Teacher Description

Mrs. Johnson attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah on a full gymnastics scholarship. She earned a Bachelor in Science Degree in Physical Education/Exercise Science. After graduating from Utah State, she decided to become a teacher and attended Ottawa University in Phoenix, Arizona to earn her teaching certification. She has taught middle school for fifteen years. Mrs. Johnson is currently working on a Masters in Health Education. Outside of teaching, she enjoys spending time with her family, backpacking/hiking, mountain biking, and photography.

Course Description 7th Grade Life Science

Students will use three dimensions of science to master the performance expectations from the Next Generation Science Standards. The three dimensions of science are: Disciplinary Core Ideas, Crosscutting Concepts, and Scientific and Engineering Practices. The core ideas students will explore in middle school science are Physical, Life, Earth/Space, Engineering, Technology, and Application Sciences. Students will use scientific and engineering practices to investigate a proposed question, concept, or problem. This type of inquiry will require students to formulate questions, explore hypotheses, design experiments, collect data, and share explanations and conclusions. Students will then connect scientific concepts by considering patterns, cause and effect, and making real world connections.

Suggested Materials (from school supply list)

( 70 -100 page spiral notebook – Students will be given a notebook.

( Loose - leaf paper for homework

( Pocket Folder or 3 ring binder for handouts, graded papers

( Plenty of pencils and black or blue ink pens

( Red pen or pencil for grading

( Highlighter

( Colored pencils, crayons or markers

( Glue Sticks or scotch tape

( Standard/ Metric Ruler

( Small scissors

Grades

Grades will be based on total points. Point values will be determined based on the length and difficulty of assignments. Students will earn two grades. See break down below.

Overall Grade 100%

Assessments/Tests 40%

Participation/Classwork 45%

Practice/Homework 15%

Behavior 100%

Citizenship 10 points/day

(On task, On time, Prepared with all materials, Class Participation)

Grading Scale

90 – 100 A

80 – 89 B

70 –79 C

60 – 69 D

0– 59 F

Homework & Assignments

Students will do all homework & in-class assignments to help learn the skills being taught in class. Assignments will be posted in class for two weeks. If a student is absent, it is the student's responsibility to pick up all make-up work, and make-up any test or quiz missed. Absent students will be given the opportunity to turn in all make-up work and receive full credit, as long as the assignment is posted in the classroom.  Once the assignment is removed from the wall calendar, a loss of credit will result. All make up work can be found in the classroom. Parents are encouraged to check agenda books for daily assignments, as well as Infinite Campus to monitor student’s progress.

Class Website

A class website will also be available with weekly assignments, dates to remember, and other resources. Check it out at

Interactive Notebook

Students will be required to keep an interactive science notebook. The goal of the interactive science notebook is to increase student thinking and achievement. It gives students an organized way to make connections to prior knowledge and deepen their thinking skills. The notebook allows the students to develop an understanding about science concepts and how they connect to the world around them. The end result is a notebook that contains student’s work for the entire year and shows the content learned and the reflective knowledge gained. Students will set up their interactive notebook during the first week of school. It will be the student’s responsibility to keep a well-organized notebook that follows the correct format, and shows the student’s personal thinking and creativity on the topics learned. Notebooks will be graded quarterly.

No Name, No Grade

Students must write their name on all papers that will be turned in for a grade.  Failure to do so will result in a loss of full credit on that assignment. All assignments should have the appropriate heading – first and last name, date, period, and title of assignment in the upper left hand corner of paper.

Complete Sentences

Answer all written questions with a complete sentence.

Book

Students will be assigned a science book that they will bring to class EVERYDAY. Students will be responsible for any lost or damaged books.
