three years in an amount that cannot exceed $20,000 or $50,000. Continuation of funding is based on yearly progress reports.

Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Scholars— Fellowship program for faculty from abroad to gain access to study medical education in US and improve and expand medical education programs in their home country institutions. Candidates must reside and work in their home countries at time of application and have not less than 3 years of work experience as a faculty member in a school of medicine or a postgraduate medical education institution.

Ellison Medical Foundation- The foundation particularly wishes to stimulate new, creative research that night not be funded by traditional sources or that is often under-funded in the U.S. The Ellison Medical Foundation fosters research by means of grants-in-aid to investigators at universities and laboratories within the United States using a variety of award mechanisms including a New Scholars Program, Senior Scholars Program, Conferences and Workshops Awards Program, a Training Program and an Infrastructure Awards Program.

Epilepsy Foundation of America— Biological, Behavioral, and Social Sciences advancing the treatment, understanding and prevention of epilepsy. Research, Predoctoral and postdoctoral (MD and PhD) awards. No citizenship requirements.

European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO)— Short and long term fellowships for recent postdocs and citizens of EMBO member countries. All applications must involve either a laboratory of origin or a receiving institution from an EMBO member country.

European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Fellowships for Europeans to study cancer clinical trails at the EORTC Data Center in Brussels.

European Science Foundation— Limited number of postdoctoral fellowship programs for Europeans to study abroad in Medical Sciences, Physical and Engineering Sciences, and Life, Environmental and Earth Sciences. Especially Toxicology and Environmental Science Opportunities.

Fogarty International Center- --Three fellowship programs: one program supports basic research, behavioral and clinical scientists at the postdoctoral level who are committed to a career in international health research and would benefit from an additional period of mentored research as part of a strong, established collaboration between a U.S. sponsor and leading scientists at a developing country center of scientific excellence; one program provides opportunities for postdoctoral level U.S. scientists to conduct biomedical and behavioral sciences research at institutions in Japan; and the NIH Visiting Program provides support for scientists who wish to conduct research at NIH intramural laboratories.

Fulbright-See Council for International Exchange of Scholars— US Scholar Programs: lecturing, research and seminar opportunities in 140 countries for US faculty and professionals; Visiting Scholar Programs: for non-US faculty and professionals.

Grass Fellowships in Neuroscience— Fellowships for postdocs to do neuroscience related research at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole MA or fellowships for MDs with completed residency in neurology, neurosurgery or psychiatry to do patient-oriented research. All United States citizens, resident aliens, and foreign candidates with or able to obtain J-1 Visa's for the duration of the fellowship are eligible to participate in this program.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute— 5 general areas: Cell Bio, Genetics, Immunology, Neuroscience, Structural Bio. Two types of fellowships for foreign nationals. “International Program” – Foreign Nationals from Canada, Latin America and Eastern Europe to work in home country. General Fellowship program to work at participating university in US. Also, investigator awards for junior faculty. No citizenship requirements.

Human Frontier Science Program— long and short term fellowships and research grant awards in the area of brain function and biological functions through molecular biology approaches (genetics) for nationals of member countries (Most European, Japan and US).

INSERM- The French National Institute for Health and Medical Research. Supports short-term and long-term PD fellowships in France or other countries with established INSERM cooperation programs. Postdoctoral fellowships are granted by Inserm to train abroad, to young physicians, pharmacists, dentists or researchers, either French citizens or of EU members states residing in France, and having links with French public research.

Council for International Exchange of Scholars-see

International Agency for Research on Cancer— Part of the World Health Organization. They sponsor postdoctoral fellowships for individuals under 35 years old to conduct cancer research. No citizenship requirements and fellowships are tenable in any suitable institution in any country abroad.

International Brain Research Organization— Research Fellowships for neuroscientists from developing countries under the age of 45 to work one month to a year abroad. Travel grants for neuroscientists from developing countries for participation at international neuroscience meetings.

International Dyslexia Association-

IDA is an active participant in the support of research related to developmental dyslexia. One primary goal of IDA is to foster multidisciplinary research projects on dyslexia so that we can learn more about etiology, neural differences, early detection methods, and the value of simultaneous multisensory structured education approaches. Guidelines are currently under revision for the next funding period September 2002 through August 2003.

