Instructions for Installing Cygwin

The Cygwin installation is run from :

The following dialog box pops up; click on “Open”.

The Cygwin install begins; here’s the opening screen; click on “Next”

Choose “Install from Internet” for your download source and click “Next”.

Choose the installation directory (the location into which you want Cygwin to install); in my case, I’ve changed the default to “C:\cygwin”. If the directory does not already exist, the installer will create it on the fly. Also, for our purposes in the Physics 780 lab, we’ve chosen to install for “All Users, and use “Unix” as the Default Text File Type; click “Next” when you’ve set the root directory for the install.

Now choose where Cygwin should place the packages on your local (hard) drive. Note: Windows 2K and XP tend to want to place everything in Documents and Settings – not a good location!! I’ve changed the default to “C:\CygwinPkgDir”, but you can specify any folder off C: that you like (and Cygwin will create it on the fly if necessary). Click “Next” when you’re done:

Next, Cygwin needs to know about your connection to the Internet; most likely, you’ll be fine using the default “Direct Connection” setting; click “Next” to proceed.

The next dialog box to appear lets you choose the FTP site from which the installer will obtain the packages. I’ve had the best luck with the first site on the list (archive.); click “Next” to proceed.

This dialog box will show briefly –

– and it will be replaced by this one:

This list is the complete set of packages you can get as part of the Cygwin install; you don’t have to accept all of it. If you want the entire installation (250MB), click on the word “Default” next to “All”.

TAKE A SHORT PAUSE HERE …wait for the dialog box to toggle to look like this:

IF YOU ONLY WANT TO SELECT CERTAIN PARTS of the install (i.e., some but not all of the available packages), click on each category to toggle “Default” to “Install”, instead of clicking next to the “All” at the top:

Click “Next” to actually begin the installation. You’ll see this progress dialog box while everything’s installing:

The amount of time it takes to install definitely depends on (1) how much bandwidth you have on your Internet connection (i.e., are you connecting to the Internet via RoadRunner, or through a dial-up?), and (2) the configuration of your pc (Windows operating system version, how much memory, CPU).

When everything’s installed, Cygwin will ask you whether you want an icon on the Desktop and/or a shortcut on the Start Menu – your choice on these settings. Click on “Finish”.

Cygwin will continue into the post-installation setup script – this part looks like a regular DOS shell, and you’ll see the last of the setup proceeding.

When all’s said and done, Cygwin will pop up a last dialog box indicating a successful installation; clock “OK” to close and return to your regularly scheduled browser.

Click on either link to start the install

Click here to install all of the Cygwin packages available

Notice “Default” now has toggled to “Install”

Here, I clicked on the “Default” next to all the categories except Doc, Editors and Games; only the packages I’ve chosen manually toggle to “Install”
