Introduction

This program is designed to improve the knowledge base of healthcare professionals providing care for patients with metabolic syndrome/pre-diabetes and diabetes mellitus in type 1 and 2 and gestational diabetes in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. Evidence-based practice guidelines that impact glucose management in a variety of settings, including medication options, healthy eating, exercise, and dental health will be presented.

Program Goals:

To provide each healthcare provider attending with information regarding current diabetes care standards, with emphasis on new approaches in detection and prevention, management of blood glucose both in the inpatient and outpatient settings, and the impact of new technology on patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Program Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

• Identify the current standards for screening and treatment of metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes, and diabetes.

• List the risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome and pre-diabetes

• State how knowledge gained on early intervention of pre-diabetes will aid patient interactions.

• Identify current standards of diabetes screening, diagnosis and treatment.

• Compare/contrast the benefits and risks of tight control of blood glucose both inpatient and outpatient.

• Identify the benefits and risks of the various oral and injectable medications used to control blood glucose.

• State advanced carb counting concepts and skills that partner with intensification of an insulin regimen.

• State how to calculate insulin to carb needs for advanced blood glucose management.

• State the effect of exercise on blood glucose control in type 1 diabetes.

• Identify specific precautions to address with exercise in type 1 diabetes.

• Outline strategies for maintaining glucose control during intensive exercise.

• Describe the signs and symptoms of problems with mouth and teeth that may be associated with increased risk of developing diabetes.

• Explain the risk of diabetes and impact on glucose control with the status of dental/oral health care.

• Identify resource available to diagnose and treat problems of the mouth and teeth to facilitate improved blood glucose in a patient with oral problems and diabetes.