International Institute of Cellular and Molecular Pathology— Postdoctoral Fellowships generally for individuals younger than 33 to conduct Biomedical research in Belgium at the Institute of Cellular and Molecular Pathology. No citizenship requirements.

Irvington Institute for Medical Research—

Each year the Irvington Institute funds 12 postdoctoral fellows from the US and abroad to conduct research in immune system disorders for a three year fellowship period. No citizenship requirements.

Jackson Laboratory- The Jackson Laboratory has established a coordinated training program for postdoctoral fellows which provides broad understanding and experience in appropriate skills. The foundation of our training program is a one-to-one relationship between a trainee and his or her sponsor, with the trainee expected to work mainly in the laboratory of the sponsor. The Jackson Laboratory is an acknowledged world leader in mammalian genetics, maintaining extensive genetic resources and Shared Scientific Services to support research by over 30 faculty groups.

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science— Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research are awarded with an aim at advancing scientific research in Japan by encouraging creative and pioneering work across a spectrum of fields from the humanities and social sciences to the natural sciences. Grants are awarded for projects organized by individual researchers or groups of researchers engaged in basic research at universities or at research institutes. No citizenship requirements.

Max Kade Foundation— The Kade Foundation does not have a site on the web, but here is a page giving its address in German and an email contact link, in the context of info on a scholarship it offers to German scholars wishing to do scientific ormedical research in the United States.

Lalor Foundation- Grants to institutions for basic postdoctoral research in mammalian reproductive biology as related to the regulation of fertility. The individual nominated by the applicant institution for the postdoctoral fellowship for conduct of the research should have training and experience of at least equal to the Ph.D. or M.D. level and should not have a faculty appointment (i.e., Instructor, Lecturer, or higher). People who have held the doctoral degree for less than five years are preferred. No citizenship requirements.

Leukemia Society of America— Research sponsored by the Society on leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma that ranges from basic research utilizing the latest tools of genomics to studies that translate basic discoveries to new treatments; they support outstanding scientists at the forefront of blood-related cancer research at centers throughtout the world. No citizenship requirements.

Life Sciences Research Foundation— Three-year fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis to graduates of medical and graduate schools in the biological sciences holding M.D., Ph.D., D.V.M. or D.D.S. degrees. All U.S. citizens are eligible to apply with no geographic restriction on the laboratory of their choice. Foreign applicants will be eligible for study in U.S. laboratories.

March of Dimes- The March of Dimes funds programs to help prevent birth defects and treat babies born with them. Among these programs are education, community services, advocacy, and biomedical research. Some of this research involves laboratory animals. March of Dimes research grantees are selected by distinguished senior

scientists and physicians affiliated with major universities and other research institutions. The March of Dimes endorses guidelines established by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the ethical treatment of humans and animals in research.

James S. McDonnell Foundation— Funding research in brain cancer and cognitive neuroscience. The foundation encourages applications from early career scientists. No citizenship requirements.

Medical Research Council of Canada— Postdoctoral Fellowships provide research either in Canada or abroad. A candidate must hold, or be completing, either a PhD or a health professional degree (or equivalent) in a field such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, veterinary medicine, chiropractic, nursing or rehabilitative science. Canadian citizens and permanent residents may apply for awards to be held outside Canada if the required nature and calibre of training is not available in Canada. Candidates who are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents may apply only for awards to be held in Canada.

Muscular Dystrophy Association— Primarily Research Grants and some Postdoctoral Fellowships aimed at muscular dystrophies and related diseases of the neuromuscular system. No citizenship requirements.

National Association of Foreign Student Affairs— scholarships for students from abroad to study in the US and resources for US students studying abroad. No citizenship requirements.

National Italian American Foundation— Grants and scholarships available to individuals or organizations pursuing projects to promote, research, educate or preserve Italian-American culture, history or heritage.

National Medical Fellowships, Inc.— Fellowships for minority US citizens to research in US or abroad in variety of biomedical and health policy fields.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society— Research grants and fellowships for Multiple Sclerosis research. US citizenship is not required for applicants who desire training in the US. Applicants who plan on training in other countries must be US citizens.

