December 3, 2012Dear Sir or Madam:My name is David Waterhouse and I am the Project Lead for this year’s Diversity STEM Essay Contest. I want to thank you for your interest in this year’s Contest thus far. We have spent a lot of time working and preparing to bring a rewarding experience to you and your students. We have had a tremendous response thus far, and are now ready for the next stage of the contest where we release the essay prompts. The students should pick one of the prompts included on the attached page. The following guidelines should be observed when writing the essay:Title Page (Must include student’s name, school, and grade)Bibliography, at least 1 source in MLA or APA formatLength: Middle School – 400 to 600 words, High School – 500 to 700 wordsDouble SpacedPlagiarism will result in automatic eliminationThese prompts have been designed to get students thinking about diversity and how it impacts the world around them. Having a discussion in class to get ideas bubbling would be a great way to kick-start the contest. These prompts are open-ended and it is important that the students explore the topics introspectively in addition to any research they perform. Many may not have had much exposure to thinking about diversity or STEM, but we hope that with your help we can open a door to exploration for them. Please note the following dates:Essays due to BoeingNo later than March 1st, 2013Notification of winnersStarting April 19th, 2013Awards CeremonyTo be announced Essays should be sent to:David WaterhouseRe: Essay Contest – (Boeing Focal’s Name)The Boeing CompanyRt 291 & Stewart Ave MC P23-03Ridley Park, PA 19078Thank you for your time and efforts in exploring these topics with your students.
