Objective: Students will review and develop their main points, review statement, supportive PowerPoint presentation and informative speech.
Main Points and Preview Statements Worksheet
Things to avoid in main points
1. Too much information to cover in one 4 - 6 minute speech
2. A main point could be answered in a sentence (remember you need to develop the main point with support techniques.)
3. Main points don’t really go together
4. Main point is just a list ex. A list of 13 different careers for Barbie: Flight attendant Barbie, Doctor Barbie, Cowgirl Barbie
Things to do in preview statements:
1. Make sure all of the main points are mention
2. It should be in a complete sentence.
3. Main points should be mentioned in the order you’ll cover them in the speech
4. The preview sentence should include the audience members ex. We’ll examine, We’ll explore.
Critique the following main points and preview statements.
1. Topic: History of shoes
Main points:
• Where it originated
• Different brands and styles
• How they’ve improved
Preview Statement: In this speech we will talk about shoes and how they’ve originated, how they’ve improved and different brands or styles.
2. Topic: Alcatraz
Main points:
• How/when was it built
• Who stayed there and for what
• How it is inescapable
Preview statement: Today we are going to examine how and when Alcatraz was built, who stayed there and for what and how it was inescapable.
3. Topic: Alcatraz
Main points:
• What year it opened
• Why they chose the location
• What famous criminals went there
Preview Statement: Today we’ll talk about what year Alcatraz opened, whey they chose the location, and what famous criminals went there.
4. Topic: Mustang convertibles
Main points:
• price differences
• styles
• how they’re made
Preview statement: In my speech I will discuss the difference in mustang convertibles from the 1960s to today.
5. Topic Mustang convertibles
Main points:
• style appearance over the years
• colors they came in
• how they’re going back to an older model with a twist of the future
Preview statement: Today I will explain the model structures from then and now, the color changes, and how they came out with a new car in a jazzed up old model.
6. Topic: Alopecia
Main points:
• What is alopecia
• What causes it
• What treatments are available
Preview Statement: Today I’ll tell you about alopecia, what it is, what causes it and what treatments are available.

Things to Consider
• If you are not ready to go on your assigned day, a 20% point deduction will be taken.
• If you are absent on the day of your speech, you must bring a note from your parent which explains why you were absent. Turn it in the next day of class.
Be prepared to give your speech the next day you have class.
• Unexcused absences will result in a zero for the speech.
Time Limit: 4 – 6 minutes.
Deductions for being under time: 01 – 30 seconds 2 points,
31 – 60 seconds 5 points,
1:01 -1:30 minutes 7 points,
1:30 – 2:00 minutes 10 points,
Over 3 minutes – at the teacher’s discretion
Deductions for being over time: I’ll give you a 30 second grace period
31 – 60 seconds 2 points
1 – 2 minutes 5 points
2:01 – 3 minutes 7 points
Over three minutes – at the teacher’s discretion

Remember – you cannot use a manuscript for this speech. I will ask to see your outline or notes before you speak, and if you have a manuscript, you will not be able to use it.