National Science Foundation- The NSF awards approximately 1,000 new three-year Graduate Research Fellowships in March of each year. NSF Fellows are expected to contribute significantly to research, teaching, and industrial applications in science, mathematics, and engineering. Applicants must be US citizens or nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the US.

NATO Collaborative Programmes-

The object of the Science Fellowships sub-programme is to prepa for the long-term future by training young researchers. Science fellowships provide opportunities for scientists of NATO's Partner countries to pursue their research work or continue their training in a NATO country, and vice-versa. There are a limited number of fellowships available in some countries for NATO-country scientists to study in another NATO country.

Parkinson’s Disease Foundation— Research and Postdoctoral Fellowship awards for research in Parkinson. No citizenship requirements but research must be conducted in the US.

Population Council— Postdoctoral Fellowships in reproductive physiology, infertility and contraception or in social sciences: population studies, demography, etc. No citizenship requirements.

Prevent Blindness America— Research grants and fellowships for researchers looking for possible treatments of and/or cures for eye disorders and diseases. No citizenship requirements.

Roche Research Foundation— Funding for researchers and clinicians to visit Swiss institutions in order to collaborate on scientific projects or the development of new techniques or clinical treatments in the areas of biology, chemistry and medicine. No citizenship requirements.

Rockefeller Foundation— International Health Research Awards to facilitate global health research. Awarded not to individuals but partnerships of institutions from 2nd and 3rd world countries.

Searle Scholars Program- Applicants for year 2002 awards will be expected to be pursuing independent research careers in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences. Candidates should have begun their first appointment at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2000 and therefore be in their first or second year. This appointment must be a tenure-track position, and must be in an academic department of an invited, degree-granting institution.

Sigma Delta Epsilon Graduate Women in Science— Postdoctoral fellowship to women researchers in natural, biological and chemical sciences. No citizenship requirements.

Smith & Nephew Foundation— The Foundation offers awards to individuals in the medical and nursing professions who wish to undertake postgraduate research with the objective of improving clinical practice in medicine, surgery, nursing and midwifery in the United Kingdom.

Swiss National Science Foundation- The Swiss National Science Foundation fosters young scientific talent with a wide range of fellowships and grants, the principal among these being fellowships for prospective and advanced researchers. Fellowships are primarily awarded for periods of training and further education

abroad. Prospective researchers must be no older than 33 when the fellowship starts, advanced researchers no older than 35. The Marie Heim-Vögtlin grants enable young well-qualified women biologists, doctors, mathematicians and natural scientists to resume their careers after interrupting or reducing their research work to raise a family.

Developed Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South.

U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation— Promotes scientific and technical collaboration between the US and countries of the Former Soviet Union. One-time short term travel grants to Former Soviet Union individuals to participate in visits to US for-profit companies or in US commercial-oriented scientific meetings. The travel grants program is open to representatives of US for-profit companies in very limited circumstances.

Helen Hay Whitney Foundation— Supports early postdoctoral research training in all basic biomedical sciences. Candidates must be living in North America in order to be eligible. United States citizenship is not a requirement, but fellowships to resident non-citizens are awarded only for training in this country. Citizens may train abroad.

Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Foundation Cancer Research Fund

Fellowships for basic and physician scientists to undergo cancer research. Investigator awards for junior (less than three years) faculty. No citizenship requirements. Foreign Nationals must study in US.

World Health Organization—

International Policy and Development

Academy for Educational Development— in partnership with organizations around the globe to address human development needs, i.e. policy, healthcare, economic growth, sustainable development, education, etc. A few of the partnered organizations offer training or fellowship opportunities abroad.

American Research Institute in Turkey- ARIT directly supports and administers programs of fellowships for scholarly research and for language study in Turkey for US-based scholars and graduate students.

Asia Foundation— The Asia Foundation undertakes grant making with organizations as a collaborative process of problem identification and strategic planning within our four areas of programming interest: governance & law, women’s development, community development, economic development. Most of the foundations’ grants are made to organizations in Asia; no individual grants.

