ACC BIOTECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENTProgressive Discipline PolicyProgram ProgressionIn order to successfully progress through the ACC Biotechnology Program, the student must:Complete pre-requisite courses before progressing in the program.Be enrolled in (or have previously completed) co-requisite courses in the discipline at the same timeWithdrawal from any co-requisite course in the discipline prior to the college official withdrawal date may result in withdrawal form all other discipline-specific co-requisite courses regardless of the current grade in the course.Students who withdraw from a general education co-requisite course during the semester may be ineligible for progression to the next semester until that course is completed.Achieve a minimum grade of “C” in all biotechnology courses in the degree plan.Satisfactorily meet course goals and objectivesConduct themselves in an ethical, and professional manner with safe lab practicesNot participate in academic dishonestyProgressive DisciplineFaculty is committed to assisting students to be successful in the program. Therefore, biotechnology students who are not meeting course objectives and/or not conducting themselves in a professional and ethical manner (this includes academic dishonesty) will be apprised of their performance status using the progressive discipline process. This procedure progresses throughout the program, not in each individual course. Any warnings and/or conferences will be kept in the student’s file. Step 1:WarningThe instructor provides the student with a verbal and written warning which includes specifics to the issue and feedback on how to remedy the situation. It is the goal of the program to help get the student back on track to academic success. The instructor counsels the student regarding criteria for successful completion of the course and makes recommendations for improvement. Recommendations may include but are not limited to – remediation by faculty, utilization of peer study groups, tutors, computer-assisted instruction, and assistance from ACC counselors. At the discretion of the instructor, and depending on the situation, this step may be skipped and a conference completed. This warning will be included in the student’s file. Step 2: ConferenceThe student meets with the instructor in a formal conference to review the performance deficit. At the instructor’s discretion, or student request, this conference may include the Biotechnology Program Department Chair. A written report will identify specific course or program objectives not met. A remediation contract including deadlines for completion will be developed to correct the deficit so the student can successfully progress through the program. If at any time the student does not comply with all terms outlined in the conference report, the student may be placed on probation or withdrawn from the program, if applicable. This report will be kept in the student’s file. Step 3:WithdrawalWithdrawal may be implemented for, but no limited to, the following behaviors:Consistent academic dishonestyunsatisfactory course or internship performanceunethical, unprofessional behavior, and/or unsafe lab practicesrefusal to participate with a procedurebehavior which compromises academic or industrial affiliations of the programThe student meets with the instructor and department chair. An ACC counselor may be asked to assist in representing the student. The faculty will fill out a withdrawal form for the class. A student who is on Step 3 for unsafe or unprofessional conduct will be withdrawn from the program. If the occurrence is past the official college date for withdrawal from a course, the student will receive a performance grade of “F” for failure or “U” for unsatisfactory.Special Circumstances:Some situations do not allow for the progressive discipline process due to the severity of nature or the timing of their occurrence. Incidents of this nature may require the student to be immediately placed on probation or withdrawn from the program. Examples of these include, but are not limited to:violations of industrial confidentialityacademic dishonestyfalsification of documentationunprofessional behavior that seriously jeopardizes student, staff, or internship mentor’s safetyNOTE: If the occurrence is past the official college date for withdrawal from a course, the student will receive a performance grade of “F” for failure or “U” for unsatisfactory. The withdrawing student must meet with the course instructor and/or department chair to complete all exit forms and have an Exit Meeting within two weeks of the withdrawal.
