Grading the Northern New York Dairy Industry

Grading the Northern New York Dairy Industry

(Northern New York’s Milk Production –

Is There Unexplored Potential)

Mark Stephenson, Ph.D

Cornell Program on Dairy Markets & Policy

• A study on expanding the milk supply in Northern New York

o Needed to help existing dairy plants maintain national competitiveness

o Focuses on the extent to which the fixed resources of land and climate are being used in the production of milk and considers the possibilities of growth in the region

“Farms and plants will either prosper together or stagnate together.

It’s not “us versus them”.

• Peter Woodbury, a soil scientist, Cornell University – Used biophysical spatial analysis to locate and quantify lands suitable for sustainable biomass production from corn, soybean, improved forage, old field vegetation and trees. New York State is approximately 60% forest and currently 20% of the states land is used for cropping. There is approximately 15% of the states land that could be used for growing crops.

Northern New York has more potential than other parts of the state. There is land that has the capacity to grow 80 bushels of corn or more that is not being utilized. Most of this land is in Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties.
