WORD PROCESSING VOCABULARY WORDS

1. Word Processing – software used to create and edit text documents such as letters, memos, reports and publications

2. Word Wrap – when you are typing and the cursor jumps to the next line when the line you are currently typing on becomes full

3. Alignment – the orientation of the lines of a paragraph with respect to the margins.

4. Editing – making modifications to an existing document

5. Font Style– adds emphasis to a font: bold, italic and underline

6. Autocorrect – A word feature that automatically corrects common spelling errors as you type

7. Highlight – to display text in different colors than the surrounding text

8. Toggle – switch back and forth between two features

9. Insert Mode– The method of operation used for inserting new text within existing text in a document. Insert mode is the default

10. Overtype Mode – the method of operation used to replace existing text in a document with new text.

11. Undo – the command for reversing previous action

12. Redo – the command for reversing the undo command

13. Symbol – A character that is not included on keyboard

14. Insertion Point – the flashing vertical line that indicates where the next action will occur

15. Read only - A mode of operation in which revisions cannot be saved in the original document

16. Document properties – Categories of information about a document

17. Clipboard – a temporary storage area that can hold up to twelve selections at a time

18. Drag and drop editing – The action of using a mouse to drag a selection from its original location and drop in a new location

19. Horizontal Alignment – The position of text in relation to the left and right page margins

20. Vertical Alignment – The position of text in relation to the top and bottom page margins.

21. Font – a complete set of characters in a specific face, style and size

22. Font Face– the character design of a font set

23. Serif- a font face that has curved or extended edges.

24. Sans Serif – a font face that has straight edges

25. Script– A font fact that looks like handwriting

26. Font Effect – Formatting features used to enhance or emphasize text.

27. Bullet – A dot or symbol that marks an important line of information or designates items in a list.

28. Sort – To organize items in a specific order

29. PDF - A“portable document format” created by Adobe’s Acrobat program. This form was designed so that files could be shared between platforms (PC vs. MAC) and could be open and read by users who did not have the program that crated the file.
