ACCESS Listserv conversation about Infant and Toddler Resources

January 27, 2011

I have always used the videos from The Program for Infant/Toddler Caregivers from WestEd the California Dept. of Education for the I/T course. They are EXCELLENT!

I absolutely agree about the PITC materials.  The DVDs are great and there are other resources on the website including ideas for in class learning experiences for students.  I use the following books.  They are readable and nicely complement the PITC philosophy.  We need this stuff to promote high quality Infant-Toddler caregiving!

• J. Gonzalez-Mena & D. Widmeyer Eyer, Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers with the Caregivers Companion  Eighth Edition, McGraw-Hill .  This textbook also has an online learning center that supplements the text at:  itc8e

• Gonzalez-Mena, Janet  Diversity in Early Care and Education: Honoring Differences  Fourth Edition, McGraw-Hill 2004.

I teach a class online called Working with Infants and Toddlers in Inclusive Settings. I rely heavily on the outstanding Special Quest materials -- free!!!

Another excellent (free!) resource is the CSEFEL materials:

The Zero to Three website is a goldmine as well:

I second (third? fourth?) the endorsement of WestEd materials, Gonzalez-Mena books, and ITERS.

I have used both the WestEd materials (and went through the training about 10 years ago) as well as the Endless Opportunities book.   Also use Infant and Toddler Development and Responsive Program Planning (by the same author).  There is some good stuff in the Creative Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers as well.  I'm having good luck finding free video clips on YouTube as well.

Infant/Toddler Development--We use the first section of Berk--which is also used for our Growth and development course, we also use Rethinking the Brain by Rima Shore from Families and Work Institute and Honig's book: Secure Relationships--it seems like a lot of texts but Berk is required for all students so it is a repeat and the other two work well with our objectives. There are wonderful videos/DVD from BSU-

If you are interested, I am also sending this to Resa Matlock from BSU who handles there.

Tell me about the you tube materials.  While I can find adult talking heads disucssing infant-toddler development, it's hard top find clips of infants and/or toddlers themselves, in order illustrate developmental milestones, etc.

Hi Sandy,

I have had less luck finding good video clips of classrooms with caregivers and infants.  Janet Gonzalez-Mena has a DVD that accompanies her book that has some good video clips, although they are quite old.

I have used several books over the years and I’m familiar with everything that has been mentioned-all good choices! Currently I’m using Bambini: the Italian Approach to Infant/Toddler Care (Teachers College Press) and I supplement it with articles from Zero to Three, Young Children, etc.

i use any materials created and supported by margie carter and deb curtis...always use dap, 3rd. ed. as a reference, and use information and strategies in beginnings in childcare infor exchange...and of course...zero to three....pretty standard stuff--hope it helps...j. butler

We use Infants, Toddlers & Caregivers by Gonzalez-Mena (with Caregiver Companion book), along with Developmental Profiles by Allen & Marotz, which is also used in the Child Development course.  I use many links (in my online course) to PITC materials, and any of the videos that fits into the course topics.  I’ve also used the Berk text, but changed to ITC since it is more directed to early childhood education and programs.  I also love the Diversity series of DVDs done by Gonzalez-Mena.  They are a great spark to discussion, especially Diversity & Contrasting Perspectives.

I use many links to Zero to Three materials – they are wonderful!  I like to add in a video on Magda Gerber from Resources for Infant Educarers – Seeing Infants with New Eyes, or On Their Own with Our Help.

This has been a great sharing -  Thanks everyone!

I personally know and work with the Child Care Collection folks and they are great, I would recommend them. I use infant/Toddler videos for my infant/toddler course and the students have greatly appreciated them.
