Computer use contract

This purpose of this contract (to be signed by both the teen and the parent) is to set the guidelines and rules of the computer(s) and the internet use. Using the computer and the internet is not a “right” but rather a “privilege”. Because using and having a computer connected to the internet is a “privilege”, it can and will be taken away when these guidelines and rules are not followed.

*This contract should be re-written as needed when the change and the teen has shown an understanding to these rules.

Page 1 of this contract is the rules.

Page 2 of this contract has the privileges and consequences of keeping or breaking these rules.

1) The amount of time spent using the computer will be limited. With the exception of doing homework, free time on the computer will be limited to ______ hours per day. Free time included browsing the internet, sending and receiving email, chatting online with friends and playing games.

2) At no time will the computer be used past ___________ o’clock.

3) When using the computer in the teen’s bedroom, the door will remain open at all times.

4) The teen agrees to keep the antivirus program up to date at all times. Up to date means the date of the antivirus files are within the past 10 days.

5) The parent has the right to monitor all activity on the computer if they wish. This means that a monitoring program can be installed and used at any time. At no time shall any installed monitoring program be tampered with, disabled or shut down by the teen.

6) The password to start the computer will known by the parents. That password is not to be changed at any time for any reason unless permission is given by at least one parent and the new password is also given to the parents.

7) Chatting with strangers is not allowed at any time.

8) Any online purchases or transactions will only be made with PRIOR permission from the parents. Credit card information will NEVER be given without permission.

9) All web pages visited are the responsibility of the teen. All web pages visited by “friends” are also the responsibility of the teen. Any inappropriate websites will be the responsibility of the teen and not the “friends”. Visiting inappropriate web pages will immediately be cause for removal of the internet. No exceptions. Inappropriate web pages include any website that includes pornography, cheating, violence, breaking the law and anything else that goes against the rules and morals of our family.

10) Homework and household chores always come before free time on the computer.

11) Internet settings, wireless connection settings and network settings are not to be changed, played with, tampered with, adjusted or removed without permission. No other devices, computers or game machines are to be hooked up to our network without prior permission, this included wireless devices.

12) The wireless internet router is off limits. It is not to be touched physically or remotely. Nothing is to be plugged into it and settings are never to be changed.

If the teen maintains the rules that come with having a computer on the internet, then the following privileges will be kept in place.

Teen will maintain access to all privileges of the house, including watching TV, using the computer, having friends visit, and going out with friends. Access to the internet will be allowed. Free time on eh computer will be allowed and the computer will be allowed to maintain its place in the teens room. These are all privileges that are free to the teen is the rules are not broken.

If the teen does NOT maintains the rules that come with having a computer on the internet, then the following consequences will be placed upon the teen.

Consequence: Teen will not be allowed any privileges including TV, radio, computer, having friends visit or going out with friends. The computers access to the internet will be removed and the computer may be removed from the room. It will be taken OFF the network and may be taken away all together.

Using the computer on the internet means responsibility. The teen is responsible to follow the rules, to accept the consequences of breaking the rules and to set a good example to other siblings. As parents we want you to have this opportunity to prove your responsibility to us. We want you to succeed and are willing to sit down and discuss these rules at any time.
