Illinois State Board of Education is recommending between 20-60 minutes of academic work each day for students ages 3-5. My hope is that you would pick a few activities from the learning at home section to complete with your child each day. Have your child match the lowercase letters (bees) with the uppercase letters (flowers)Math1) Ladybug Counting-roll die and have your child count that many dots onto the caterpillar Materials: a paper ladybug (created night before with a red body and black head), a die or number cards, small black circles2) Bug Counting Book--print off the paper book, cut the papers in half and staple to create a small book. -Help your child read each number and draw the matching quantity of bugs on each page. Your child can then color the book. Fine Motor/Sensory1) Bug Rescue-put plastic bugs (or cotton balls) at bottom of shoe box or empty container. Tape yarn or string like a web over the top of box. Have your child use tweezers or chop sticks to remove bugs2) Sensory Bin--Washing Objects: fill container with water and dish soap, shells or rocks, old toothbrush-Hunting for Toys: fill container with shaving cream, put small toys inside, child finds toys with fingersArt 1) Nature Bugs- Materials-leaves, pine cones, grass from outside, glue or tape, markers, pipe cleaners2) Fingerprint Bugs- Materials-paper, paint or stamp pad, markersMovement1) Yoga for Kids video: HYPERLINK "" ) Flight of the Bumblebee--find “The Flight of the Bumblebee” on youtube (any instrument) and have your child move and dance to the fast rhythm.-find slow, relaxing music on youtube and play-make sure to point out the slowness of this music, encourage your child to move slowlyScience1) Go on a nature walk around neighborhood or backyard-point out & discuss all living things (plants, animals), especially bugs-help your child describe the living things with words by asking questions: *”What color is that ____?” *”Tell me what you see” *”What do you think that feels like? Why?” *”I notice that the purple flower is leaning over. What do you notice?”2) Build a Bug Hotel-You can help your child build a Bug Hotel using recyclable and nature items: craft sticks, empty 2 liter bottles, scratch paper, pinecones, flowers, etc. Make sure to make each section separate to provide individual homes for different species of bugs.
