Background Information:

Background Information:

Density can be calculated using the formula D=Mass/Volume. Volume of an object can easily be found using a graduated cylinder. To find the mass of the object you must first find the mass of the object and the graduated cylinder together. To find the mass of the object alone, subtract the mass of the graduated cylinder from the mass of the graduated cylinder with the object. Most objects have different densities, which will be very SMALL!

Purpose:

In this lab you will calculate the density of multiple objects (8-12). Discuss with your partner what you might expect each of the densities to be, and why.

Materials:

Balance, Graduated Cylinder, Objects, Water, Calculator

Hypothesis-Theory:

Come up with your own Hypothesis, and Write it down on your Paper.

Procedure:

1) Using the balance, record the mass of your first object from the bag.

2) Fill the graduated cylinder and record. The volume should be at least above 30mL.

3) Place the same object that you recorded its mass for into the graduated cylinder. The water should rise, record the final volume. If it is hard to tell how much the water has risen, make and educated prediction.

4) Calculate the density for each object using the formula given in your background information.

Analysis: Create Chart on your own paper!

Conclusion Question:

1. Conclude what you did in this lab; please include something about your analysis.

2. You are to create an appropriate graph modeling all of your objects and their density.

3. List the objects from the densest to least.

4. What could be some errors in your experiment?

5. Do you believe that all objects that are the same (Ex. Pennies), have the same density? Explain.
