Introduction

At first: Excuse me, because my English is not so good. But I think , that’s why my words are more easy.

The most of programs I am using are in German language. You must have a little pinch of fantasy. Thank you !

During my study at the Martin-Luther university of Halle I learnt to know some mongolian students. Till today there are friendly relatationships. So I was in Mongolia in 1985, in 1994 and in 1995. Any times it was necessary to correspond in Mongolian language. The Mongolian language uses cyrillic letters with two special letters. I have got a program from the Ikh Buren Company in Ulaan Baator. With this program I could write Mongolian letters in programs (Write or Word) which support to select fonts.

Later I have changed to Windows 95 and this little program didn’t work correctly. So I was looking for another program to use with Windows 95.

By asking in a News Group I got a tip about the program WXKBD21 by

Peter Szászvári () from Hungary. At this time you can get a further version calles KEYS+ (32 Bit)

The requirements to write in Mongolian

1 Operating System

As operating system are Windows 3.1x, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 [1]. The 16 Bit Version WXKBD21 is to be used for Windows 3.1x to Windows 95. KEYS+ (32 Bit) is for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.

2 What else is needed ?

1 Keyboard Remapper

Of course you need one of the above listed programs – WXKBD21 or Keys+ (32 Bit).

WXKBD21 ( ) is Freeware. But please read the Help File of this program.

Keys+ (32 Bit) () is Shareware. The author of the program needs a little fee to continue his project.

2 Mongolian Font

To represent Mongolian letters on the display you need a matching font. The todays Mongolian letters are origin from cyrillic letters. (There are own old Mongolian letters.) In case of the phonetics of the Mongolian language there are two special letters. Since Mongolia is present in the World Wide Web () there is an quasi standard font you can dowload from .

3 Keyboard Layout

Please notify that the below listed table is only to be displayed with installed Mongolian font. This will be described in chapter 3.

Installation of the needed programs and files

1 Quickinstallation

You ca use the following explaint program with Windows 3.1x, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. The  program MGLKEY16.EXE is to be used with Windows 3.1x to Windows 95. MGLKEY32.EXE is created for use with Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.

The above listed install files include the Mongolian Font.

The mongolian keyboard remapper will installed by launching one of the above install files. No other steps are requested.

2 Installation of the Mongolian font

When you download the Mongolian font you get the file MONFONT.ZIP. This file you must expand to a separat folder (if this is possible). There are some Freeware Unzipper. Then you must install this font into Windows. How ? I think you must know by yourself. If this was successfully you can select one of the following fonts in WRITE (Windows 3.1x) or WORDPAD (WINDOWS 95/ NT 4.0:

„NEWTONCTT“, CrrCTT“ or others with the CTT end.

3 Installation of the keyboard remapper

Both programs (WXKBD21 and KEYS+) are compressed in the ZIP format. At first you must expand them. The best would be to expand the programs to the folder from which they will be started. The installation of both programs is equal. So I only will explain the installation of KEYS+.

Expand the file WXKBD.ZIP to the folder C:\KBD\41. In the next step you must create a link at the desktop or to START/PROGRAMS. To complete the installation you must the downloaded INI file (KEYS32.INI for KEYS+ or WXKBD.INI for WXKBD21) to the C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT folder. Now the keyboard remappers are ready for use.

Working with WXKBD21 and KEYS+

1 Use with Word and WordPad

It’s easy:

Start one of the keyboard remappers and change with the hot key „CTRL“ + „+“ to the Mongolian keyboard layout, select one of the Mongolian fonts and you are able to type in Mongolian letters not only in Word or WordPad. In all applications where you can select a font.

„CTRL“ + „-„ changes back to your own language. Only if you want to do some actions in the menu bar, change back to your keyboard layout (english).

2 Write E-Mails

By this way it is also possible to write E-Mails. The receiver also must have installed the Mongolian font. In any cases I have the problem that I can not read the received E-Mails. Then I mark and cut the text and paste it to WordPad .f.i..

1 Outlook 98

If you use Word 97 as the E-Mail Editor then all is like in chapter 4.1 explained.

Also the options „Outlook Rich Text“, Plain Text or even „HTML“ give you the possibility to choice the Mongolian font.

[pic]

2 Outlook Express

In Outlook Express you also can select fonts. So you can use a Keyboard remapper to write in Mongolian. Notify that you must have configured Outlook Express so that you can select a font.

3 Netscape Messanger

Last but not least I don’t want forget the Netscape Messenger. This E-Mail client also supports the choce of fonts.

3 Send a Fax

I use Microsoft at Work Fax from Windows 95 (Windows for Wworkgroups 3.11) to send Faxes. But I think it also works with other fax applications. There are different ways to send a fax.

a) You can use Word, Write or WordPad to write the fax and send it via the Microsoft Fax printerport.

[pic]

b) I store the document and add it as an attachment. Then the document also will transmit to the fax receiver.

c) You can use Outlook 98 to send a fax by typing in a fax address in the field „TO“.

4 Internet Relay Chat

One of the most used services in the internet is the Internet Relay Chat. In the following IRC applications is the use if mongolian letters tested.

1 Microsoft Chat

Microsoft Chat you can download for free at the Microsoft HomePage () or you can get it together with the Internet Explorer 4.01 Sp1. The selection of Mongolian font only works in Text Mode (blue mark).

[pic]

The choice to another font you geet by clicking the red marked button „A“.

[pic]

The best would be select the mongolian font for all message types. The base letters of the mongolian font are the english.

2 Visual IRC 97

Visual IRC 97 is a freeware Chat program with a attractiv surface. I think it is equal to Microsoft program. The red marked button give the possibility to change the fonts.

By pressing the blue colored button „Select from font list“ you can configure the font for the Screen areas. Configure te Mongolian font for all screen areas at first and change them later for your need.

Use the Mongolian Fonts in Browsern

At least two little tips howw to use a Mongolian font with an Internet Browser. Two of the most used are Internet Explorer 4.01 Sp 1 and Netscapes Communicator. Both have a menu to configure an userdefined language.[2]

1 Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1/ SP2

Via the Menuoption „View“/ „Internetoption“/ „Fonts“ you can „create“ a userdefined font. Later you can select this font via „View“/ „Fonts“.

[pic]

2 Netscape Communicator

Via the menu „Edit“/ „Options“ (Preferences) there is also the possibility to create a userdefined font. Select it via „View“ / „Font“.
