All World of Inquiry 7th grade students are expected to complete two summer reading assignments. The first is an assigned reading and the other is an independent read from the list provided to you.

Summer reading novels may be checked out of the library as well as purchased new or used. Be prompt in getting a copy of the novel in order to complete your reading and assignments before returning to school in the September.

|Pre-reading Prompt for Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison |

Before you read, Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison, write about the how we are constantly replacing old things in our lives for new things. You may think of technology or any other items you see everyday people replacing for something newer and better. Compare and contrast how this process of replacing old with new can be both positive and negative.

Directions: As you read the book, keep notes to help you track the timeline of events that occur throughout this novel. It is important for you to be able to identify details as you are reading. You must compile at least 20 events in your timeline. Your notes may look something like this:

1) Mary Jemison was born in 1743 to her parents, Thomas and Jane Erwin Jemison. She was born on a ship as they were immigrating to America.

2) They arrived in Philadelphia and settled in Adams County, PA.

3) April 5, 1758- With the exception of the two oldest boys, who escaped, everyone in Mary’s family was captured by Indians. The following day all were massacred except Mary.

Vocabulary – Directions: For each vocabulary word, create a triple column worksheet as outlined below. You must find at least 20 vocabulary words.

1st column: Vocabulary word along with your personal meaning of the word

2nd column: Dictionary definition (if the definition is simply the root word (ie: truncated – truncate), you must look up the root word for the original definition; if there is more than one definition, use the appropriate definition based on the context of the text). Next to the definition include a SYNONYM and an ANTONYM.

3rd column: create a clue to help you commit this word to memory

|After Reading Assignment for Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison |

Directions: Once you have completed reading, Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison, create a timeline of events. You must include pictures as well. The pictures can be hand drawn or computer printouts, but it must look professional and clean. Basically, you need to use color and images to make your timeline standout. These will be displayed when we return, so make sure you are making a good first impression about your attention to detail and your ability to finish a nice product. You must use a minimum of 10 events in your timeline.

Directions: Select an independent reading book from the list options provided to you. After completing approximately 20-25 minutes of Independent Reading, please fulfill one of the following tasks. This is actively engaging you with your reading. You may only complete each task one time. Each written entry should be at least 8-10 sentences. Please include the date, which entry you are doing and how many pages you read as a heading for your journal entry. You must complete at least 7 entries before returning to school in September.
