Explanatory Notes

1. This achievement standard is derived from Level 7 achievement objectives from Social Studies in the New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 1997 and Tikanga ā Iwi i Roto i te Marautanga o Aotearoa, Te Pou Taki Kōrero, Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, 2000.

2. Assessment will be consistent with the settings, perspectives and essential learning about New Zealand society, defined in the Social Studies in the New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 1997 and Tikanga ā Iwi i Roto i te Marautanga o Aotearoa, Te Pou Taki Kōrero, Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, 2000.

3. In assessment activities, perspectives are limited to:

• Māori perspectives

• bicultural perspectives

• multicultural perspectives

• gender perspectives

• perspectives on current issues

• perspectives on the future.

4. People refers to individuals and/or groups.

5. Influence refers to identifiable change(s) and/or their consequence(s) for society; these may be positive and/or negative, short-term and/or long-term.

6. How people’s actions influence society to bring about change refers to the use of broad strategies and processes.

7. Society refers to the broader human society, within which there are varieties of discrete societies.

8. Terms:

• Describe means to give an account through the use of social studies concepts and perspectives.

• Explain means to give an account, supported with reasons, through the use of social studies concepts and perspectives.

• In depth means the reasons and social studies concepts and perspectives are linked, and supported with accurate and detailed supporting evidence.

Quality Assurance

1. Providers and Industry Training Organisations must have been granted consent to assess by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against achievement standards.

2. Organisations with consent to assess and Industry Training Organisations assessing against achievement standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those achievement standards.
