SURGICAL POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS

SURGICAL POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS

Surgical procedures involving the oral cavity usually heals quickly without complications when proper attention is given to post operative instructions.

Some oozing of blood is normal following oral surgery and may even persist for the next two days. A gauze pad should be placed directly over the surgical would with the teeth closed tight on the pad. The pad should be changed every 20 minutes till the bleeding stops. DO NOT REPLACE GAUZE IF THERE IS NO ACTIVE BLEEDING.

During the first 24 hours after the extraction, follow these simple rules to promote healing and prevent complications:

1. Do not smoke.

2. Do not suck through a straw.

3. Do not rinse your mouth vigorously.

4. Drink lots of fluids and eat only soft nutritious foods.

5. Avoid hot and spicy foods.

6. Avoid coffee, carbonated, and alcoholic beverages.

There is usually some discomfort after surgery. Appropriate analgesics will be prescribed if the doctor feels they are necessary. If none have been prescribed, and no allergies are present, two TYLENOL taken every 2-4 hours should suffice.

You may drink nourishing liquids and eat soft foods, but DO NOT RINSE YOUR MOUTH FOR ONE DAY FOLLOWING SURGERY. After one day, warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) may be used to rinse the mouth following meal times. DO NOT RINSE VIGOROUSLY AS THIS MAY RESULT IN BLEEDING. The mouth should be cleaned and the teeth carefully brushed as usual, in order to maintain a good oral hygiene and encourage healing.

Soft foods and liquids are desirable for one day after surgery.

If there is any prolonged or excessive discomfort, swelling, bleeding or fever, you should contact the doctor so that further direct instructions for your care may be given.