The Commonwealth Fund— The Harkness Fellowship for Australian, UK or New Zealand citizen to study health care delivery or health policy in US, the Ian Axford Fellowships in Public Policy give outstanding mid-career American professionals an opportunity to study, travel, and gain practical experience in public policy in New Zealand, Atlantic Fellowship for US citizens to study health policy in UK.

The CRDF Travel Grants Program- The CRDF Travel Grants Program provides short-term travel support to encourage the development of new industrial R&D collaborations between scientists and engineers in the former Soviet Union and for-profit companies in the United States. Applicants must be scientists or engineers presently employed and residing in countries of the former Soviet Union.

The Eurasia Foundation— Funds grants within the broad scope of economic reform and democratic institution-building in the 12 new independent states of the former USSR.

German Academic Exchange Service- Enables Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.Ds to carry out dissertation or post-doctoral research at libraries, archives, institutes or laboratories in Germany for a period of one to six months between Feb. 1, 2002 and July 31, 2001. In general, Ph.D.s (up to 2 years after the degrees) not older than 35 and Ph.D. candidates not older than 32 may apply. Applicants should possess knowledge of the German language commensurate with the demands of their research projects.

International Foundation for Science— Postdoctoral fellowships for citizens of developing countries to do research in developing countries on Aquatic Resources, Animal Production, Crop Science, Forestry, Food Science, Rural Technology, and Environmental Sciences.

International Research and Exchange Board (IREX)— Postdoctoral and Predoctoral research fellowships to study policy or development in Eastern Europe, the New Independent States , the Near East and Asia. Cross-disciplinary studies strongly encouraged to apply. Ron Brown Fellowship Program provides for postdocs and young professionals from Central and Eastern Europe to study in US in wide variety of policy, administration and development fields.

Japan Foundation –Center for Global Partnership— To promote collaboration between Japan and the United States with the goal of fulfilling shared global responsibilities and contributing to improvements in the world's welfare; As a general rule, CGP supports projects that are run collaboratively by people or organizations in both Japan and the United States. Projects may involve individuals and organizations from other nations as well, as long as the projects focus primarily on promoting U.S.-Japan cooperation.

The Woodrow Wilson Center— Postdoctoral Fellowships via the WWNFF in humanities, women’s studies, public policy and some opportunities for FN’s to do research in US.

All Academic Disciplines

African American Institute— ATLAS coordinates a range of activities in the U.S. and abroad that focus on developing leadership skills, enabling participants to apply their knowledge to development issues upon their return home. By targeting professionals in both the private and public sectors, ATLAS strengthens the capacity of institutions to promote sustainable development.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation- Ten German Chancellor Scholarships are awarded annually to highly motivated individuals in the private, public, not-for-profit, cultural and academic sectors. The program sponsors individuals who demonstrate the potential to strengthen ties between Germany and the United States through their profession or studies.

American Council of Learned Societies— The American Council of Learned Societies is a private non-profit federation of sixty-four national scholarly organizations. In cooperation with other private organizations, the ACLS administers the Vietnam Fulbright Program, which encompasses a fellowship program for Vietnamese scholars and the Fulbright EconomicsTeaching Program in Ho Chi Minh City.

American-Scandinavian Foundation—- Exchange: US Citizens to research in Scandinavia or Foreign National applicants from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden to research in US.

Association for International Practical Training— The Career Development program allows Foreign National professionals or recent graduates from any field to train in the United States. Foreign Nationals must be from any country with which the United States has diplomatic relations.

John Simon Guggenheim— The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation provides fellowships for advanced professionals in all fields (natural sciences,

social sciences, humanities, creative arts) except the performing arts. Fellowships are not available for students. The Foundation only supports individuals. The Foundation selects its Fellows on the basis of two separate competitions, one for the United States and Canada, the other for Latin America and the Caribbean.

W. K. Kellogg Foundation— Since the Foundation was established in 1930, its United States programming has centered on health, education, and agriculture. Programming activities in Latin America and the Caribbean are based on a vision of strong democratic societies that promote justice, equity, and equal access to opportunities; responsible and sustainable use of resources; and, individual and collective behavior based on responsibility and cooperation.

Volkswagen Foundation-

The Volkswagen Foundation is a non-profit-making foundation established under private law based in Hannover. Its objective is to support science, the humanities and technology in research and university teaching.
